⁴The day came, and Elkanah sacrificed.

(Now^[a] he used to give meat portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.

1 Samuel 1:4 tn The word “now” does not appear in the Hebrew. It is used here to signal that the narrator makes an aside. This begins an extended parenthetic remark which extends to the end of verse 7. sn The narrator supplies background information about the behavior patterns in this family which would routinely occur when they went to the tabernacle to worship on holy days.
