For it stands in Scripture:

(A)“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
(B)and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who (C)believe, but for those who (D)do not believe,

(E)“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”[a]

and

(F)“A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, (G)as they were destined to do.

Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him.[c] But for those who reject him,

“The stone that the builders rejected
    has now become the cornerstone.”[d]

And,

“He is the stone that makes people stumble,
    the rock that makes them fall.”[e]

They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.
