See, I lay a stone in Zion,(A)
a chosen and honored[a] cornerstone,(B)
and the one who believes in him
will never be put to shame.[b](C)

So honor will come to you who believe; but for the unbelieving,

  1. 2:6 Or precious
  2. 2:6 Is 28:16 LXX
  3. 2:7 Ps 118:22
  4. 2:8 Is 8:14

This is why it says in Scripture:

“Look! I am laying a chosen, precious cornerstone[a] in Zion.
The one who believes in him will never be ashamed.”[b]

Therefore he is precious to you who believe, but to those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,[c]
a stone they stumble over
and a rock they trip on.”[d]

They keep on stumbling because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
