18 (A)Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to those who are good and (B)considerate, but also to those who are [a]crooked. 19 For this finds [b]favor, if for the sake of (C)conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unrighteously. 20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure? But if (D)when you do good and suffer for it, you endure, this finds favor with God.

Christ, Our Example

21 For to this (E)you have been called, (F)since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you (G)an example that you should follow in His steps, 22 who (H)did no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23 who being (I)reviled, was not reviling in return; while suffering, He was uttering no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously. 24 Who Himself [c](J)bore our sins in His body on the (K)tree, so that (L)having died to [d]sin, we might live to righteousness; (M)by His [e]wounds you were (N)healed. 25 For you were (O)continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the (P)Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Submission of Slaves to Masters

18 Household slaves, submit with all fear(A) to your masters,(B) not only to the good and gentle but also to the cruel.[a](C) 19 For it brings favor[b] if, mindful of God’s will,[c][d] someone endures grief from suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is there if you sin and are punished, and you endure it? But when you do what is good and suffer,(D) if you endure it, this brings favor with God.

21 For you were called to this,
because Christ also suffered(E) for you,
leaving you an example,(F)
so that you should follow(G) in His steps.
22 He did not commit sin,(H)
and no deceit(I) was found in His mouth;(J)[e]
23 when He was reviled,
He did not revile in return;
when He was suffering,
He did not threaten
but entrusted Himself to the One who judges(K) justly.
24 He Himself bore our sins(L)
in His body(M) on the tree,(N)
so that, having died to sins,(O)
we might live for righteousness;(P)
you have been healed by His wounds.(Q)[f]
25 For you were like sheep going astray,(R)[g]
but you have now returned
to the Shepherd(S) and Guardian[h] of your souls.
