Be Subject to Authority
13 (A)Be subject for the sake of the Lord to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 14 or to governors as sent [a]by him (B)for the punishment of evildoers and the (C)praise of those who do good. 15 For [b](D)such is the will of God that by doing good you may (E)silence the ignorance of foolish men. 16 Act as (F)free people, and [c]do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as (G)slaves of God. 17 (H)Honor all people, (I)love the [d]brethren, (J)fear God, (K)honor the [e]king.

New Living Translation
Respecting People in Authority
13 For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state, 14 or the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right.
15 It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you. 16 For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. 17 Respect everyone, and love the family of believers.[a] Fear God, and respect the king.
