33 Then he [a]went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had [b](A)devised [c]in his own heart; and he made a feast for the sons of Israel and [d]went up to the altar (B)to burn [e]incense.

The Altar Shall Be Torn Apart

13 Now behold, there came (C)a man of God from Judah to Bethel by the word of Yahweh, while Jeroboam was standing by the altar (D)to burn incense. (E)And he cried against the altar by the word of Yahweh, and said, “O altar, altar, thus says Yahweh, ‘Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, (F)Josiah is his name; and on you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.’” Then he gave a miraculous sign the same day, saying, “(G)This is the miraculous sign which Yahweh has spoken, ‘Behold, the altar shall be torn apart and the [f]ashes which are on it shall be poured out.’” Now it happened that when the king heard the word of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him.” But his hand which he stretched out against him dried up, so that he could not draw it back to himself. The altar also was torn apart and the [g]ashes were poured out from the altar, according to the miraculous sign which the man of God had given by the word of Yahweh. Then the king answered and said to the man of God, “Please [h](H)entreat Yahweh your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” So (I)the man of God [i]entreated Yahweh, and the king’s hand was restored to him, and it became as it was before. Then the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me and refresh yourself, and (J)I will give you a gift.” But the man of God said to the king, “(K)If you were to give me half your house, I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place. For so [j]it was commanded me by the word of Yahweh, saying, ‘You shall eat no bread, nor drink water, nor return by the way which you came.’” 10 So he went another way and did not return by the way which he came to Bethel.

Judgment on Jeroboam

13 A man of God(C) came from Judah to Bethel by a revelation from the Lord while Jeroboam was standing beside the altar to burn incense.(D) The man of God cried out against the altar by a revelation from the Lord: “Altar, altar, this is what the Lord says, ‘A son will be born to the house of David, named Josiah, and he will sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who are burning incense on you. Human bones will be burned on you.’”(E) He gave a sign(F) that day. He said, “This is the sign that the Lord has spoken: ‘The altar will now be ripped apart, and the ashes that are on it will be poured out.’”(G)

When the king heard the word that the man of God had cried out against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Arrest him!” But the hand he stretched out against him withered, and he could not pull it back to himself. The altar was ripped apart, and the ashes poured from the altar, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the Lord.

Then the king responded to the man of God, “Plead for the favor of the Lord your God and pray for me(H) so that my hand may be restored to me.” So the man of God pleaded for the favor of the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored to him and became as it had been at first.

Then the king declared to the man of God, “Come home with me, refresh yourself, and I’ll give you a reward.”(I)

But the man of God replied, “If you were to give me half your house,(J) I still wouldn’t go with you, and I wouldn’t eat bread or drink water in this place, for this is what I was commanded by the word of the Lord:(K) ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or go back the way you came.’” 10 So he went another way; he did not go back by the way he had come to Bethel.
