Solomon’s Prayer for Israel

22 Then (A)Solomon stood before the altar of Yahweh before all the assembly of Israel and (B)spread out his hands toward heaven. 23 And he said, “O Yahweh, the God of Israel, (C)there is no god like You in heaven above or upon earth beneath, (D)keeping covenant and lovingkindness to Your slaves who walk before You with all their heart, 24 who have kept with Your [a]servant, my father David, that which You have [b]promised him; indeed, You have [c]promised with Your mouth and have fulfilled it by Your hand as it is this day. 25 So now, O Yahweh, the God of Israel, keep with Your [d]servant David my father that which You have [e]promised him, saying, ‘(E)You shall not have a man cut off from before Me who is to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your sons keep their way to walk as you have walked before Me.’ 26 So now, O God of Israel, let Your word truly [f]endure (F)which You have spoken to Your [g]servant, my father David.

27 “But will God truly dwell on the earth? Behold, (G)heaven and the [h]highest heaven cannot [i]contain You; how much less this house which I have built! 28 Yet have regard to the (H)prayer of Your slave and to his supplication, O Yahweh my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer which Your slave prays before You today; 29 (I)that Your eyes may be open toward this house night and day, toward (J)the place of which You have said, ‘My name shall be there,’ to listen to the prayer which Your slave shall pray toward this place. 30 (K)And listen to the supplication of Your slave and of Your people Israel, (L)when they pray toward this place; listen in heaven Your dwelling place; listen and (M)forgive.

31 “(N)If a man sins against his neighbor and is made to take an oath, and he comes and takes an oath before Your altar in this house, 32 then listen in heaven and act and judge Your slaves, (O)condemning the wicked by [j]bringing his way on his own head and justifying the righteous by [k]bringing him reward according to his righteousness.

33 “(P)When Your people Israel are [l]defeated before an enemy, because they have sinned against You, (Q)if they turn to You again and confess Your name and pray and make supplication to You in this house, 34 then listen in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your people Israel, and bring them back to the land which You gave to their fathers.

35 “(R)When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain, because they have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and confess Your name and turn from their sin when You afflict them, 36 then listen in heaven and forgive the sin of Your slaves and of Your people Israel; (S)indeed, teach them the good way in which they should walk. And (T)give rain on Your land, which You have given to Your people for an inheritance.

37 “(U)If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is scorching wind or mildew, locust or grasshopper, if their enemy besieges them in the land of their [m]cities, whatever plague, whatever sickness there is, 38 whatever prayer or supplication is made by any man or by all Your people Israel, each of whom knows the [n]affliction of his own heart, and spreads his [o]hands toward this house; 39 then listen in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive and act and give to each according to all his ways, (V)whose heart You know, for (W)You alone know the hearts of all the sons of men, 40 that they may [p]fear You all the days that they live upon the face of the land which You have given to our fathers.

41 “Also concerning the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel, if he comes from a far country for Your name’s sake 42 (for they will hear of Your great name (X)and Your strong hand, and of Your outstretched arm); so if he comes and prays toward this house, 43 listen in heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You, in order (Y)that all the peoples of the earth may know Your name to [q]fear You, as do Your people Israel, and to know that Your name is called upon this house which I have built.

44 “When Your people go out to battle against [r]their enemy, by whatever way You shall send them, and (Z)they pray to Yahweh [s]toward the city which You have chosen and the house which I have built for Your name, 45 then listen in heaven to their prayer and their supplication, and do justice.

46 “When they sin against You (for (AA)there is no man who does not sin) and You are angry with them and give them over to an enemy, so that [t]they take them away captive (AB)to the land of the enemy, far off or near; 47 (AC)and if they cause these things to return to their heart in the land where they have been taken captive, and [u]return and make supplication to You in the land of those who have taken them captive, saying, ‘(AD)We have sinned and have committed iniquity, we have acted wickedly’; 48 (AE)and if they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who have taken them captive, and (AF)pray to You toward their land which You have given to their fathers, the city which You have chosen, and the house which I have built for Your name; 49 then listen in heaven Your dwelling place to their prayer and their supplication, and do justice for them, 50 and forgive Your people who have sinned against You and all their transgressions which they have transgressed against You, and (AG)give them over as objects of compassion before those who have taken them captive, that they may have compassion on them 51 ((AH)for they are Your people and Your inheritance which You have brought forth from Egypt, (AI)from the midst of the iron furnace), 52 (AJ)that Your eyes may be open to the supplication of Your slave and to the supplication of Your people Israel, to listen to them whenever they call to You. 53 For You have separated them from all the peoples of the earth as Your inheritance, (AK)as You spoke by the hand of Moses Your [v]servant, when You brought our fathers forth from Egypt, O Lord Yahweh.”

Solomon Blesses Yahweh

54 (AL)Now it happened that when Solomon had [w]finished praying this entire prayer and supplication to Yahweh, (AM)he arose from before the altar of Yahweh, from kneeling on his knees with his [x]hands spread toward heaven. 55 And he stood and (AN)blessed all the assembly of Israel with a loud voice, saying:

56 “Blessed be Yahweh, who has given rest to His people Israel, (AO)according to all that He [y]promised; (AP)not one promise has [z]failed of all His good [aa]promises, which He [ab]promised by the hand of Moses His [ac]servant. 57 May Yahweh our God be with us, as He was with our fathers; (AQ)may He not forsake us or abandon us, 58 that (AR)He may incline our hearts to Himself, to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, which He commanded our fathers. 59 And may these words of mine, with which I have made supplication before Yahweh, be near to Yahweh our God day and night, that He may do justice for His slave and justice for His people Israel, [ad]as each day requires, 60 so (AS)that all the peoples of the earth may know that (AT)Yahweh is God; there is no one else. 61 (AU)Let your heart therefore be [ae]wholly devoted to Yahweh our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as at this day.”

Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication(A)

22 Then Solomon stood before (B)the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and (C)spread out his hands toward heaven; 23 and he said: “Lord God of Israel, (D)there is no God in heaven above or on earth below like You, (E)who keep Your covenant and mercy with Your servants who (F)walk before You with all their hearts. 24 You have kept what You promised Your servant David my father; You have both spoken with Your mouth and fulfilled it with Your hand, as it is this day. 25 Therefore, Lord God of Israel, now keep what You promised Your servant David my father, saying, (G)‘You shall not fail to have a man sit before Me on the throne of Israel, only if your sons take heed to their way, that they walk before Me as you have walked before Me.’ 26 (H)And now I pray, O God of Israel, let Your word come true, which You have spoken to Your servant David my father.

27 “But (I)will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the (J)heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built! 28 Yet regard the prayer of Your servant and his supplication, O Lord my God, and listen to the cry and the prayer which Your servant is praying before You today: 29 that Your eyes may be open toward this [a]temple night and day, toward the place of which You said, (K)‘My name shall be (L)there,’ that You may hear the prayer which Your servant makes (M)toward this place. 30 (N)And may You hear the supplication of Your servant and of Your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Hear in heaven Your dwelling place; and when You hear, forgive.

31 “When anyone sins against his neighbor, and is forced to take (O)an oath, and comes and takes an oath before Your altar in this temple, 32 then hear in heaven, and act, and judge Your servants, (P)condemning the wicked, bringing his way on his head, and justifying the righteous by giving him according to his righteousness.

33 (Q)“When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against You, and (R)when they turn back to You and confess Your name, and pray and make supplication to You in this temple, 34 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your people Israel, and bring them back to the land which You gave to their (S)fathers.

35 (T)“When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against You, when they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and turn from their sin because You afflict them, 36 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, that You may (U)teach them (V)the good way in which they should walk; and send rain on Your land which You have given to Your people as an inheritance.

37 (W)“When there is famine in the land, pestilence or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers; when their enemy besieges them in the land of their [b]cities; whatever plague or whatever sickness there is; 38 whatever prayer, whatever supplication is made by anyone, or by all Your people Israel, when each one knows the plague of his own heart, and spreads out his hands toward this temple: 39 then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and give to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone (X)know the hearts of all the sons of men), 40 (Y)that they may fear You all the days that they live in the land which You gave to our fathers.

44 “When Your people go out to battle against their enemy, wherever You send them, and when they pray to the Lord toward the city which You have chosen and the temple which I have built for Your name, 45 then hear in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their [c]cause.

46 “When they sin against You (AC)(for there is no one who does not sin), and You become angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, and they take them captive (AD)to the land of the enemy, far or near; 47 (AE)yet when they [d]come to themselves in the land where they were carried captive, and repent, and make supplication to You in the land of those who took them captive, (AF)saying, ‘We have sinned and done wrong, we have committed wickedness’; 48 and when they (AG)return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who led them away captive, and (AH)pray to You toward their land which You gave to their fathers, the city which You have chosen and the temple which I have built for Your name: 49 then hear in heaven Your dwelling place their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their [e]cause, 50 and forgive Your people who have sinned against You, and all their transgressions which they have transgressed against You; and (AI)grant them compassion before those who took them captive, that they may have compassion on them 51 (for (AJ)they are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You brought out of Egypt, (AK)out of the iron furnace), 52 (AL)that Your eyes may be open to the supplication of Your servant and the supplication of Your people Israel, to listen to them whenever they call to You. 53 For You separated them from among all the peoples of the earth to be Your inheritance, (AM)as You spoke by Your servant Moses, when You brought our fathers out of Egypt, O Lord God.”

54 (AO)And so it was, when Solomon had finished praying all this prayer and supplication to the Lord, that he arose from before the altar of the Lord, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven. 55 Then he stood (AP)and blessed all the assembly of Israel with a loud voice, saying: 56 “Blessed be the Lord, who has given (AQ)rest[f] to His people Israel, according to all that He promised. (AR)There has not failed one word of all His good promise, which He promised through His servant Moses. 57 May the Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers. (AS)May He not leave us nor forsake us, 58 that He may (AT)incline our hearts to Himself, to walk in all His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, which He commanded our fathers. 59 And may these words of mine, with which I have made supplication before the Lord, be near the Lord our God day and night, that He may maintain the cause of His servant and the cause of His people Israel, as each day may require, 60 (AU)that all the peoples of the earth may know that (AV)the Lord is God; there is no other. 61 Let your (AW)heart therefore be [g]loyal to the Lord our God, to walk in His statutes and keep His commandments, as at this day.”

“Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like(C) you in heaven above or on earth below—you who keep your covenant of love(D) with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way. 24 You have kept your promise to your servant David my father; with your mouth you have promised and with your hand you have fulfilled it—as it is today.

25 “Now Lord, the God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father the promises(E) you made to him when you said, ‘You shall never fail to have a successor to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants are careful in all they do to walk before me faithfully as you have done.’ 26 And now, God of Israel, let your word that you promised(F) your servant David my father come true.

27 “But will God really dwell(G) on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven,(H) cannot contain(I) you. How much less this temple I have built! 28 Yet give attention to your servant’s prayer and his plea for mercy, Lord my God. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day. 29 May your eyes be open(J) toward(K) this temple night and day, this place of which you said, ‘My Name(L) shall be there,’ so that you will hear the prayer your servant prays toward this place. 30 Hear the supplication of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray(M) toward this place. Hear(N) from heaven, your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive.(O)

31 “When anyone wrongs their neighbor and is required to take an oath and they come and swear the oath(P) before your altar in this temple, 32 then hear from heaven and act. Judge between your servants, condemning the guilty by bringing down on their heads what they have done, and vindicating the innocent by treating them in accordance with their innocence.(Q)

33 “When your people Israel have been defeated(R) by an enemy because they have sinned(S) against you, and when they turn back to you and give praise to your name, praying and making supplication to you in this temple,(T) 34 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel and bring them back to the land you gave to their ancestors.

35 “When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain(U) because your people have sinned(V) against you, and when they pray toward this place and give praise to your name and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them, 36 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Teach(W) them the right way(X) to live, and send rain(Y) on the land you gave your people for an inheritance.

37 “When famine(Z) or plague(AA) comes to the land, or blight(AB) or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers,(AC) or when an enemy besieges them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come, 38 and when a prayer or plea is made by anyone among your people Israel—being aware of the afflictions of their own hearts, and spreading out their hands(AD) toward this temple— 39 then hear(AE) from heaven, your dwelling place. Forgive(AF) and act; deal with everyone according to all they do, since you know(AG) their hearts (for you alone know every human heart), 40 so that they will fear(AH) you all the time they live in the land(AI) you gave our ancestors.

41 “As for the foreigner(AJ) who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name— 42 for they will hear(AK) of your great name and your mighty hand(AL) and your outstretched arm—when they come and pray toward this temple, 43 then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know(AM) your name and fear(AN) you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name.(AO)

44 “When your people go to war against their enemies, wherever you send them, and when they pray(AP) to the Lord toward the city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name, 45 then hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.(AQ)

46 “When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin(AR)—and you become angry with them and give them over to their enemies, who take them captive(AS) to their own lands, far away or near; 47 and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead(AT) with you in the land of their captors and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly’;(AU) 48 and if they turn back(AV) to you with all their heart(AW) and soul in the land of their enemies who took them captive, and pray(AX) to you toward the land you gave their ancestors, toward the city you have chosen and the temple(AY) I have built for your Name;(AZ) 49 then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause. 50 And forgive your people, who have sinned against you; forgive all the offenses they have committed against you, and cause their captors to show them mercy;(BA) 51 for they are your people and your inheritance,(BB) whom you brought out of Egypt, out of that iron-smelting furnace.(BC)

52 “May your eyes be open(BD) to your servant’s plea and to the plea of your people Israel, and may you listen to them whenever they cry out to you.(BE) 53 For you singled them out from all the nations of the world to be your own inheritance,(BF) just as you declared through your servant Moses when you, Sovereign Lord, brought our ancestors out of Egypt.”

54 When Solomon had finished all these prayers and supplications to the Lord, he rose from before the altar of the Lord, where he had been kneeling with his hands spread out toward heaven. 55 He stood and blessed(BG) the whole assembly of Israel in a loud voice, saying:

56 “Praise be to the Lord, who has given rest(BH) to his people Israel just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises(BI) he gave through his servant Moses. 57 May the Lord our God be with us as he was with our ancestors; may he never leave us nor forsake(BJ) us. 58 May he turn our hearts(BK) to him, to walk in obedience to him and keep the commands, decrees and laws he gave our ancestors. 59 And may these words of mine, which I have prayed before the Lord, be near to the Lord our God day and night, that he may uphold the cause of his servant and the cause of his people Israel according to each day’s need, 60 so that all the peoples(BL) of the earth may know that the Lord is God and that there is no other.(BM) 61 And may your hearts(BN) be fully committed(BO) to the Lord our God, to live by his decrees and obey his commands, as at this time.”
