De wijngaard van Nabot
21 Hierna gebeurde het volgende. Er was een man uit Jizreël die Nabot heette. Hij had een wijngaard naast het paleis van koning Achab in Samaria. 2 Op een keer zei Achab tegen Nabot: "Wil je mij je wijngaard geven? Dan maak ik er een groententuin van. Want hij ligt vlak naast mijn paleis. Ik zal je er een betere wijngaard voor in de plaats geven. Of als je dat liever hebt, zal ik je er geld voor geven." 3 Maar Nabot zei tegen Achab: "Nee, dat kan ik niet doen. Want die wijngaard is een deel van de grond die we altijd van vader op zoon hebben geërfd." 4 Achab kwam boos en geïrriteerd thuis, omdat Nabot hem de wijngaard niet wilde geven. Hij ging op zijn bed liggen met zijn gezicht naar de muur, en wilde niets eten.
5 Zijn vrouw Izebel kwam bij hem en vroeg: "Waarom ben je zo boos en wil je niets eten?" 6 Achab antwoordde: "Ik heb Nabot uit Jizreël om zijn wijngaard gevraagd. Ik heb gezegd dat ik hem er een andere wijngaard voor wil geven, of ervoor wil betalen. Maar Nabot wil niet." 7 Toen zei Izebel: "Ben jij nou de koning van Israël? Jij hebt toch zeker de macht? Sta op, eet en wees vrolijk. Ik zal er wel voor zorgen dat je de wijngaard van Nabot krijgt." 8 Ze schreef brieven met Achabs naam eronder, verzegelde die met zijn zegelring en stuurde ze aan de leiders en belangrijke mannen van Nabots stad. 9 In die brieven had ze geschreven: "Houd een godsdienstige bijeenkomst en geef Nabot een ereplaats. 10 Zoek een paar schurken uit en zorg ervoor dat zij hem dan beschuldigen van ontrouw aan God en aan de koning. Sleep Nabot dan de stad uit en gooi hem met stenen dood."
11 De leiders en de belangrijke mannen van Nabots stad deden wat Izebel hun in de brieven had bevolen. 12 Ze organiseerden een godsdienstige bijeenkomst en gaven Nabot een ereplaats. 13 Toen kwamen er twee schurken naar voren die hem begonnen te beschuldigen. Ze gingen tegenover hem staan en zeiden waar iedereen bij was: "Nabot is ontrouw geworden aan God en aan de koning." Toen sleurden ze hem de stad uit en gooiden hem met stenen dood. 14 Daarna stuurden ze aan Izebel de boodschap: "Nabot is dood." 15 Toen Izebel dat hoorde, zei ze tegen Achab: "Sta op en neem de wijngaard die Nabot je niet wilde verkopen. Want Nabot leeft niet meer, hij is dood." 16 Zodra Achab hoorde dat Nabot dood was, ging hij naar de wijngaard van Nabot en nam die voor zichzelf.
Elia wordt door de Heer naar Achab gestuurd
17 Toen zei de Heer tegen Elia uit Tisbe: 18 "Ga naar koning Achab in Samaria. Hij is in de wijngaard van Nabot. Hij heeft die voor zichzelf genomen. 19 Zeg tegen hem: 'Eerst iemand vermoorden en dan zijn land in bezit nemen? Dit zegt Heer: Op de plaats waar de honden het bloed van Nabot hebben opgelikt, zullen ze ook uw bloed oplikken.' "
20 Toen Achab Elia zag, zei hij: "Zo, vijand, kom je me weer eens opzoeken?" Elia antwoordde: "Ik kom u opzoeken, omdat u echt helemaal niet wil leven zoals de Heer het wil. 21 Nu zegt de Heer: 'Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat het slecht met u zal aflopen. En Ik zal alle mannen van uw familie vernietigen, van hoog tot laag. 22 Met uw familie zal hetzelfde gebeuren als met de familie van koning Jerobeam en de familie van koning Baësa. Want u heeft Mij woedend gemaakt en u heeft ervoor gezorgd dat Israël ongehoorzaam aan Mij werd.' 23 Over Izebel heeft de Heer gezegd: 'De honden zullen haar opeten bij de muur van Jizreël.'[a] 24 De mannen van uw familie die in de stad worden gedood, zullen door de honden worden opgegeten. En de mannen die op het veld worden gedood, zullen door de vogels worden opgegeten."
25 Er is nooit meer iemand geweest die zo slecht leefde als Achab: hij deed echt alles wat de Heer slecht vindt. Zijn vrouw Izebel had hem daartoe opgestookt. 26 Het was heel vreselijk hoe hij de afgoden diende. Hij diende hen op dezelfde manier als de Amorieten hadden gedaan die door de Heer voor de Israëlieten uit het land waren weggejaagd.
27 Zodra Achab hoorde wat Elia zei, scheurde hij zijn kleren als teken van verdriet, deed rouwkleren aan en at niet. Hij sliep zelfs in zijn rouwkleren en liep met langzame stappen. 28 Toen zei de Heer tegen Elia: 29 "Heb je gezien dat Achab Mij heeft laten zien dat hij echt spijt heeft? Daarom zal Ik zijn familie niet doden zolang hij zelf nog leeft. Maar als zijn zoon koning is geworden, zal gebeuren wat Ik heb gezegd."

Naboth Is Murdered for His Vineyard
21 And it came to pass after these things that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in (A)Jezreel, next to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. 2 So Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, “Give me your (B)vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near, next to my house; and for it I will give you a vineyard better than it. Or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its worth in money.”
3 But Naboth said to Ahab, “The Lord forbid (C)that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you!”
4 So Ahab went into his house sullen and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he had said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no food. 5 But (D)Jezebel his wife came to him, and said to him, “Why is your spirit so sullen that you eat no food?”
6 He said to her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite, and said to him, ‘Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if it pleases you, I will give you another vineyard for it.’ And he answered, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’ ”
7 Then Jezebel his wife said to him, “You now exercise authority over Israel! Arise, eat food, and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”
8 And she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters to the elders and the nobles who were dwelling in the city with Naboth. 9 She wrote in the letters, saying,
Proclaim a fast, and seat Naboth [a]with high honor among the people; 10 and seat two men, scoundrels, before him to bear witness against him, saying, “You have (E)blasphemed God and the king.” Then take him out, and (F)stone him, that he may die.
11 So the men of his city, the elders and nobles who were inhabitants of his city, did as Jezebel had sent to them, as it was written in the letters which she had sent to them. 12 (G)They proclaimed a fast, and seated Naboth with high honor among the people. 13 And two men, scoundrels, came in and sat before him; and the scoundrels (H)witnessed against him, against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth has blasphemed God and the king!” (I)Then they took him outside the city and stoned him with stones, so that he died. 14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned and is dead.”
15 And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, “Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead.” 16 So it was, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab got up and went down to take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.
The Lord Condemns Ahab
17 (J)Then the word of the Lord came to (K)Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 18 “Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, (L)who lives in Samaria. There he is, in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone down to take possession of it. 19 You shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Have you murdered and also taken possession?” ’ And you shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: (M)“In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick your blood, even yours.” ’ ”
20 So Ahab said to Elijah, (N)“Have you found me, O my enemy?”
And he answered, “I have found you, because (O)you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the Lord: 21 ‘Behold, (P)I will bring calamity on you. I will take away your (Q)posterity, and will cut off from Ahab (R)every male in Israel, both (S)bond and free. 22 I will make your house like the house of (T)Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of (U)Baasha the son of Ahijah, because of the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger, and made Israel sin.’ 23 And (V)concerning Jezebel the Lord also spoke, saying, ‘The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the [b]wall of Jezreel.’ 24 The dogs shall eat (W)whoever belongs to Ahab and dies in the city, and the birds of the air shall eat whoever dies in the field.”
25 But (X)there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the Lord, (Y)because Jezebel his wife [c]stirred him up. 26 And he behaved very abominably in following idols, according to all (Z)that the Amorites had done, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.
27 So it was, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes and (AA)put sackcloth on his body, and fasted and lay in sackcloth, and went about mourning.
28 And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29 “See how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he (AB)has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the calamity in his days. (AC)In the days of his son I will bring the calamity on his house.”

23 And of Jezebel also spake the Lord, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.

The Lord Condemns Ahab

20 Ahab said to Elijah, (N)“Have you found me, O my enemy?” He answered, “I have found you, because (O)you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord. 21 Behold, I will bring disaster upon you. I will utterly burn you up, and (P)will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel. 22 And I will make your house like (Q)the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like (R)the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the anger to which you have provoked me, and because you (S)have made Israel to sin. 23 And of Jezebel the Lord also said, (T)‘The dogs shall eat Jezebel within (U)the walls of Jezreel.’ 24 (V)Anyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone of his who dies in the open country the birds of the heavens shall eat.”
Ahab's Repentance
25 ((W)There was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the Lord like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited. 26 He acted very abominably in going after (X)idols, as (Y)the Amorites had done, whom the Lord cast out before the people of Israel.)
27 And when Ahab heard those words, he (Z)tore his clothes and (AA)put sackcloth on his flesh and (AB)fasted and lay in sackcloth and went about dejectedly. 28 And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29 “Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the disaster in his days; (AC)but in his son's days I will bring the disaster upon his house.”
