Jerobeam
26 Ook Jerobeam, een dienaar van Salomo, kwam in opstand tegen de koning. Hij was de zoon van Nebat, uit Zereda. Hij was uit de stam van Efraïm. Zijn moeder was weduwe en heette Zerua. 27 Hij kwam in opstand tegen koning Salomo. Dat kwam zo.
Salomo liet de Millo-burcht bouwen en de scheur in de 'Stad van David' repareren. 28 Jerobeam deed zijn werk goed. Toen Salomo zag dat hij zijn werk goed deed, maakte hij hem opzichter over de arbeiders uit de stam van Jozef.[a]
29 Toen Jerobeam op een keer de stad Jeruzalem uitging, ontmoette hij buiten op de weg de profeet Ahia uit Silo. Ahia had een nieuwe mantel aan. Ze waren alleen, er was verder niemand. 30 Ahia trok zijn nieuwe mantel uit en scheurde die in twaalf stukken. 31 Hij zei tegen Jerobeam: "Pak tien stukken. Want dit zegt de Heer, de God van Israël: Ik ga het koninkrijk van Salomo afscheuren en Ik geef tien stammen aan jou. 32 Maar één stam zal van Salomo blijven, vanwege mijn belofte aan mijn dienaar David[b] en vanwege Jeruzalem, de stad die Ik uit alle stammen van Israël heb uitgekozen. 33 Ik doe dit omdat Salomo Mij heeft verlaten. Hij is andere goden gaan aanbidden: Astarot, de godin van de Sidoniërs, Kamos, de god van de Moabieten, en Milkom, de god van de Ammonieten. Hij heeft niet geleefd zoals Ik het wil. Want hij heeft zich niet gehouden aan mijn wetten en leefregels zoals zijn vader David heeft gedaan. Daardoor heeft heel Israël Mij verlaten. Ze zijn andere goden gaan dienen.
34 Maar Ik zal hem het koninkrijk niet afnemen. Hij zal nog zijn leven lang koning mogen blijven. Want dat heb Ik beloofd aan mijn dienaar David. Hem had Ik uitgekozen en hij heeft zich aan mijn wetten en leefregels gehouden. 35 Maar Ik zal het koninkrijk van Salomo's zoon afnemen. Daarvan zal Ik tien stammen aan jou geven. 36 Aan zijn zoon zal Ik één stam geven. Want Ik wil dat er altijd een zoon van David koning zal zijn in Jeruzalem, de stad die Ik heb uitgekozen en waar Ik wil wonen. 37 Maar jou zal Ik koning maken over alles wat je wil hebben. Je zal koning worden van Israël. 38 Maar je moet Mij altijd gehoorzamen. Je moet leven zoals Ik het wil. Je moet je houden aan mijn wetten en leefregels, zoals mijn dienaar David heeft gedaan. Dan zal Ik met je zijn. Dan zal altijd één van jouw zonen koning zijn, net zoals bij David. Ik zal Israël aan jou geven. 39 Zo zal Ik de familie van David vernederen. Maar niet voor altijd."
40 Salomo probeerde Jerobeam te doden. Maar Jerobeam vluchtte naar Egypte. Hij ging naar koning Sisak van Egypte. Daar bleef hij wonen totdat Salomo gestorven was.

26 And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon's servant, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king.
27 And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father.
28 And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph.
29 And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field:
30 And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces:
31 And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee:
32 (But he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:)
33 Because that they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father.
34 Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant's sake, whom I chose, because he kept my commandments and my statutes:
35 But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it unto thee, even ten tribes.
36 And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.
37 And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel.
38 And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that is right in my sight, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee.
39 And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever.
40 Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, unto Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

Jeroboam’s Rebellion
26 Then Solomon’s servant, (A)Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite from Zereda, whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow, (B)also (C)rebelled against the king.
27 And this is what caused him to rebel against the king: (D)Solomon had built the Millo and [a]repaired the damages to the City of David his father. 28 The man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor; and Solomon, seeing that the young man was (E)industrious, made him the officer over all the labor force of the house of Joseph.
29 Now it happened at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet (F)Ahijah the Shilonite met him on the way; and he had clothed himself with a new garment, and the two were alone in the field. 30 Then Ahijah took hold of the new garment that was on him, and (G)tore it into twelve pieces. 31 And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for (H)thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten tribes to you 32 (but he shall have one tribe for the sake of My servant David, and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel), 33 (I)because [b]they have forsaken Me, and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the people of Ammon, and have not walked in My ways to do what is right in My eyes and keep My statutes and My judgments, as did his father David. 34 However I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand, because I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of My servant David, whom I chose because he kept My commandments and My statutes. 35 But (J)I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand and give it to you—ten tribes. 36 And to his son I will give one tribe, that (K)My servant David may always have a lamp before Me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen for Myself, to put My name there. 37 So I will take you, and you shall reign over all your heart desires, and you shall be king over Israel. 38 Then it shall be, if you heed all that I command you, walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as My servant David did, then (L)I will be with you and (M)build for you an enduring house, as I built for David, and will give Israel to you. 39 And I will afflict the descendants of David because of this, but not forever.’ ”
40 Solomon therefore sought to kill Jeroboam. But Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt, to (N)Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
