²⁰ If people say, “I love God,” but hate their brothers or sisters [^Cfellow believers], they are liars. [^LFor] Those who do not love their brothers and sisters [^Cfellow believers], whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have never seen. ²¹ And ·God gave us this command [^Lwe have this command from him]: Those who love God must also love their brothers and sisters [^Cfellow believers; John 13:34].

Faith in the Son of God

5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the ·Christ [Messiah] is ·God’s child [^Lborn of/begotten by God], and whoever loves the Father also loves the ·Father’s children [^Lone born of/begotten by him].
