15 But I have (A)used none of these things. And I am not writing these things so that it will be done so in my case, for it would be better for me to die than have anyone make (B)my boast an empty one. 16 For if I proclaim the gospel, I have nothing to boast, for (C)I am under compulsion. For woe is me if I do not proclaim (D)the gospel. 17 For if I do this voluntarily, I have a (E)reward; but if against my will, I have a (F)stewardship entrusted to me. 18 What then is my (G)reward? That, when I proclaim the gospel, I may offer the gospel (H)without charge, so as (I)not to make full use of my authority in the gospel.

I am not writing this to have it done this way in my case, because it is better for me to die than to let anyone deprive me of my boast. 16 You see, if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast about, because an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 If I do this as a volunteer, I receive compensation. But if not, I have been entrusted with a responsibility as a steward. 18 What then is my compensation? To present the gospel of Christ[a] free of charge when I preach it, instead of making use of the right I have when I preach the gospel.
