1 Corinthians 1:26-31

New International Version

²⁶Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called.^(A) Not many of you were wise^(B) by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. ²⁷But God chose^(C) the foolish^(D) things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. ²⁸God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not^(E)—to nullify the things that are, ²⁹so that no one may boast before him.^(F) ³⁰It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus,^(G) who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness,^(H) holiness^(I) and redemption.^(J) ³¹Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”^[a]^(K)

Not many of you were wise by human standards,^[a] not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. ²⁷But God chose what is nonsense in the world to make the wise feel ashamed. God chose what is weak in the world to make the strong feel ashamed. ²⁸And God chose what is insignificant in the world, what is despised, what is nothing, in order to destroy what is something, ²⁹so that no one^[b] may boast in God’s presence. ³⁰It is because of God^[c] that you are in union with the Messiah^[d] Jesus, who for us has become wisdom from God, as well as our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. ³¹Therefore, as it is written, “The person who boasts must boast in the Lord.”^[e]
