Now these things became examples for us, so that we will not desire(A) evil things as they did.[a](B) Don’t become idolaters(C) as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to play.[b](D)[c] Let us not commit sexual immorality(E) as some of them did,[d] and in a single day 23,000 people fell dead.(F) Let us not test Christ as some of them did[e] and were destroyed by snakes.(G) 10 Nor should we complain(H) as some of them did,[f](I) and were killed by the destroyer.[g](J)

Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we should not be desirers of evil things, just as those also desired them, and not become idolaters, as some of them did, just as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to play,”[a] nor commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed sexual immorality, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day, nor put Christ to the test, as some of them tested him, and were destroyed by snakes, 10 nor grumble, just as some of them grumbled, and were destroyed by the destroyer.
