Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as (A)they did. (B)Do not be idolaters (C)as some of them were; as it is written, (D)“The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” (E)We must not indulge in sexual immorality (F)as some of them did, and (G)twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ[a] to the test, (H)as some of them did and (I)were destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, (J)as some of them did and (K)were destroyed by (L)the Destroyer.

These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did, or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.”[a] And we must not engage in sexual immorality as some of them did, causing 23,000 of them to die in one day.

Nor should we put Christ[b] to the test, as some of them did and then died from snakebites. 10 And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death.
