1 Corinthians 4:9-13

⁹For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, ^(A)like men sentenced to death, because we ^(B)have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men. ¹⁰^(C)We are fools for Christ's sake, but ^(D)you are wise in Christ. ^(E)We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. ¹¹To the present hour ^(F)we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and ^(G)buffeted and ^(H)homeless, ¹²and we ^(I)labor, working with our own hands. ^(J)When reviled, we bless; ^(K)when persecuted, we endure; ¹³when slandered, we entreat. ^(L)We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, ^(M)the refuse of all things.

⁹For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display in last place, like men condemned to death. We have become a spectacle for the world, for angels, and for people to stare at. ¹⁰We are fools for the Messiah’s^[a] sake, but you are wise in the Messiah.^[b] We are weak, but you are strong. You are honored, but we are dishonored. ¹¹We are hungry, thirsty, dressed in rags, brutally treated, and homeless, right up to the present. ¹²We wear ourselves out from working with our own hands. When insulted, we bless. When persecuted, we endure. ¹³When slandered, we answer with kind words. Even now we have become the filth of the world, the scum of the universe.

We have been made a spectacle^(B) to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. ¹⁰We are fools for Christ,^(C) but you are so wise in Christ!^(D) We are weak, but you are strong!^(E) You are honored, we are dishonored! ¹¹To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless.^(F) ¹²We work hard with our own hands.^(G) When we are cursed, we bless;^(H) when we are persecuted,^(I) we endure it; ¹³when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage^(J) of the world—right up to this moment.
