20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ.

20 Where is the wise person?(A) Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age?(B) Has not God made foolish(C) the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world(D) through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save(E) those who believe.(F) 22 Jews demand signs(G) and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified:(H) a stumbling block(I) to Jews and foolishness(J) to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called,(K) both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God(L) and the wisdom of God.(M) 25 For the foolishness(N) of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness(O) of God is stronger than human strength.

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called.(P) Not many of you were wise(Q) by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose(R) the foolish(S) things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not(T)—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him.(U) 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus,(V) who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness,(W) holiness(X) and redemption.(Y) 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[a](Z)

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom(AA) as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.[b] For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.(AB) I came to you(AC) in weakness(AD) with great fear and trembling.(AE) My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,(AF) but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,(AG) so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.(AH)

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,(AI) but not the wisdom of this age(AJ) or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.(AK) No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery(AL) that has been hidden(AM) and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age(AN) understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(AO) However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[c]
the things God has prepared for those who love him—(AP)

10 these are the things God has revealed(AQ) to us by his Spirit.(AR)

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts(AS) except their own spirit(AT) within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit(AU) of the world,(AV) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom(AW) but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[d] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God(AX) but considers them foolishness,(AY) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit(AZ) makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
    so as to instruct him?”[e](BA)

But we have the mind of Christ.(BB)

20 (A)Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the [a]disputer of this age? (B)Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the (C)wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For (D)Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, (E)to the Jews a [b]stumbling block and to the [c]Greeks (F)foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ (G)the power of God and (H)the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Glory Only in the Lord

26 For [d]you see your calling, brethren, (I)that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many [e]noble, are called. 27 But (J)God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the [f]base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and (K)righteousness and sanctification and redemption— 31 that, as it is written, (L)“He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”

Christ Crucified

And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the [g]testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you (M)except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. (N)I was with you (O)in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching (P)were not with persuasive words of [h]human wisdom, (Q)but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the (R)power of God.

Spiritual Wisdom

However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God [i]ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for (S)had they known, they would not have (T)crucified the Lord of glory.

But as it is written:

(U)“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 But (V)God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the (W)spirit of the man which is in him? (X)Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but (Y)the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the [j]Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 (Z)But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16 For (AA)“who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” (AB)But we have the mind of Christ.
