Jerusalem Captured
4 And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, that is Jebus, where the Jeb′usites were, the inhabitants of the land. 5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here.” Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David. 6 David said, “Whoever shall smite the Jeb′usites first shall be chief and commander.” And Jo′ab the son of Zeru′iah went up first, so he became chief. 7 And David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. 8 And he built the city round about from the Millo in complete circuit; and Jo′ab repaired the rest of the city. 9 And David became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts was with him.

Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion; the same is the city of David. 6 And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and was made chief. 7 And David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore they called it the city of David. 8 And he built the city round about, from Millo even round about; and Joab [a]repaired the rest of the city. 9 And David waxed greater and greater; for Jehovah of hosts was with him.

David Conquers Jerusalem(A)
4 David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites(B) who lived there 5 said to David, “You will not get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.
6 David had said, “Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander in chief.” Joab(C) son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.
7 David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David. 8 He built up the city around it, from the terraces[a](D) to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city. 9 And David became more and more powerful,(E) because the Lord Almighty was with him.
