1 Chronicles 11:4-9
Modern English Version
David Conquers Jerusalem
4 Now David and all Israel with him went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus, since the Jebusites still dwelt there in the land). 5 And the Jebusites said to David, “You will not come here,” but he captured the stronghold of Zion (it is the City of David).
6 Now David had said, “Whoever strikes Jebus first will be the commander and leader of the army,” so Joab, the son of Zeruiah, went up first and became the commander.
7 Then David dwelt in the stronghold, which is why they called it the City of David, 8 and he fortified the city all around from the Millo encircling the stronghold, while Joab preserved the rest of the city. 9 So David kept on going, becoming greater and greater, and the Lord of Hosts was with him.

1 Chronicles 11:4-9
American Standard Version
4 And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (the same is Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there. 5 And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come in hither. Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion; the same is the city of David. 6 And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and was made chief. 7 And David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore they called it the city of David. 8 And he built the city round about, from Millo even round about; and Joab [a]repaired the rest of the city. 9 And David waxed greater and greater; for Jehovah of hosts was with him.

1 Chronicles 11:4-9
New International Version
David Conquers Jerusalem(A)
4 David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites(B) who lived there 5 said to David, “You will not get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.
6 David had said, “Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander in chief.” Joab(C) son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.
7 David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David. 8 He built up the city around it, from the terraces[a](D) to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city. 9 And David became more and more powerful,(E) because the Lord Almighty was with him.
