合唱隊の編成

25 ダビデと神殿の責任者たちは、琴と竪琴とシンバルの伴奏で預言する者を、アサフ、ヘマン、エドトンの各グループから選びました。その名と役割は次のとおり。

2 王の側近の預言者アサフの指揮下に置かれたのは、彼の子ザクル、ヨセフ、ネタヌヤ、アサルエラ。

3 琴の伴奏で主を賛美する責任者エドトンの指揮下に置かれたのは、彼の六人の子ゲダルヤ、ツェリ、エシャヤ、シムイ、ハシャブヤ、マティテヤ。

4-5 王の側近の祭司ヘマンの指揮下に置かれたのは、彼の子ブキヤ、マタヌヤ、ウジエル、シェブエル、エリモテ、ハナヌヤ、ハナニ、エリヤタ、ギダルティ、ロマムティ・エゼル、ヨシュベカシャ、マロティ、ホティル、マハジオテ。神はヘマンに、この十四人の息子のほかに三人の娘を与えました。 6-7 彼らの務めは、シンバルや竪琴や琴の伴奏で歌って主に仕えることでした。彼らの神殿での奉仕は、王と彼らの父の指導のもとでなされました。彼らとその家族はみな、主にささげる賛美の訓練を受け、全部で二百八十八人になる彼らの一人一人が音楽の達人でした。 8 これらの合唱隊員は、年齢や評判に関係なく、くじで決めてそれぞれ務めにつきました。

9-31 第一はアサフ氏族のヨセフ。第二はゲダルヤとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第三はザクルとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第四はイツェリとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第五はネタヌヤとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第六はブキヤとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第七はエサルエラとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第八はエシャヤとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第九はマタヌヤとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第十はシムイとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第十一はアザルエルとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第十二はハシャブヤとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第十三はシュバエルとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第十四はマティテヤとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第十五はエレモテとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第十六はハナヌヤとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第十七はヨシュベカシャとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第十八はハナニとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第十九はマロティとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第二十はエリヤタとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第二十一はホティルとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第二十二はギダルティとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第二十三はマハジオテとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。第二十四はロマムティ・エゼルとその子ら、兄弟合わせて十二人。

神殿の警備に関する組み分け

26 神殿警備に当たる門衛は、コラ氏族のアサフ組から選ばれました。コレの子メシェレムヤが隊長になり、 2-3 その子たちが彼に仕えました。長男ゼカリヤ、次男エディアエル、三男ゼバデヤ、四男ヤテニエル、五男エラム、六男ヨハナン、七男エルエホエナイ。

4-5 オベデ・エドムの次の子たちも、門衛に任じられました。長男シェマヤ、次男エホザバデ、三男ヨアフ、四男サカル、五男ネタヌエル、六男アミエル、七男イッサカル、八男ペウルタイ。神はオベデ・エドムに、このようにすぐれた息子たちを与え、大いに祝福しました。

6-7 シェマヤの子オテニ、レファエル、オベデ、エルザバデはみな傑出した人々で、一族の中で有力な地位を占めました。彼らの兄弟エリフとセマクヤも有能な人物でした。

8 オベデ・エドムの子ならびに孫は総勢六十二人に上り、みな傑出した人々で、それぞれの務めにまさに適任の人たちでした。 9 メシェレムヤの子、兄弟合わせて十八人もすぐれた指導者でした。 10 メラリのグループの一人ホサは、長男ではないシムリを長にしました。 11 ホサのほかの子たちは次のとおり。第二がヒルキヤ、第三がテバルヤ、第四がゼカリヤ。ホサの子と兄弟は、合わせて十三人。

12 神殿警備に当たる各組はそれぞれの指導者の名で呼ばれましたが、ほかのレビ人と同じように神殿での務めにもつきました。 13 それぞれの門の割り当ては、氏族の評判には関係なく、くじで決められました。 14-15 東の門を守るのはシェレムヤのグループ、北の門は、彼の子で知恵者と言われたゼカリヤ、南の門はオベデ・エドムのグループにくじが当たりました。オベデ・エドムの一族には、倉を守る任も与えられました。 16 西の門と上り坂の道にあるシャレケテ門を守る務めは、シュピムとホサに当たりました。 17 毎日、東の門に六人、北の門と南の門に四人ずつ、倉に二人の割で、警備隊員が配置されました。 18 西の門には六人、つまり上り坂の道に四人、その近くの場所に二人が警備につきました。 19 これに当たる者は、コラとメラリの二氏族から選ばれました。

宝物倉の管理

20-22 アヒヤを指導者とするレビ人は、神殿の宝物倉に納められたささげ物の保管に当たりました。ゲルション氏族から出たラダンの一族に、エヒエルの二人の子ゼタムとヨエルがいました。 23-24 ゲルショムの子で、モーセの孫に当たるシェブエルは宝物倉を管理する責任者でした。彼はまた、アムラム、イツハル、ヘブロン、ウジエルの名で呼ばれる各組の指導者でもありました。

25 エリエゼルの子孫を順にたどると、レハブヤ、エシャヤ、ヨラム、ジクリ、シェロミテとなります。 26 シェロミテとその兄弟たちは、ダビデや将軍など、民の指導者のささげ物を扱う役につきました。 27 彼らは、神殿の維持のために戦利品を奉納していたのです。 28 シェロミテとその兄弟たちには、預言者サムエル、キシュの子サウル、ネルの子アブネル、ツェルヤの子ヨアブ、そのほか要人からのささげ物を保管する責任がありました。

その他の任務

29 イツハルの一族のケナヌヤとその子たちは、行政と裁判を担当しました。 30 ヘブロンの一族から出たハシャブヤとその同族千七百人はみな秀でた人々で、ヨルダン川西方のイスラエル領の宗教行事と行政の責任を受け持ちました。 31-32 エリヤを長とするヘブロン氏族の中で秀でた二千七百人は、ルベンとガドの二部族、そしてマナセの半部族の宗教行事および行政の指導に当たりました。彼らが家柄と能力を買われて責任ある務めに任じられたのは、ギルアデのヤゼルで、ダビデ王の治世第四十年のことでした。

軍隊の組織

27 イスラエル軍は、二万四千人からなる十二分団に分けられ、毎年、一か月交替で軍務につきました。各分団には、将校と軍政官が配属されていました。

2-3 第一分団長、ザブディエルの子でペレツの子孫に当たるヤショブアム。第一の月に軍務につく二万四千の将兵を指揮。 4 第二分団長、アホアハの子孫のドダイ。第二の月に軍務につく者を指揮。副官はミクロテ。 5-6 第三分団長、ベナヤ。第三の月に軍務につく者を指揮。彼は大祭司エホヤダの子で、ダビデの軍隊で最強と言われた三十人勇士の筆頭。息子アミザバデが次の分団長となる。 7 第四分団長、ヨアブの兄弟のアサエル。第四の月に軍務につく者を指揮。のちに息子ゼバデヤが後を継ぐ。 8 第五分団長、イズラフ出身のシャムフテ。第五の月に軍務につく者を指揮。 9 第六分団長、テコア出身のイケシュの子イラ。第六の月に軍務につく者を指揮。 10 第七分団長、エフライムのペロニ出身のヘレツ。第七の月に軍務につく者を指揮。 11 第八分団長、ゼラフ出身のフシャ族のシベカイ。第八の月に軍務につく者を指揮。 12 第九分団長、ベニヤミンのアナトテ出身のアビエゼル。第九の月に軍務につく者を指揮。 13 第十分団長、ゼラフのネトファ出身のマフライ。第十の月に軍務につく者を指揮。 14 第十一分団長、エフライムのピルアトン出身のベナヤ。第十一の月に軍務につく者を指揮。 15 第十二分団長、オテニエルに属するネトファ出身のヘルダイ。第十二の月に軍務につく者を指揮。

各部族の長

16-22 イスラエルの各部族の長は次のとおり。ルベン族の長、ジクリの子エリエゼル。シメオン族の長、マアカの子シェファテヤ。レビ族の長、ケムエルの子ハシャブヤ。アロンの子孫の長、ツァドク。ユダ族の長、ダビデの兄弟エリフ。イッサカル族の長、ミカエルの子オムリ。ゼブルン族の長、オバデヤの子イシェマヤ。ナフタリ族の長、アズリエルの子エリモテ。エフライム族の長、アザズヤの子ホセア。マナセの半部族の長、ペダヤの子ヨエル。ギルアデ地域のマナセの半部族の長、ゼカリヤの子イド。ベニヤミン族の長、アブネルの子ヤアシエル。ダン族の長、エロハムの子アザルエル。

23 ダビデは人口調査の時、二十歳以下は数に入れませんでした。民の人口を爆発的に増やすという主の約束があったからです。 24 ヨアブにさせた人口調査は、途中で主の怒りが下ったために完了しませんでした。そのため、調査の最終結果はダビデ王の年代記に載っていません。

王室の責任者たち

25 アディエルの子アズマベテは、宮殿の宝物倉を管理する最高責任者でした。ウジヤの子ヨナタンは、イスラエルの町や村、要塞などにある宝物倉の責任者でした。 26 ケルブの子エズリは、王室所有地で働く人々の監督でした。 27 ラマ出身のシムイは、王室ぶどう園の監督でした。シェファム出身のザブディは、ぶどう酒の製造と貯蔵の責任をもちました。 28 ゲデル出身のバアル・ハナンは、ペリシテ人の領土と隣接する低地にある、王室のオリーブ畑と桑の木を管理する責任を受け持ちました。ヨアシュは、オリーブ油の製造と貯蔵を受け持ちました。 29 シャロン出身のシルタイは、シャロン平原で牛の群れの飼育に当たりました。アデライの子のシャファテは、谷にいる牛の群れの飼育に当たりました。 30 らくだはイシュマエルの地出身のオビルが、雌ろばはメロノテ出身のエフデヤが世話をしました。 31 羊の群れを世話したのは、ハガル人ヤジズでした。これらの人々はみな、ダビデ王の監督下にありました。

32 王子の教育係は、ダビデ王のおじに当たる見識ある相談役ヨナタンで、王子の後見人はハクモニの子エヒエルでした。 33 アヒトフェルは王の相談役、アルキ人フシャイは王の個人的な相談相手でした。 34 ベナヤの子エホヤダとエブヤタルが、アヒトフェルを補佐しました。ヨアブはイスラエル軍の将軍（最高司令官）でした。

The Musicians

25 David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph,(A) Heman(B) and Jeduthun(C) for the ministry of prophesying,(D) accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals.(E) Here is the list of the men(F) who performed this service:(G)

2 From the sons of Asaph:

Zakkur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asarelah. The sons of Asaph were under the supervision of Asaph, who prophesied under the king’s supervision.

3 As for Jeduthun, from his sons:(H)

Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei,[a] Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six in all, under the supervision of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied, using the harp(I) in thanking and praising the Lord.

4 As for Heman, from his sons:

Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael and Jerimoth; Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti and Romamti-Ezer; Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir and Mahazioth. 5 (All these were sons of Heman the king’s seer. They were given him through the promises of God to exalt him. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.)

6 All these men were under the supervision of their father(J) for the music of the temple of the Lord, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the house of God.

Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman(K) were under the supervision of the king.(L) 7 Along with their relatives—all of them trained and skilled in music for the Lord—they numbered 288. 8 Young and old alike, teacher as well as student, cast lots(M) for their duties.

The Gatekeepers

26 The divisions of the gatekeepers:(P)

From the Korahites: Meshelemiah son of Kore, one of the sons of Asaph.

2 Meshelemiah had sons:

Zechariah(Q) the firstborn,

Jediael the second,

Zebadiah the third,

Jathniel the fourth,

3 Elam the fifth,

Jehohanan the sixth

and Eliehoenai the seventh.

4 Obed-Edom also had sons:

Shemaiah the firstborn,

Jehozabad the second,

Joah the third,

Sakar the fourth,

Nethanel the fifth,

5 Ammiel the sixth,

Issachar the seventh

and Peullethai the eighth.

(For God had blessed Obed-Edom.(R))

6 Obed-Edom’s son Shemaiah also had sons, who were leaders in their father’s family because they were very capable men. 7 The sons of Shemaiah: Othni, Rephael, Obed and Elzabad; his relatives Elihu and Semakiah were also able men. 8 All these were descendants of Obed-Edom; they and their sons and their relatives were capable men with the strength to do the work—descendants of Obed-Edom, 62 in all.

9 Meshelemiah had sons and relatives, who were able men—18 in all.

10 Hosah the Merarite had sons: Shimri the first (although he was not the firstborn, his father had appointed him the first),(S) 11 Hilkiah the second, Tabaliah the third and Zechariah the fourth. The sons and relatives of Hosah were 13 in all.

12 These divisions of the gatekeepers, through their leaders, had duties for ministering(T) in the temple of the Lord, just as their relatives had. 13 Lots(U) were cast for each gate, according to their families, young and old alike.

14 The lot for the East Gate(V) fell to Shelemiah.[g] Then lots were cast for his son Zechariah,(W) a wise counselor, and the lot for the North Gate fell to him. 15 The lot for the South Gate fell to Obed-Edom,(X) and the lot for the storehouse fell to his sons. 16 The lots for the West Gate and the Shalleketh Gate on the upper road fell to Shuppim and Hosah.

Guard was alongside of guard: 17 There were six Levites a day on the east, four a day on the north, four a day on the south and two at a time at the storehouse. 18 As for the court[h] to the west, there were four at the road and two at the court[i] itself.

19 These were the divisions of the gatekeepers who were descendants of Korah and Merari.(Y)

The Treasurers and Other Officials

20 Their fellow Levites(Z) were[j] in charge of the treasuries of the house of God and the treasuries for the dedicated things.(AA)

21 The descendants of Ladan, who were Gershonites through Ladan and who were heads of families belonging to Ladan the Gershonite,(AB) were Jehieli, 22 the sons of Jehieli, Zetham and his brother Joel. They were in charge of the treasuries(AC) of the temple of the Lord.

23 From the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites and the Uzzielites:(AD)

24 Shubael,(AE) a descendant of Gershom son of Moses, was the official in charge of the treasuries. 25 His relatives through Eliezer: Rehabiah his son, Jeshaiah his son, Joram his son, Zikri his son and Shelomith(AF) his son. 26 Shelomith and his relatives were in charge of all the treasuries for the things dedicated(AG) by King David, by the heads of families who were the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and by the other army commanders. 27 Some of the plunder taken in battle they dedicated for the repair of the temple of the Lord. 28 And everything dedicated by Samuel the seer(AH) and by Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner and Joab son of Zeruiah, and all the other dedicated things were in the care of Shelomith and his relatives.

29 From the Izharites: Kenaniah and his sons were assigned duties away from the temple, as officials and judges(AI) over Israel.

30 From the Hebronites: Hashabiah(AJ) and his relatives—seventeen hundred able men—were responsible in Israel west of the Jordan for all the work of the Lord and for the king’s service. 31 As for the Hebronites,(AK) Jeriah was their chief according to the genealogical records of their families. In the fortieth(AL) year of David’s reign a search was made in the records, and capable men among the Hebronites were found at Jazer in Gilead. 32 Jeriah had twenty-seven hundred relatives, who were able men and heads of families, and King David put them in charge of the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh for every matter pertaining to God and for the affairs of the king.

Army Divisions

27 This is the list of the Israelites—heads of families, commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and their officers, who served the king in all that concerned the army divisions that were on duty month by month throughout the year. Each division consisted of 24,000 men.

2 In charge of the first division, for the first month, was Jashobeam(AM) son of Zabdiel. There were 24,000 men in his division. 3 He was a descendant of Perez and chief of all the army officers for the first month.

4 In charge of the division for the second month was Dodai(AN) the Ahohite; Mikloth was the leader of his division. There were 24,000 men in his division.

5 The third army commander, for the third month, was Benaiah(AO) son of Jehoiada the priest. He was chief and there were 24,000 men in his division. 6 This was the Benaiah who was a mighty warrior among the Thirty and was over the Thirty. His son Ammizabad was in charge of his division.

7 The fourth, for the fourth month, was Asahel(AP) the brother of Joab; his son Zebadiah was his successor. There were 24,000 men in his division.

8 The fifth, for the fifth month, was the commander Shamhuth(AQ) the Izrahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.

9 The sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira(AR) the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite. There were 24,000 men in his division.

10 The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez(AS) the Pelonite, an Ephraimite. There were 24,000 men in his division.

11 The eighth, for the eighth month, was Sibbekai(AT) the Hushathite, a Zerahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.

12 The ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer(AU) the Anathothite, a Benjamite. There were 24,000 men in his division.

13 The tenth, for the tenth month, was Maharai(AV) the Netophathite, a Zerahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.

14 The eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah(AW) the Pirathonite, an Ephraimite. There were 24,000 men in his division.

15 The twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Heldai(AX) the Netophathite, from the family of Othniel.(AY) There were 24,000 men in his division.

Leaders of the Tribes

16 The leaders of the tribes of Israel:

over the Reubenites: Eliezer son of Zikri;

over the Simeonites: Shephatiah son of Maakah;

17 over Levi: Hashabiah(AZ) son of Kemuel;

over Aaron: Zadok;(BA)

18 over Judah: Elihu, a brother of David;

over Issachar: Omri son of Michael;

19 over Zebulun: Ishmaiah son of Obadiah;

over Naphtali: Jerimoth son of Azriel;

20 over the Ephraimites: Hoshea son of Azaziah;

over half the tribe of Manasseh: Joel son of Pedaiah;

21 over the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead: Iddo son of Zechariah;

over Benjamin: Jaasiel son of Abner;

22 over Dan: Azarel son of Jeroham.

These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.

23 David did not take the number of the men twenty years old or less,(BB) because the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars(BC) in the sky. 24 Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish. God’s wrath came on Israel on account of this numbering,(BD) and the number was not entered in the book[k] of the annals of King David.

The King’s Overseers

25 Azmaveth son of Adiel was in charge of the royal storehouses.

Jonathan son of Uzziah was in charge of the storehouses in the outlying districts, in the towns, the villages and the watchtowers.

26 Ezri son of Kelub was in charge of the workers who farmed the land.

27 Shimei the Ramathite was in charge of the vineyards.

Zabdi the Shiphmite was in charge of the produce of the vineyards for the wine vats.

28 Baal-Hanan the Gederite was in charge of the olive and sycamore-fig(BE) trees in the western foothills.

Joash was in charge of the supplies of olive oil.

29 Shitrai the Sharonite was in charge of the herds grazing in Sharon.(BF)

Shaphat son of Adlai was in charge of the herds in the valleys.

30 Obil the Ishmaelite was in charge of the camels.

Jehdeiah the Meronothite was in charge of the donkeys.

31 Jaziz the Hagrite(BG) was in charge of the flocks.

All these were the officials in charge of King David’s property.

32 Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of insight and a scribe. Jehiel son of Hakmoni took care of the king’s sons.

33 Ahithophel(BH) was the king’s counselor.

Hushai(BI) the Arkite was the king’s confidant. 34 Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah and by Abiathar.(BJ)

Joab(BK) was the commander of the royal army.

4 1-2 愛する皆さん。さらに付け加えます。あなたがたは日々の生活で、どうしたら神をお喜ばせできるかを、すでに知っているはずです。そのために、主イエスの教えを学んだのですから。そこでお願いします。というより、これは主イエスの命令と思ってほしいのですが、どうか、その目標に向かってさらに熱心に励んでください。 3-4 神が望んでおられることは、あなたがたがきよくなることです。ですから、あらゆる不品行の罪を避け、きよらかな品位ある結婚生活を送ってほしいのです。 5 神を知らない異教徒のように、情欲におぼれてはいけません。 6 また、他人の妻を奪って、その人を裏切るようなことをしてはいけません。前もってきびしく警告しておいたように、主はこれらについて厳罰を下されるからです。 7 私たちが神に召されたのは、汚れた思いや情欲のとりこになったりするためではなく、きよく清潔な生活を送るためです。 8 もし、これらの戒めに従うことを拒むなら、人にではなく、聖霊を与えてくださった神にそむくことになるのです。

9 また、クリスチャン同士の純粋な兄弟愛については、何も言う必要がないと確信しています。なぜなら、神ご自身があなたがたに、互いに愛し合うことを教えてくださったからです。 10 あなたがたの愛は、国中のすべてのクリスチャンをおおうほど強いものだと聞いています。そうであればこそ、心からお願いしたいのです。ますます兄弟愛を深めなさい。 11 そして、以前にも教えたように、静かな生活を送り、仕事に身を入れ、喜んで働きなさい。 12 そうすれば、クリスチャンでない人たちからも信用され、尊敬されることでしょう。また、他の人に負担をかけなくてすむでしょう。

クリスチャンが死んだら？

13 それから、皆さん。クリスチャンが死んだらどうなるか、よく知っておいてほしいのです。悲しみのあまり取り乱して、何の希望もない人たちと同じようにならないためです。 14 私たちは、イエスが死んで復活されたことを確かなことと信じています。ですから、イエスが帰って来られる時、すでに死んで世を去ったすべてのクリスチャンを、神が共に連れて来てくださると信じてよいのです。 15 私は主から直接聞いたとおりを伝えるのですが、主が再び来られる時、私たちがまだ生きていたとしても、すでに墓の中にいる人たちをさしおいて主にお会いすることは、断じてありません。 16 主は、大号令と、天使の長の声と、神の召集ラッパの響きと共に天から下って来られます。その時、まず最初に復活して主にお会いできるのは、すでにこの世を去っているクリスチャンです。 17 それから、なお生きて地上に残っている私たちが、いっしょに雲に包まれて引き上げられ、空中で主とお会いするのです。そして、いつまでも主と共に過ごすことになります。 18 ですから、このことをわきまえて、互いに慰め合い、励まし合いなさい。

Living to Please God

4 As for other matters, brothers and sisters,(A) we instructed you how to live(B) in order to please God,(C) as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

3 It is God’s will(D) that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;(E) 4 that each of you should learn to control your own body[a](F) in a way that is holy and honorable, 5 not in passionate lust(G) like the pagans,(H) who do not know God;(I) 6 and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.[b](J) The Lord will punish(K) all those who commit such sins,(L) as we told you and warned you before. 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.(M) 8 Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.(N)

9 Now about your love for one another(O) we do not need to write to you,(P) for you yourselves have been taught by God(Q) to love each other.(R) 10 And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia.(S) Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more,(T) 11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands,(U) just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders(V) and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

Believers Who Have Died

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed(W) about those who sleep in death,(X) so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.(Y) 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again,(Z) and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.(AA) 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord,(AB) will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.(AC) 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven,(AD) with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel(AE) and with the trumpet call of God,(AF) and the dead in Christ will rise first.(AG) 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left(AH) will be caught up together with them in the clouds(AI) to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord(AJ) forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another(AK) with these words.
