Víra v Božího Syna
5 Kdo věří, že Ježíš je Spasitel, patří do Boží rodiny, a kdo miluje Otce, miluje i jeho děti. 2-4 Naše vzájemná láska prozrazuje, jak milujeme a posloucháme Boha.
Jeho přikázání nejsou těžká, plníme-li je z lásky. Když posloucháme Boha jako děti, nepodléháme zlu. Vítězství v tomto zápase nám přináší víra v Ježíše Krista jako Božího Syna. Bez ní nemáme naději.
5-6 K víře, že jsme zachráněni, nás opravňují tři skutečnosti: to, že se dal Ježíš pokřtít, jako by byl hříšník; to, že místo nás zemřel na kříži jako zločinec; a to, že jsme obdrželi Ducha svatého, který nám to potvrzuje. 7 Máme tedy tři svědky: 8 Ducha svatého, vodu a krev, a ti tři svědčí shodně.
9 Přijímáme-li svědectví lidí, proč nevěřit tomu, co o svém Synu říká Bůh? 10-12 Kdo tedy věří v Ježíše jako v Božího Syna, dává Bohu za pravdu. Kdo Bohu nevěří, dělá z něho lháře, protože odmítá svědectví Otce o Synu. Kdo přijímá toto svědectví, stojí na prahu věčného života. Dveře nám otevřel Boží Syn. Bez něho se dovnitř nedostaneme.
Závěr
13 To je smysl mého dopisu, abyste měli jistotu, že věříte-li v Božího Syna, máte věčný život.
14-15 Můžeme si však být jisti i tím, že už dnes nás slyší, když o něco prosíme v souladu s jeho vůlí. A nejen slyší, ale dává nám to, oč ho prosíme.
16 Vidíte-li, že bratr hřeší, proste za něj, aby neztratil život. Ale nemyslete si, že modlitbami zachráníte člověka, který se zatvrdil a odmítá činit pokání. 17 Každá neposlušnost je hřích, ale hřích bez pokání vede k smrti. 18 Víme, že kdo je skutečně Boží dítě, nehřeší, protože ho Boží Syn chrání a ten zlý na něho nemá právo. 19 Jenom pod Boží mocí jsme v bezpečí, všude jinde jsme vydáni zlému napospas.
20 Boží Syn, Ježíš Kristus, přišel, abychom v něm poznali zachránce a přimkli se k němu. On je pravý Bůh a dárce věčného života. 21 A proto si ho nedejte nikým a ničím zastínit.

5 Each man that believeth that Jesus is Christ, is born of God; and each man that loveth him that engendered [and each that loveth him that gendereth], loveth him that is born of him.
2 In this thing we know, that we love the children of God, when we love God, and do his commandments.
3 For this is the charity of God, that we keep his commandments; and his commandments be not heavy [and his commandments be not grievous].
4 For all thing that is born of God, overcometh the world; and this is the victory that overcometh the world, our faith.
5 And who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 This is Jesus Christ, that came by water and blood; not in water only, but in water and blood. And the Spirit is he that witnesseth, that Christ is [the] truth.
7 For three be, that give witnessing in heaven, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost [For three be, that bear witness in heaven, the Father, the Word, or Son, and the Holy Ghost]; and these three be one.
8 And three be, that give witnessing in earth, the Spirit, water, and blood; and these three be one.
9 If we receive the witnessing of men, the witnessing of God is more; for this is the witnessing of God, that is more, for he witnessed of his Son.
10 He that believeth in the Son of God, hath the witnessing of God in him. He that believeth not to the Son, maketh him a liar; for he believeth not in the witnessing, that God witnessed of his Son.
11 And this is the witnessing, for God gave to you everlasting life [for God gave to us everlasting life], and this life is in his Son.
12 He that hath the Son of God, hath also life [He that hath the Son, hath life]; he that hath not the Son of God, hath not life.
13 I write to you these things, that ye know, that ye have everlasting life, which believe in the name of God's Son.
14 And this is the trust which we have to God [And this is the trust that we have in God], that whatever thing we ask after his will, he shall hear us.
15 And we know, that he heareth us, whatever thing we ask; we know, that we have the askings, that we ask of him [which we ask of him].
16 He that knoweth that his brother sinneth a sin not to death [He that knoweth his brother to sin a sin not to death], ask he, and life shall be given to him that sinneth not to death. There is a sin to death; not for it I say, that any man pray.
17 Each wickedness is sin, and there is [a] sin to death.
18 We know, that each man that is born of God, sinneth not; but the generation of God keepeth him, and the wicked toucheth him not.
19 We know, that we be of God, and all the world is set in evil [and all the world is put in wicked].
20 And we know, that the Son of God came in flesh, and gave to us wit, that we know him very God, and be in the very Son [Jesus] of him [and be in the very Son Jesus of him]. This is very God, and everlasting life.
21 My little sons, keep ye you from maumets. [Amen.] [Little sons, keep ye you from simulacra, or covetousness. Amen.]

2. La fe, raíz del amor
5 Todo el que tiene fe en que Jesús es el Mesías, es hijo de Dios; y el que ama a un padre, ama también a los hijos de ese padre. 2 Cuando amamos a Dios y hacemos lo que él manda, sabemos que amamos también a los hijos de Dios. 3 El amar a Dios consiste en obedecer sus mandamientos; y sus mandamientos no son una carga, 4 porque todo el que es hijo de Dios vence al mundo. Y nuestra fe nos ha dado la victoria sobre el mundo. 5 El que cree que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios, vence al mundo.
6 La venida de Jesucristo quedó señalada con agua y sangre; no sólo con agua, sino con agua y sangre. El Espíritu mismo es testigo de esto, y el Espíritu es la verdad. 7 Tres son los testigos: 8 el Espíritu, el agua y la sangre; y los tres están de acuerdo. 9 Aceptamos el testimonio de los hombres, pero el testimonio de Dios es de mucho más valor, porque consiste en el testimonio que Dios ha dado acerca de su Hijo. 10 El que cree en el Hijo de Dios, lleva este testimonio en su propio corazón; el que no cree en Dios, lo hace aparecer como mentiroso, porque no cree en el testimonio que Dios ha dado acerca de su Hijo. 11 Este testimonio es que Dios nos ha dado vida eterna, y que esta vida está en su Hijo. 12 El que tiene al Hijo de Dios, tiene también esta vida; pero el que no tiene al Hijo de Dios, no la tiene.
13 Les escribo esto a ustedes que creen en el Hijo de Dios, para que sepan que tienen vida eterna.
14 Tenemos confianza en Dios, porque sabemos que si le pedimos algo conforme a su voluntad, él nos oye. 15 Y así como sabemos que Dios oye nuestras oraciones, también sabemos que ya tenemos lo que le hemos pedido.
16 Si alguno ve que su hermano está cometiendo un pecado que no lleva a la muerte, debe orar, y Dios dará vida al hermano, si se trata de un pecado que no lleva a la muerte. Hay un pecado que lleva a la muerte, y por ese pecado no digo que se deba orar. 17 Toda maldad es pecado; pero hay pecado que no lleva a la muerte.
18 Sabemos que el que tiene a Dios como Padre, no sigue pecando, porque el Hijo de Dios lo cuida, y el maligno no lo toca. 19 Sabemos que somos de Dios y que el mundo entero está bajo el poder del maligno. 20 Sabemos también que el Hijo de Dios ha venido y nos ha dado entendimiento para conocer al Dios verdadero. Vivimos unidos al que es verdadero, es decir, a su Hijo Jesucristo. Éste es el Dios verdadero y la vida eterna. 21 Hijitos, cuídense de los dioses falsos.

14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
