2 Братья, вы знаете, что наш приход к вам не был напрасным. 2 Нам, как вы знаете, пришлось пережить много страданий и унижений в Филиппах, но с помощью нашего Бога мы смело возвещали вам Его Радостную Весть, невзирая на сильное сопротивление. 3 В нашем призыве нет никакой лжи и никаких нечистых побуждений, и мы не пытаемся вас обмануть. 4 Наоборот, мы говорим, как люди, которых Бог испытал и которым доверил возвещать Радостную Весть. Мы стремимся угодить не людям, а Богу, испытывающему наши сердца. 5 Вы знаете, что мы никогда не льстили и не притворялись из корыстных побуждений, Бог этому свидетель. 6 Мы не искали славы от людей, ни от вас, ни от кого-либо другого.

7 Будучи апостолами Христа, мы, может быть, и имеем право претендовать на вашу помощь, но мы вас не обременяли, а наоборот, были нежны с вами, подобно тому, как кормящая мать заботится о своих младенцах. 8 Мы полюбили вас так сильно[a], что готовы были поделиться с вами не только Радостной Вестью Божьей, но и самой нашей жизнью – так стали вы нам дороги. 9 Вы помните, братья, когда мы возвещали среди вас Радостную Весть, как мы трудились до изнурения день и ночь, чтобы никого из вас не обременять.

10 Вы и Бог – свидетели тому, что мы, находясь среди вас, верующих, во всем поступали свято, справедливо и безукоризненно. 11 Вы знаете, что мы обращались с каждым из вас так, как отец обращается со своими детьми: 12 ободряли вас, уговаривали и умоляли вас жить достойной жизнью перед Богом, призывающим вас в Свое Царство и в Свою славу.

Пример твердости веры при гонениях

13 Мы всегда благодарим Бога и за то, что, когда вы приняли слово Божье, услышанное от нас, вы приняли его не как человеческую выдумку, а таким, каково оно и есть, – как слово Божье, мощно действующее в вас, верящих. 14 Вы, братья, последовали примеру церквей Божьих в Иудее, живущих в Иисусе Христе. Вы испытали от жителей вашей страны те же гонения, что и эти церкви от иудеев, 15 которые убили и Господа Иисуса, и пророков, а нас выгнали. Они не угождают Богу и становятся враждебны всем прочим людям, 16 мешая нам говорить язычникам, чтобы те могли быть спасены. Тем самым они лишь дополняют меру своих грехов, но гнев Бога наконец настиг их.

Желание Павла вновь посетить церковь

17 Братья, мы были разлучены с вами на некоторое время, разлучены телом, но не душой, и предпринимали все возможное, чтобы вас увидеть. 18 Мы очень хотели прийти к вам, и я, Павел, не раз собирался сделать это, но сатана препятствовал нам. 19 Ведь кто, как не вы, наша надежда, наша радость, наш венец хвалы перед Господом нашим Иисусом, когда Он вернется?! 20 Потому что вы – слава наша и радость!

Тем самым они лишь дополняют меру своих грехов, но гнев Всевышнего наконец настиг их.

Paul’s Approach to Ministry in Thessalonica

2 For you yourselves know, brothers, our reception with you, that it was not in vain, 2 but after we had already suffered and been mistreated in Philippi, just as you know, we had the courage in our God to speak to you the gospel of God amid much opposition. 3 For our exhortation is not from error or from impurity or with deceit, 4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, thus we speak, not as pleasing people but God, who examines our hearts. 5 For never[a] did we come with a word of flattery, just as you know, nor with a pretext of greediness (God is witness), 6 nor seeking glory from people, neither from you nor from others. 7 Although we could have insisted on our own importance[b][c] as apostles of Christ, yet we became infants in your midst, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children. 8 Longing for you in this way, we determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own souls, because you had become dear to us.

9 For you remember, brothers, our labor and hardship: working by night and day in order not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. 10 You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and righteously and blamelessly we became to you who believe, 11 just as you know how we treated each one of you, like a father his own children, 12 exhorting and consoling you and insisting that you live in a manner worthy of God, who calls you to his own kingdom and glory.

The Thessalonians’ Response to Paul’s Message

13 And because of this we also give thanks to God constantly, that when you[d] received God’s word that you heard[e] from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God, which also is at work in you who believe. 14 For you became imitators, brothers, of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus, because you also suffered the same things at the hands of your own people, just as they themselves did also at the hands of the Jews, 15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and who persecuted us, and who are not pleasing to God and are opposed to all people, 16 hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles in order that they may be saved, so that they always fill up their sins. But wrath has come upon them to the end.[f]

Paul’s Desire to Revisit the Thessalonians

17 But when[g] we were made orphans by separation from you, brothers, for a short time[h] (in face, not in heart), we were even more eager with great desire to see your face, 18 because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, on more than one occasion[i]—and Satan hindered us. 19 For who is our hope or joy or crown of boasting? Is it not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at his coming? 20 For you are our glory and joy.

Paul’s Ministry in Thessalonica

2 You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you(A) was not without results.(B) 2 We had previously suffered(C) and been treated outrageously in Philippi,(D) as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition.(E) 3 For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives,(F) nor are we trying to trick you.(G) 4 On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.(H) We are not trying to please people(I) but God, who tests our hearts.(J) 5 You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed(K)—God is our witness.(L) 6 We were not looking for praise from people,(M) not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles(N) of Christ we could have asserted our authority.(O) 7 Instead, we were like young children[a] among you.

Just as a nursing mother cares for her children,(P) 8 so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God(Q) but our lives as well.(R) 9 Surely you remember, brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship; we worked(S) night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone(T) while we preached the gospel of God to you. 10 You are witnesses,(U) and so is God,(V) of how holy,(W) righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. 11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,(X) 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy(Y) of God, who calls(Z) you into his kingdom and glory.

13 And we also thank God continually(AA) because, when you received the word of God,(AB) which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. 14 For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators(AC) of God’s churches in Judea,(AD) which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people(AE) the same things those churches suffered from the Jews 15 who killed the Lord Jesus(AF) and the prophets(AG) and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone 16 in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles(AH) so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit.(AI) The wrath of God has come upon them at last.[b]

Paul’s Longing to See the Thessalonians

17 But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought),(AJ) out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.(AK) 18 For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan(AL) blocked our way.(AM) 19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown(AN) in which we will glory(AO) in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes?(AP) Is it not you? 20 Indeed, you are our glory(AQ) and joy.
