11 Let a woman learn quietly (A)with all submissiveness. 12 (B)I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 (C)For Adam was formed first, (D)then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but (E)the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through (F)childbearing—if they continue in (G)faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

Qualifications for Overseers

The saying is (H)trustworthy: If anyone aspires to (I)the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore (J)an overseer[a] must be above reproach, (K)the husband of one wife,[b] (L)sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, (M)hospitable, (N)able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but (O)gentle, not quarrelsome, (P)not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity (Q)keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for (R)God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may (S)become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by (T)outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into (U)a snare of the devil.

Qualifications for Deacons

(V)Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,[c] (W)not addicted to much wine, (X)not greedy for dishonest gain. They must (Y)hold the mystery of the faith with (Z)a clear conscience. 10 And (AA)let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 (AB)Their wives likewise[d] must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, (AC)faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be (AD)the husband of one wife, (AE)managing their children and their own households well. 13 For (AF)those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

Qualifications for Elders

(A)This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and (B)appoint elders in every town as I directed you— (C)if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife,[a] and his children are believers[b] and not open to the charge of (D)debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer,[c] (E)as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not (F)be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent (G)or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, (H)and disciplined. He must (I)hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in (J)sound[d] doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

10 For there are many who are insubordinate, (K)empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of (L)the circumcision party.[e] 11 They must be silenced, since (M)they are upsetting whole families by teaching (N)for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. 12 (O)One of the Cretans,[f] a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”[g] 13 This testimony is true. Therefore (P)rebuke them (Q)sharply, that they (R)may be sound in the faith, 14 (S)not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and (T)the commands of people (U)who turn away from the truth. 15 (V)To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and (W)unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both (X)their minds and their consciences are defiled. 16 (Y)They profess to know God, but they (Z)deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, (AA)unfit for any good work.
