Nasihat tentang memperhatikan sesama
5 Janganlah menegur laki-laki yang lebih tua secara kasar. Bicaralah kepadanya seperti kamu berbicara dengan ayahmu. Perlakukanlah laki-laki yang lebih muda seperti seorang saudara. 2 Perlakukanlah perempuan yang lebih tua seperti ibu. Dan perlakukanlah perempuan yang lebih muda dengan hormat seperti saudara perempuan.
Mengenai para janda
3 Hormatilah janda-janda yang tidak mampu.[a] 4 Tetapi jika seorang janda mempunyai anak atau cucu, biarlah keluarganya belajar untuk memenuhi tugas mereka untuk memelihara keluarganya sendiri. Dengan begitu, mereka dapat membalas budi orang tua mereka. Hal ini sungguh menyenangkan Allah. 5 Seorang janda yang benar-benar memerlukan bantuan adalah dia yang hidup sendirian saja. Ia percaya pada Allah untuk memenuhi kebutuhannya. Ia berdoa siang dan malam untuk memohon pertolongan Allah. 6 Namun, janda yang hidup untuk memuaskan dirinya sendiri, sesungguhnya ia sudah mati meskipun ia masih hidup. 7 Beritahukanlah kepada orang percaya untuk memperhatikan keluarganya supaya tidak ada orang yang berkata bahwa mereka bersalah. 8 Setiap orang percaya harus memelihara keluarganya sendiri. Jika ia tidak melakukannya, maka ia menolak apa yang kita percaya. Orang percaya yang seperti itu adalah lebih buruk daripada orang yang tidak percaya.
9 Hanya perempuan yang berumur 60 tahun atau lebih yang dapat ditambahkan ke dalam daftar janda. Ia haruslah perempuan yang telah setia kepada suaminya.[b] 10 Ia haruslah dikenal karena perbuatan baik yang dilakukannya, misalnya, membesarkan anak-anak, memberi tumpangan, mencuci kaki[c] orang kudus, menolong orang yang kesusahan dan menggunakan hidupnya untuk melakukan berbagai perbuatan baik.
11 Tetapi jangan masukkan janda yang lebih muda ke dalam daftar tadi. Sebab jika keinginan jasmani mereka yang kuat membuat mereka menjauhi Kristus, maka mereka pasti ingin menikah lagi. 12 Jadi, mereka akan mendapat hukuman atas diri mereka sendiri karena tidak menepati janji yang mereka buat sebelumnya. 13 Selain itu janda-janda muda ini mulai membuang waktunya dengan keluar-masuk rumah. Mereka juga mulai membicarakan kejelekan orang lain dan mencampuri urusan orang lain. Mereka membicarakan hal-hal yang tidak pantas dibicarakan. 14 Karena itu, aku lebih suka kalau janda-janda yang lebih muda menikah lagi saja, mempunyai anak dan mengurus rumah tangganya. Jika mereka melakukan itu, musuh kita tidak akan mempunyai alasan untuk mencela kita. 15 Sayang sekali sebagian janda yang lebih muda sudah berbalik mengikuti Setan.
16 Kalau seorang perempuan yang percaya mempunyai anggota keluarga yang janda,[d] ia harus menolong mereka. Lalu gereja tidak harus dibebani dan dapat memelihara janda-janda lain yang benar-benar memerlukan bantuan.
Tentang pemimpin dan hal-hal lainnya
17 Mereka yang memimpin gereja dengan baik seharusnya menerima penghormatan berganda,[e] terutama mereka yang bekerja keras untuk berkhotbah dan mengajar. 18 Seperti yang dikatakan Kitab Suci, “Jika seekor lembu sedang melakukan pekerjaan untuk memisahkan gandum, janganlah menutup mulutnya untuk tidak makan gandum,”(A) dan juga, “Orang yang bekerja seharusnya mendapatkan upahnya.”(B)
19 Janganlah mendengar orang yang menuduh pemimpin gereja, kecuali jika ada dua atau tiga orang yang berkata bahwa pemimpin itu memang bersalah. 20 Katakan kepada para pemimpin gereja yang berbuat dosa bahwa mereka bersalah. Lakukanlah hal ini di hadapan seluruh gereja supaya ini menjadi peringatan bagi lainnya.
21 Di hadapan Allah, Yesus Kristus dan para malaikat pilihan, aku katakan kepadamu untuk menjalankan perintah ini tanpa prasangka.[f] Perlakukanlah sama kepada setiap orang.
22 Jangan terburu-buru menumpangkan tangan atas seseorang untuk membuatnya menjadi pemimpin gereja. Janganlah terlibat dalam dosa yang dilakukan orang lain. Jagalah dirimu untuk bebas dari setiap kesalahan.
23 Timotius, janganlah hanya minum air putih, minumlah sedikit anggur juga. Ini akan bermanfaat untuk lambungmu agar penyakitmu tidak sering kambuh.
24 Dosa-dosa sebagian orang sangat mudah dilihat. Dosa mereka menunjukkan bahwa mereka akan dihukum. Tetapi dosa-dosa sebagian orang lainnya, baru akan terlihat di kemudian hari. 25 Demikian juga dengan perbuatan baik yang dilakukan orang. Sebagiannya gampang terlihat. Namun, meskipun saat ini tidak terlihat dengan jelas, tapi tidak ada satu pun yang akan tetap tersembunyi selamanya.

Widows, Elders and Slaves
5 Do not rebuke an older man(A) harshly,(B) but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men(C) as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.
3 Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.(D) 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents,(E) for this is pleasing to God.(F) 5 The widow who is really in need(G) and left all alone puts her hope in God(H) and continues night and day to pray(I) and to ask God for help. 6 But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.(J) 7 Give the people these instructions,(K) so that no one may be open to blame. 8 Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied(L) the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, 10 and is well known for her good deeds,(M) such as bringing up children, showing hospitality,(N) washing the feet(O) of the Lord’s people, helping those in trouble(P) and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.
11 As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. 12 Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. 13 Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies(Q) who talk nonsense,(R) saying things they ought not to. 14 So I counsel younger widows to marry,(S) to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander.(T) 15 Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan.(U)
16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her care, she should continue to help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.(V)
17 The elders(W) who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor,(X) especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,”[a](Y) and “The worker deserves his wages.”[b](Z) 19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder(AA) unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.(AB) 20 But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove(AC) before everyone, so that the others may take warning.(AD) 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus(AE) and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.
22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands,(AF) and do not share in the sins of others.(AG) Keep yourself pure.(AH)
23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine(AI) because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.
