6 All who are forced to serve as slaves should consider their masters worthy of full respect. Then people will not speak evil things against God’s name and against what we teach. 2 Some slaves have masters who are believers. They shouldn’t show their masters disrespect just because they are also believers. Instead, they should serve them even better. That’s because their masters are loved by them as believers. These masters are committed to caring for their slaves.
People Who Teach Lies or Love Money
These are the things you are to teach. Try hard to get the believers to do them. 3 Suppose someone teaches something different than I have taught. Suppose that person doesn’t agree with the true teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ. Suppose they don’t agree with godly teaching. 4 Then that person is proud and doesn’t understand anything. They like to argue more than they should. They can’t agree about what words mean. All of this results in wanting what others have. It causes fighting, harmful talk, and evil distrust. 5 It stirs up trouble all the time among people whose minds are twisted by sin. The truth they once had has been taken away from them. They think they can get rich by being godly.
6 You gain a lot when you live a godly life. But you must be happy with what you have. 7 We didn’t bring anything into the world. We can’t take anything out of it. 8 If we have food and clothing, we will be happy with that. 9 People who want to get rich are tempted. They fall into a trap. They are tripped up by wanting many foolish and harmful things. Those who live like that are dragged down by what they do. They are destroyed and die. 10 Love for money causes all kinds of evil. Some people want to get rich. They have wandered away from the faith. They have wounded themselves with many sorrows.
Paul Gives a Final Command to Timothy
11 But you are a man of God. Run away from all these things. Try hard to do what is right and godly. Have faith, love and gentleness. Hold on to what you believe. 12 Fight the good fight along with all other believers. Take hold of eternal life. You were chosen for it when you openly told others what you believe. Many witnesses heard you. 13 God gives life to everything. Christ Jesus told the truth when he was a witness in front of Pontius Pilate. In the sight of God and Christ, I give you a command. 14 Obey it until our Lord Jesus Christ appears. Obey it completely. Then no one can find fault with it or you. 15 God will bring Jesus back at a time that pleases him. God is the blessed and only Ruler. He is the greatest King of all. He is the most powerful Lord of all. 16 God is the only one who can’t die. He lives in light that no one can get close to. No one has seen him. No one can see him. Honor and power belong to him forever. Amen.
17 Command people who are rich in this world not to be proud. Tell them not to put their hope in riches. Wealth is so uncertain. Command those who are rich to put their hope in God. He richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 Command the rich to do what is good. Tell them to be rich in doing good things. They must give freely. They must be willing to share. 19 In this way, they will store up true riches for themselves. It will provide a firm basis for the next life. Then they will take hold of the life that really is life.
20 Timothy, guard what God has trusted you with. Turn away from godless chatter. Stay away from opposing ideas that are falsely called knowledge. 21 Some people believe them. By doing that they have turned away from the faith.

Honor Masters
6 Let as many (A)bondservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be blasphemed. 2 And those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren, but rather serve them because those who are benefited are believers and beloved. Teach and exhort these things.
Error and Greed
3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to (B)wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, (C)and to the [a]doctrine which accords with godliness, 4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, 5 [b]useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. [c]From (D)such withdraw yourself.
6 Now godliness with (E)contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, [d]and it is (F)certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be (G)content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
The Good Confession
11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus (H)who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, 15 which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only [e]Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in (I)unapproachable light, (J)whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.
Instructions to the Rich
17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain (K)riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things (L)to enjoy. 18 Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, 19 (M)storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
Guard the Faith
20 O Timothy! (N)Guard what was committed to your trust, (O)avoiding the profane and [f]idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge— 21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith.

6 Was Knechte sind, im Sklavenstand, die sollen ihre eigenen Herren aller Ehre wert halten, damit nicht der Name Gottes und die Lehre verlästert werden. 2 Die aber, welche gläubige Herren haben, sollen diese darum nicht verachten, weil sie Brüder sind, sondern ihnen um so lieber dienen, weil sie Gläubige und Geliebte sind und von ihnen auch bessere Behandlung[a] erfahren.So sollst du lehren und ermahnen!
Warnung vor Irrlehrern und Habsucht
3 Wenn jemand anders lehrt und sich nicht an die gesunden Worte unsres Herrn Jesus Christus hält und an die der Gottseligkeit entsprechende Lehre, 4 so ist er aufgeblasen und versteht doch nichts, sondern krankt an Streitfragen und Wortgezänk, woraus Neid, Hader, Lästerung, böser Argwohn entstehen. 5 Zänkereien von Menschen, welche verdorbenen Sinnes und der Wahrheit beraubt sind und die Gottseligkeit für eine Erwerbsquelle halten, von solchen halte dich ferne!
6 Es ist allerdings die Gottseligkeit eine bedeutende Erwerbsquelle, wenn sie mit Genügsamkeit verbunden wird. 7 Denn wir haben nichts in die Welt gebracht; so ist es klar, daß wir auch nichts hinausnehmen können. 8 Wenn wir aber Nahrung und Kleidung haben, soll uns das genügen! 9 Denn die, welche reich werden wollen, fallen in Versuchung und Schlingen und viele törichte und schädliche Lüste, welche die Menschen in Verderben und Untergang stürzen. 10 Denn die Geldgier ist eine Wurzel aller Übel; etliche, die sich ihr hingaben, sind vom Glauben abgeirrt und haben sich selbst viel Schmerzen verursacht.
Ermahnung an Timotheus, den geistlichen Gütern nachzujagen und dem Evangelium treu zu bleiben
11 Du aber, Gottesmensch, fliehe solches, jage aber nach Gerechtigkeit, Gottseligkeit, Glauben, Liebe, Geduld, Sanftmut! 12 Kämpfe den guten Kampf des Glaubens, ergreife das ewige Leben, zu welchem du berufen bist und worüber du das gute Bekenntnis vor vielen Zeugen abgelegt hast. 13 Ich gebiete dir vor Gott, der alles lebendig macht, und vor Christus Jesus, der vor Pontius Pilatus das gute Bekenntnis bezeugt hat, 14 daß du das Gebot unbefleckt und untadelig bewahrest bis zur Erscheinung unsres Herrn Jesus Christus, 15 welche zu seiner Zeit zeigen wird der selige und allein Gewaltige, der König der Könige und der Herr der Herrschenden, 16 der allein Unsterblichkeit hat, der in einem unzugänglichen Lichte wohnt, welchen kein Mensch gesehen hat noch sehen kann; Ihm sei Ehre und ewige Macht! Amen.
17 Den Reichen im jetzigen Zeitalter gebiete, daß sie nicht stolz seien, auch nicht ihre Hoffnung auf die Unbeständigkeit des Reichtums setzen, sondern auf den lebendigen Gott, der uns alles reichlich zum Genuß darreicht, 18 daß sie Gutes tun, reich werden an guten Werken, freigebig seien, mitteilsam, 19 und so für sich selbst ein schönes Kapital für die Zukunft sammeln, damit sie das wahre Leben erlangen.
20 O Timotheus, bewahre das anvertraute Gut, meide das unheilige[b] Geschwätz und die Einwürfe der fälschlich sogenannten „Erkenntnis“, 21 zu welcher sich etliche bekannten und darüber das Glaubensziel aus den Augen verloren.
Die Gnade sei mit dir!

6 All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect,(A) so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered.(B) 2 Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers.(C) Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare[a] of their slaves.
False Teachers and the Love of Money
These are the things you are to teach and insist on.(D) 3 If anyone teaches otherwise(E) and does not agree to the sound instruction(F) of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 they are conceited(G) and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words(H) that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth(I) and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
6 But godliness with contentment(J) is great gain.(K) 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.(L) 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.(M) 9 Those who want to get rich(N) fall into temptation and a trap(O) and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money(P) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith(Q) and pierced themselves with many griefs.(R)
Final Charge to Timothy
11 But you, man of God,(S) flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,(T) faith, love,(U) endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight(V) of the faith. Take hold of(W) the eternal life(X) to which you were called when you made your good confession(Y) in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate(Z) made the good confession,(AA) I charge you(AB) 14 to keep this command without spot or blame(AC) until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,(AD) 15 which God will bring about in his own time(AE)—God, the blessed(AF) and only Ruler,(AG) the King of kings and Lord of lords,(AH) 16 who alone is immortal(AI) and who lives in unapproachable light,(AJ) whom no one has seen or can see.(AK) To him be honor and might forever. Amen.(AL)
17 Command those who are rich(AM) in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth,(AN) which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God,(AO) who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.(AP) 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds,(AQ) and to be generous and willing to share.(AR) 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves(AS) as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of(AT) the life that is truly life.
20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted(AU) to your care. Turn away from godless chatter(AV) and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.(AW)
