For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things,(A) holding promise for both the present life(B) and the life to come.(C) This is a trustworthy saying(D) that deserves full acceptance. 10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God,(E) who is the Savior of all people,(F) and especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach these things.(G) 12 Don’t let anyone look down on you(H) because you are young, but set an example(I) for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith(J) and in purity. 13 Until I come,(K) devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture,(L) to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy(M) when the body of elders(N) laid their hands on you.(O)

15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save(P) both yourself and your hearers.

Widows, Elders and Slaves

Do not rebuke an older man(Q) harshly,(R) but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men(S) as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.

Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.(T) But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents,(U) for this is pleasing to God.(V) The widow who is really in need(W) and left all alone puts her hope in God(X) and continues night and day to pray(Y) and to ask God for help. But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.(Z) Give the people these instructions,(AA) so that no one may be open to blame. Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied(AB) the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
