Guidelines for Leaders in the Church
3 This is a statement that can be trusted: If anyone sets his heart on being a bishop,[a] he desires something excellent. 2 A bishop must have a good reputation. He must have only one wife, be sober, use good judgment, be respectable, be hospitable, and be able to teach. 3 He must not drink excessively or be a violent person, but he must be gentle. He must not be quarrelsome or love money. 4 He must manage his own family well. His children should respectfully obey him. 5 (If a man doesn’t know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) 6 He must not be a new Christian, or he might become arrogant like the devil and be condemned. 7 People who are not Christians must speak well of him, or he might become the victim of disgraceful insults that the devil sets as traps for him.
8 Deacons[b] must also be of good character. They must not be two-faced or addicted to alcohol. They must not use shameful ways to make money. 9 They must have clear consciences about possessing the mystery of the Christian faith. 10 First, a person must be evaluated. Then, if he has a good reputation, he may become a deacon.
11 Their wives must also be of good character. They must not be gossips, but they must control their tempers and be trustworthy in every way.
12 A deacon must have only one wife. Deacons must manage their children and their families well. 13 Those deacons who serve well gain an excellent reputation and will have confidence as a result of their faith in Christ Yeshua.
14 I hope to visit you soon. However, I’m writing this to you 15 in case I’m delayed. I want you to know how people who are members of God’s family must live. God’s family is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
16 The mystery that gives us our reverence for God is acknowledged to be great:
He[c] appeared in his human nature,
was approved by the Spirit,
was seen by angels,
was announced throughout the nations,
was believed in the world,
and was taken to heaven in glory.

3 This is a faithful saying: someone who seeks to be an overseer[a] desires a good work. 2 The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching; 3 not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4 one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence; 5 (for how could someone who doesn’t know how to rule his own house take care of God’s assembly?) 6 not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have good testimony from those who are outside, to avoid falling into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8 Servants,[b] in the same way, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10 Let them also first be tested; then let them serve[c] if they are blameless. 11 Their wives in the same way must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, and faithful in all things. 12 Let servants[d] be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well[e] gain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
14 These things I write to you, hoping to come to you shortly, 15 but if I wait long, that you may know how men ought to behave themselves in God’s house, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 Without controversy, the mystery of godliness is great:
God[f] was revealed in the flesh,
justified in the spirit,
seen by angels,
preached among the nations,
believed on in the world,
and received up in glory.

3 Totoo ang pahayag na ito: Ang sinumang nagnanais na maging tagapangasiwa[a] sa iglesya ay naghahangad ng mabuting gawain. 2 Kaya(A) nga, ang isang tagapangasiwa ay kailangang walang kapintasan; isa lamang ang asawa,[b] matino ang pag-iisip, marunong magpigil sa sarili, kagalang-galang, bukás ang tahanan sa iba, at may kakayahang magturo. 3 Dapat hindi siya lasenggo, hindi marahas kundi mahinahon; hindi mahilig makipag-away at hindi maibigin sa salapi. 4 Dapat mahusay siyang mamahala sa sariling pamilya, iginagalang at sinusunod ng kanyang mga anak. 5 Sapagkat paano siyang makakapangasiwa nang maayos sa iglesya ng Diyos kung hindi niya mapamahalaan ang sarili niyang pamilya? 6 Hindi siya dapat isang baguhang mananampalataya; baka siya'y maging palalo at mahatulan na gaya ng diyablo. 7 Bukod dito, kailangang mabuti ang pagkakilala sa kanya ng mga hindi sumasampalataya upang hindi siya mapintasan at hindi mahulog sa bitag ng diyablo.

8 Ang mga tagapaglingkod[c] naman ay dapat ding maging kagalang-galang, tapat mangusap, hindi lasenggo at hindi sakim sa salapi. 9 Kailangang sila'y tapat sa pananampalataya na ating ipinapahayag, at may malinis na budhi. 10 Kailangang subukin muna sila, at kung mapatunayang sila'y karapat-dapat, saka sila gawing mga tagapaglingkod.
11 Gayundin naman, ang kanilang mga asawa[d] ay dapat maging kagalang-galang, hindi mapanirang-puri, mapagtimpi at tapat sa lahat ng mga bagay.
12 Ang mga tagapaglingkod sa iglesya ay dapat isa lamang ang asawa[e] at maayos mangasiwa sa kanilang mga anak at sambahayan. 13 Ang mga tagapaglingkod na tapat sa tungkulin ay nagkakamit ng paggalang ng mga tao at nagkakaroon ng malaking tiwala dahil sa pananampalataya kay Cristo Jesus.

14 Umaasa akong magkikita tayo sa lalong madaling panahon, ngunit isinulat ko ang mga ito 15 upang kung hindi man ako makarating agad ay malaman mo kung ano ang dapat na maging ugali ng mga tao sa sambahayan ng Diyos na buháy, sa iglesya na haligi at saligan ng katotohanan. 16 Hindi maikakaila na napakadakila ng hiwaga ng ating relihiyon:
Siya'y[f] nahayag sa anyong tao,
pinatunayang matuwid ng Espiritu,[g] at nakita ng mga anghel.
Ipinangaral sa mga bansa,
pinaniwalaan sa sanlibutan, at itinaas sa kaluwalhatian.

Elders in the Church
3 ·What I say is true [or This saying/word is trustworthy; 1:15; 4:9; 2 Tim. 2:11; Titus 3:8]: Anyone ·wanting [aspiring] to become an ·overseer [T bishop; C perhaps the same as elder; 3:6, 7; 5:17; Titus 1:5–6] desires a ·good [honorable; noble] ·work [role; position]. 2 An overseer must ·not give people a reason to criticize him [have a good reputation; be above reproach], and he must ·have only one wife [or be faithful to his wife]. He must be ·self-controlled [sober], ·wise [have good judgment], respected by others, ·ready to welcome guests [hospitable], and able to teach. 3 He must not drink too much wine or ·like to fight [be violent/a troublemaker], but rather be gentle and ·peaceable [not quarrelsome/contentious], not ·loving money [avaricious; greedy]. 4 He must ·be a good family leader [L manage/lead his own household well], having children ·who cooperate with full respect [who obey and respect him; or whom he controls with dignity]. 5 (If someone does not know how to ·lead [manage] his own ·family [household], how can that person take care of God’s church?) 6 But an elder must not be a ·new believer [recent convert], or he might ·be too proud of himself [become arrogant] and ·be judged guilty just as the devil was [or incur the same punishment as the devil; 1:20]. 7 An elder must also have ·the respect of [a good reputation among] ·people who are not in the church [L outsiders] so he will not ·be criticized by others [fall into disgrace; be caught in a scandal] ·and [or and in this way] ·caught [ensnared] in the devil’s trap.
Deacons in the Church
8 In the same way, deacons must be ·respected by others [dignified], not ·saying things they do not mean [insincere; two-faced; deceitful]. They must not drink too much wine or ·try to get rich by cheating others [be greedy for money/profit]. 9 With a clear conscience they must ·follow [hold on to] ·the secret of the faith that God made known to us [or God’s revealed truths; L the mystery of the faith; C a mystery being something previously unknown but now revealed by God; Eph. 1:9]. 10 Test them first. Then let them serve as deacons if you find ·nothing wrong in them [them blameless]. 11 In the same way, ·women [or women who are deacons; or deacon’s wives] must be ·respected by others [dignified]. They must not ·speak evil of others [be slanderers/gossips]. They must be ·self-controlled [sober] and ·trustworthy [honest; faithful] in everything. 12 Deacons must ·have only one wife [or be faithful to their wife] and be good ·leaders [managers] of their children and their own ·families [households]. 13 Those who serve well as deacons ·are making an honorable place [gain good standing] for themselves, and they will ·be very bold [or have greater confidence/assurance] in their faith in Christ Jesus.
The Secret of Our Life
14 Although I hope I can come to you ·soon [quickly], I am writing these things to you now. 15 Then, even if I am delayed, you will know ·how [L how it is necessary] to live in the ·family [household] of God, which is the ·church [assembly] of the living God, the ·support [pillar] and foundation of the truth. 16 ·Without doubt [or And we all agree], ·the secret of our life of worship [or the truth revealed in our faith/worship; L the mystery of godliness; v. 9] is great [C what follows may be from an early Christian hymn]:
He[a] ·was shown to us [appeared; was revealed] in ·a human body [T the flesh],
·proved right [vindicated] ·in spirit [or by the Spirit],
and seen by angels.
He was proclaimed ·to [among] the ·nations [Gentiles],
believed in ·by [or in; throughout] the world,
and taken up in glory.
