Therefore, I encourage most of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all mankind;

for kings, and for all who are in authority. So that we may lead a quiet and a peaceable life, in all godliness and honesty.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,

Who desires that all mankind should be saved and come to the acknowledgment of the Truth.

For there is one God - and one Mediator between God and man - Who is the man, Christ Jesus.

He gave Himself - a ransom for all - to be that testimony in due time.

To this I am ordained a preacher and an Apostle (I speak the truth in Christ, and do not lie), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Therefore, I desire that the men pray everywhere, lifting up pure hands without wrath or doubting;

also that the women clothe themselves in appropriate apparel, with discretion and modesty (not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly garments,

10 but as becomes women who profess the fear of God with good works).

11 Let the woman learn in silence, with all subjection.

12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.

14 And Adam was not deceived. But the woman, being deceived, was in transgression.

15 Nevertheless, through the bearing of children she shall be saved, if they continue in faith and love and holiness with modesty.

Pray for All Men

Therefore I [a]exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, (A)for kings and (B)all who are in [b]authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and [c]reverence. For this is (C)good and acceptable in the sight (D)of God our Savior, (E)who desires all men to be saved (F)and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (G)For there is one God and (H)one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, (I)who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, (J)for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth [d]in Christ and not lying—(K)a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Men and Women in the Church

I desire therefore that the men pray (L)everywhere, (M)lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; in like manner also, that the (N)women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and [e]moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 (O)but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. 12 And (P)I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

Christians should pray for all people

So then, this is what I want to ask you first. Please pray for all people. Ask God to supply what they need. Ask God to help them. Thank God for what he does for everyone. Pray in that way for kings and for all rulers and people who have authority. Pray for God to help them, so that we may live our lives without trouble or danger. Then we can live in a good way that respects God and other people. It is good that we should pray like that. It makes God, our Saviour, happy. He wants to save all people. He wants everyone to know his message about what is true.

There is only one God. There is also only one person who brings God and people together. That person is Christ Jesus, who became a man himself. He died as a sacrifice on behalf of all people, to pay the debt of their sins. He died at the proper time for God to show his purpose clearly. God chose me as his apostle, to tell this same message to people. I am telling you what is true. I am not telling lies! Yes, he sent me to teach his true message to the Gentiles, so that they would believe in him.

So then, in every place where you meet together, I want the men to pray. The men who lift up their hands and pray must be those who live good lives. They must not be people who are angry or who quarrel with others.

Christian women should also live in a good way

I also want the women to dress themselves properly in a way that is right. They should not bring shame on themselves. What makes a woman beautiful? It is not the special way that she prepares her hair. It is not the gold things or jewels that she wears. It is not her expensive clothes. 10 Christian women should not dress themselves like that. Instead, their lives should show that they do good things. They say that they want to please God, so that is the proper way for them to live.

11 When you meet together, a woman should learn quietly. She must respect the leaders who teach in the church. 12 I do not let a woman teach men. I do not let a woman have authority over men. Instead, she should listen quietly. 13 I say this because God made Adam first.[a] Then he made Eve. 14 It was Eve, not Adam, who believed the lies that Satan told her. Because she believed Satan completely, she did what God had said was wrong.[b]

15 But even as women give birth to children, God will save them. They must continue to trust God and to love other people. They must live in a way that shows they belong to God. They must think carefully about how they live. Then God will save them.

Instructions concerning Prayer

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For

there is one God;
    there is also one mediator between God and humankind,
Christ Jesus, himself human,
    who gave himself a ransom for all

—this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth,[a] I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

I desire, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument; also that the women should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing, not with their hair braided, or with gold, pearls, or expensive clothes, 10 but with good works, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God. 11 Let a woman[b] learn in silence with full submission. 12 I permit no woman[c] to teach or to have authority over a man;[d] she is to keep silent. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing, provided they continue in faith and love and holiness, with modesty.
