Pablo, apóstol de Cristo Jesús, enviado por mandato de Dios nuestro Salvador y de Cristo Jesús, nuestra esperanza, saluda a Timoteo, verdadero hijo en la fe. Que Dios nuestro Padre y Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor derramen su gracia, su misericordia y su paz sobre ti.

Advertencia contra las falsas enseñanzas

Como ya te rogué al irme a la región de Macedonia, quédate en Éfeso, para ordenar a ciertas personas que no enseñen ideas falsas ni presten atención a cuentos y cuestiones interminables acerca de los antepasados. Estas cosas llevan solamente a la discusión y no ayudan a conocer el designio de Dios, que se vive en la fe.

El propósito de esa orden es que nos amemos unos a otros con el amor que proviene de un corazón limpio, de una buena conciencia y de una fe sincera. Algunos se han desviado de esto y se han perdido en inútiles discusiones. Quieren ser maestros de la ley de Dios, cuando no entienden lo que ellos mismos dicen ni lo que enseñan con tanta seguridad.

Sabemos que la ley es buena, si se usa de ella conforme al propósito que tiene. Hay que recordar que ninguna ley se da para quienes hacen lo bueno. La ley tiene en cuenta a los rebeldes y desobedientes, a los malvados y pecadores, a los que no respetan a Dios ni a la religión, a los que matan a su padre o a su madre, a todos los asesinos, 10 a los que cometen inmoralidades sexuales, a los homosexuales, a los traficantes de esclavos, a los mentirosos y a los que juran en falso; es decir, a los que hacen cosas que van en contra de la sana enseñanza. 11 Y esto es lo que enseña el glorioso evangelio que el Dios bienaventurado me ha encargado.

La misericordia de Dios con Pablo

12 Doy gracias a aquel que me ha dado fuerzas, a Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor, porque me ha considerado fiel y me ha puesto a su servicio, 13 a pesar de que yo antes decía cosas ofensivas contra él, lo perseguía y lo insultaba. Pero Dios tuvo misericordia de mí, porque yo todavía no era creyente y no sabía lo que hacía. 14 Y nuestro Señor derramó abundantemente su gracia sobre mí, y me dio la fe y el amor que podemos tener gracias a Cristo Jesús.

15 Esto es muy cierto, y todos deben creerlo: que Cristo Jesús vino al mundo para salvar a los pecadores, de los cuales yo soy el primero. 16 Pero Dios tuvo misericordia de mí, para que Jesucristo mostrara en mí toda su paciencia. Así yo vine a ser ejemplo de los que habían de creer en él para obtener la vida eterna. 17 ¡Honor y gloria para siempre al Rey eterno, al inmortal, invisible y único Dios! Amén.

18-19 Timoteo, hijo mío, te doy este encargo para que pelees la buena batalla con fe y buena conciencia, conforme a las palabras proféticas pronunciadas anteriormente sobre ti. Algunos, por no haber hecho caso a su conciencia, han fracasado en su fe. 20 Esto les ha pasado a Himeneo y Alejandro, a quienes he entregado a Satanás para que aprendan a no decir cosas ofensivas contra Dios.

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.(F)

Timothy Charged to Oppose False Teachers

As I urged you when I went into Macedonia,(G) stay there in Ephesus(H) so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines(I) any longer or to devote themselves to myths(J) and endless genealogies.(K) Such things promote controversial speculations(L) rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart(M) and a good conscience(N) and a sincere faith.(O) Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers(P) of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.(Q)

We know that the law is good(R) if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous(S) but for lawbreakers and rebels,(T) the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine(U) 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.(V)

The Lord’s Grace to Paul

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength,(W) that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service.(X) 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor(Y) and a violent man, I was shown mercy(Z) because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.(AA) 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly,(AB) along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.(AC)

15 Here is a trustworthy saying(AD) that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners(AE)—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy(AF) so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience(AG) as an example for those who would believe(AH) in him and receive eternal life.(AI) 17 Now to the King(AJ) eternal, immortal,(AK) invisible,(AL) the only God,(AM) be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.(AN)

The Charge to Timothy Renewed

18 Timothy, my son,(AO) I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you,(AP) so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,(AQ) 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience,(AR) which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.(AS) 20 Among them are Hymenaeus(AT) and Alexander,(AU) whom I have handed over to Satan(AV) to be taught not to blaspheme.

Paul, an apostle (special messenger) of Christ Jesus by appointment and command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus (the Messiah), our Hope,

To Timothy, my true son in the faith: Grace (spiritual blessing and favor), mercy, and [heart] peace [be yours] from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

As I urged you when I was on my way to Macedonia, stay on where you are at Ephesus in order that you may warn and admonish and charge certain individuals not to teach any different doctrine,

Nor to give importance to or occupy themselves with legends (fables, myths) and endless genealogies, which foster and promote useless speculations and questionings rather than acceptance in faith of God’s administration and the divine training that is in faith ([a]in that leaning of the entire human personality on God in absolute trust and confidence)—

Whereas the object and purpose of our instruction and charge is love, which springs from a pure heart and a good (clear) conscience and sincere (unfeigned) faith.

But certain individuals have missed the mark on this very matter [and] have wandered away into vain arguments and discussions and purposeless talk.

They are ambitious to be doctors of the Law (teachers of the Mosaic ritual), but they have no understanding either of the words and terms they use or of the subjects about which they make [such] dogmatic assertions.

Now we recognize and know that the Law is good if anyone uses it lawfully [for the purpose for which it was designed],

Knowing and understanding this: that the Law is not enacted for the righteous (the upright and just, who are in right standing with God), but for the lawless and unruly, for the ungodly and sinful, for the irreverent and profane, for those who strike and beat and [even] murder fathers and strike and beat and [even] murder mothers, for manslayers,

10 [For] impure and immoral persons, those who abuse themselves with men, kidnapers, liars, perjurers—and whatever else is opposed to wholesome teaching and sound doctrine

11 As laid down by the glorious Gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.

12 I give thanks to Him Who has granted me [the needed] strength and made me able [for this], Christ Jesus our Lord, because He has judged and counted me faithful and trustworthy, appointing me to [this stewardship of] the ministry.

13 Though I formerly blasphemed and persecuted and was shamefully and outrageously and aggressively insulting [to Him], nevertheless, I obtained mercy because I had acted out of ignorance in unbelief.

14 And the grace (unmerited favor and blessing) of our Lord [actually] flowed out superabundantly and beyond measure for me, accompanied by faith and love that are [to be realized] in Christ Jesus.

15 The saying is sure and true and worthy of full and universal acceptance, that Christ Jesus (the Messiah) came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am foremost.

16 But I obtained mercy for the reason that in me, as the foremost [of sinners], Jesus Christ might show forth and display all His perfect long-suffering and patience for an example to [encourage] those who would thereafter believe on Him for [the gaining of] eternal life.

17 Now to the King of eternity, incorruptible and immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever (to the ages of ages). Amen (so be it).

18 This charge and admonition I commit in trust to you, Timothy, my son, [b]in accordance with prophetic intimations which I formerly received concerning you, so that inspired and aided by them you may wage the good warfare,

19 Holding fast to faith ([c]that leaning of the entire human personality on God in absolute trust and confidence) and having a good (clear) conscience. By rejecting and thrusting from them [their conscience], some individuals have made shipwreck of their faith.

20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan in order that they may be disciplined [by punishment and learn] not to blaspheme.
