5 Ne réprimande pas rudement le vieillard, mais exhorte-le comme un père; exhorte les jeunes gens comme des frères, 2 les femmes âgées comme des mères, celles qui sont jeunes comme des sœurs, en toute pureté.
3 Honore les veuves qui sont véritablement veuves. 4 Si une veuve a des enfants ou des petits-enfants, qu’ils apprennent avant tout à exercer la piété envers leur propre famille, et à rendre à leurs parents ce qu’ils ont reçu d’eux; car cela est agréable à Dieu. 5 Celle qui est véritablement veuve, et qui est demeurée toute seule, met son espérance en Dieu et persévère nuit et jour dans les supplications et les prières. 6 Mais celle qui vit dans les plaisirs est morte, quoique vivante. 7 Déclare-leur ces choses, afin qu’elles soient irréprochables. 8 Si quelqu’un n’a pas soin des siens, et principalement de ceux de sa famille, il a renié la foi, et il est pire qu’un infidèle. 9 Qu’une veuve, pour être inscrite sur le rôle, n’ait pas moins de soixante ans, qu’elle ait été femme d’un seul mari, 10 qu’elle soit appliquée à toute bonne œuvre[a], ayant élevé des enfants, exercé l’hospitalité, lavé les pieds des saints, secouru les malheureux, pratiqué toute espèce de bonnes œuvres. 11 Mais refuse les jeunes veuves; car, lorsque la volupté les détache de Christ, elles veulent se marier, 12 et se rendent coupables en ce qu’elles violent leur premier engagement. 13 Avec cela, étant oisives, elles apprennent à aller de maison en maison; et non seulement elles sont oisives, mais encore causeuses et intrigantes, disant ce qu’il ne faut pas dire. 14 Je veux donc que les jeunes se marient, qu’elles aient des enfants, qu’elles dirigent leur maison, qu’elles ne donnent à l’adversaire aucune occasion de médire; 15 car déjà quelques-unes se sont détournées pour suivre Satan. 16 Si quelque fidèle, homme ou femme, a des veuves, qu’il les assiste, et que l’Eglise n’en soit point chargée, afin qu’elle puisse assister celles qui sont véritablement veuves.
17 Que les anciens qui dirigent bien soient jugés dignes d’un double honneur, surtout ceux qui travaillent à la prédication et à l’enseignement. 18 Car l’Ecriture dit: Tu ne muselleras point le bœuf quand il foule le grain[b]. Et l’ouvrier mérite son salaire[c]. 19 Ne reçois point d’accusation contre un ancien, si ce n’est sur la déposition de deux ou de trois témoins[d]. 20 Ceux qui pèchent, reprends-les devant tous, afin que les autres aussi éprouvent de la crainte. 21 Je te conjure devant Dieu, devant Jésus-Christ, et devant les anges élus, d’observer ces choses sans prévention, et de ne rien faire par faveur. 22 N’impose les mains à personne avec précipitation, et ne participe pas aux péchés d’autrui; toi-même, conserve-toi pur. 23 Ne continue pas à ne boire que de l’eau; mais fais usage d’un peu de vin, à cause de ton estomac et de tes fréquentes indispositions. 24 Les péchés de certains hommes sont manifestes, même avant qu’on les juge, tandis que chez d’autres ils ne se découvrent que dans la suite. 25 De même, les bonnes œuvres sont manifestes, et celles qui ne le sont pas ne peuvent rester cachées.

Förmaningar till olika grupper i församlingen
5 Gå inte hårt fram mot en äldre man. När du förmanar honom, så tala som till en far. Förmana yngre män som bröder, 2 äldre kvinnor som mödrar och yngre kvinnor som systrar, i all renhet. 3 Hedra dem som verkligen är änkor. 4 Men om en änka har barn eller barnbarn, skall dessa först och främst lära sig att visa vördnad för sin egen familj och så ge tillbaka vad de är skyldiga sina föräldrar. Det är så Gud vill ha det. 5 Den som verkligen är änka och står ensam sätter sitt hopp till Gud och håller ut i bön och åkallan natt och dag. 6 Men den som för ett utsvävande liv är levande död. 7 Och allt detta skall du inskärpa, så att ingen kan anklaga dem. 8 Men om någon inte tar hand om sina närmaste, särskilt då sin egen familj, så har han förnekat tron och är värre än den som inte tror.
9 Till 'församlingsänka' skall den utses som är minst sextio år och har varit en enda mans kvinna. 10 Hon skall vara känd för att ha gjort mycket gott: uppfostrat barn, visat gästfrihet, tvättat de heligas fötter, hjälpt nödlidande och sökt varje tillfälle att göra gott.
11 Yngre änkor skall du däremot avvisa. Ty när de drivs av begär och sätter sig upp mot Kristus, vill de bara gifta sig 12 och drar domen över sig, eftersom de har förnekat sin första tro. 13 På samma gång lär de sig att vara lata, när de går omkring i husen. Och inte nog med det, de lär sig också att vara skvalleraktiga och nyfikna och att prata om sådant som de borde tiga med. 14 Jag vill därför att unga änkor gifter sig, föder barn, sköter hemmet och inte ger motståndaren något tillfälle att tala illa om dem. 15 Somliga har redan vänt sig bort och följt Satan. 16 Om en troende kvinna har änkor hos sig, skall hon ta sig an dem och inte betunga församlingen, så att den kan sörja för dem som verkligen är änkor.
17 Sådana äldste som sköter sin uppgift väl skall ni anse värda dubbel heder,[a] särskilt dem som arbetar med predikan och undervisning. 18 Ty Skriften säger: Du skall inte binda för munnen på oxen som tröskar [b] och: Arbetaren är värd sin lön. 19 Ta inte upp en anklagelse mot någon av de äldste, om det inte finns två eller tre vittnen. 20 Dem som syndar inför alla skall du tillrättavisa inför alla, så att även de andra tar varning.
21 Jag uppmanar dig allvarligt inför Gud och Kristus Jesus och de utvalda änglarna att iaktta detta utan någon förutfattad mening och inte handla partiskt. 22 Ha inte för bråttom med att lägga händerna på någon och gör dig inte delaktig i andras synder. Håll dig själv ren. 23 Drick inte längre bara vatten utan använd lite vin för din mage, eftersom du är svag så ofta. 24 Vissa människors synder ligger i öppen dag och får sin dom i förväg. Andras synder kommer först senare i dagen. 25 På samma sätt ligger de goda gärningarna i öppen dag, och de som inte gör det kan ändå inte förbli gömda.

Widows, Elders and Slaves
5 Do not rebuke an older man(A) harshly,(B) but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men(C) as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.
3 Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.(D) 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents,(E) for this is pleasing to God.(F) 5 The widow who is really in need(G) and left all alone puts her hope in God(H) and continues night and day to pray(I) and to ask God for help. 6 But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.(J) 7 Give the people these instructions,(K) so that no one may be open to blame. 8 Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied(L) the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, 10 and is well known for her good deeds,(M) such as bringing up children, showing hospitality,(N) washing the feet(O) of the Lord’s people, helping those in trouble(P) and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.
11 As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. 12 Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. 13 Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies(Q) who talk nonsense,(R) saying things they ought not to. 14 So I counsel younger widows to marry,(S) to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander.(T) 15 Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan.(U)
16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her care, she should continue to help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.(V)
17 The elders(W) who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor,(X) especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,”[a](Y) and “The worker deserves his wages.”[b](Z) 19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder(AA) unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.(AB) 20 But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove(AC) before everyone, so that the others may take warning.(AD) 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus(AE) and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.
22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands,(AF) and do not share in the sins of others.(AG) Keep yourself pure.(AH)
23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine(AI) because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.

4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.
7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.
8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man.
10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.
11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;
12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.
16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.
17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
18 For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.
20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.
21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.
22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.
23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.
24 Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.
25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.
