La prière pour tous les hommes
2 J’exhorte donc, avant toutes choses, à faire des prières, des supplications, des requêtes, des actions de grâces, pour tous les hommes, 2 pour les rois et pour tous ceux qui sont élevés en dignité, afin que nous menions une vie paisible et tranquille, en toute piété et honnêteté. 3 Cela est bon et agréable devant Dieu notre Sauveur, 4 qui veut que tous les hommes soient sauvés et parviennent à la connaissance de la vérité. 5 Car il y a un seul Dieu, et aussi un seul médiateur entre Dieu et les hommes, Jésus-Christ homme, 6 qui s’est donné lui-même en rançon pour tous. C’est là le témoignage rendu en son propre temps, 7 et pour lequel j’ai été établi prédicateur et apôtre – je dis la vérité, je ne mens pas – chargé d’instruire les païens dans la foi et la vérité.
8 Je veux donc que les hommes prient en tout lieu, en élevant des mains pures, sans colère ni mauvaises pensées.
L’attitude des femmes dans l’Eglise
9 Je veux aussi que les femmes, vêtues d’une manière décente, avec pudeur et modestie, ne se parent ni de tresses, ni d’or, ni de perles, ni d’habits somptueux, 10 mais qu’elles se parent de bonnes œuvres, comme il convient à des femmes qui font profession de servir Dieu. 11 Que la femme écoute l’instruction en silence, avec une entière soumission. 12 Je ne permets pas à la femme d’enseigner, ni de prendre de l’autorité sur l’homme; mais elle doit demeurer dans le silence. 13 Car Adam a été formé le premier, Eve ensuite; 14 Adam n’a pas été séduit, mais la femme, séduite, s’est rendue coupable[a] de transgression. 15 Elle sera néanmoins sauvée en devenant mère, si elle persévère avec modestie dans la foi, dans l’amour, et dans la sainteté.

Men and Women in the Church
8 I desire therefore that the men pray (L)everywhere, (M)lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; 9 in like manner also, that the (N)women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and [e]moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 (O)but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. 12 And (P)I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

Verschillende adviezen over het leven van de gelovigen
2 Ik wil je vooral aanmoedigen om voor alle mensen te smeken, te bidden en te danken. 2 Ook voor koningen en alle mensen in de regering. Doe dat, zodat we in rust en vrede God zullen kunnen dienen op de manier die Hij wil. 3 God wil dat graag. Want Hij is onze Redder. 4 En Hij wil dat alle mensen zullen worden gered en naar zijn waarheid zullen luisteren. 5 Want er is maar één God en er is ook maar één persoon die voor de mensen opkomt bij God: de mens Jezus Christus. 6 Hij heeft Zichzelf gegeven als losprijs voor alle mensen. God heeft dat aan de mensen bekend gemaakt op het moment dat Híj had bepaald. 7 En ik heb de taak gekregen die boodschap aan de mensen te brengen. Dat is de waarheid, en ik lieg niet! Mijn taak is het om de niet-Joodse mensen het geloof en de waarheid te leren.
8 Als de mannen hun handen naar God opsteken om te bidden, wil ik dat ze zullen bidden zonder boosheid of ruzie. Dus dat ze bij het bidden heilige handen naar God opsteken.
9 Ook wil ik dat de vrouwen zich fatsoenlijk kleden, keurig en bescheiden. Ze moeten niet willen opvallen door ingewikkelde kapsels, veel sieraden en mooie kleren. 10 Het is beter als ze mooi en aantrekkelijk zijn door goed te zijn voor anderen, zoals dat past bij vrouwen die zeggen dat ze God dienen. 11 Een vrouw moet rustig en gehoorzaam naar het onderwijs over het geloof luisteren.[a] 12 Maar ik vind het niet goed dat de vrouwen het beter willen weten dan de mannen en aan de mannen leiding willen geven.[b] Ze moeten zich rustig houden. 13 Want eerst is Adam door God gemaakt, en daarna Eva.[c] 14 Adam heeft zich niet door de slang laten verleiden, 15 maar de vrouw heeft zich laten verleiden en is daardoor ongehoorzaam geworden aan God. Maar God zal de vrouwen redden bij het krijgen van kinderen, als ze vasthouden aan het geloof en de liefde, een heilig leven leiden en bescheiden zijn.[d]

- 1 Timotheüs 2:11 In die tijd mochten de vrouwen over het algemeen niet leren. Vaak konden ze niet eens lezen. Paulus is niet tegen vrouwen, maar alleen tegen een verkeerde houding van de vrouwen. Maar hij wil wel dat ze onderwijs krijgen over het geloof. En dat is juist een verbetering in een tijd dat men onderwijs voor vrouwen niet nodig vond.
- 1 Timotheüs 2:12 In Efeze waren de vrouwen erg overheersend. Lees de inleiding bij de brief aan de gemeente in Efeze.
- 1 Timotheüs 2:13 Daarom is de man het hoofd van de vrouw, en niet andersom. Het hoofd geeft de leiding.
- 1 Timotheüs 2:15 Toen Adam en Eva ongehoorzaam waren geworden aan God, werd de vrouw vevloekt met moeite en pijn tijdens het krijgen van kinderen. Lees Genesis 3:16-18. Nu zegt Paulus dat de vrouwen tijdens die moeite en pijn hulp (redding) mogen verwachten door hun geloof in Jezus.
