Cómo comportarse con los diversos miembros de la comunidad
5 No trates con dureza al anciano; al contrario, aconséjalo como si fuera tu padre; y trata a los jóvenes como si fueran tus hermanos. 2 A las ancianas trátalas como a tu propia madre; y a las jóvenes, como si fueran tus hermanas, con toda pureza.
3 Ayuda a las viudas que no tengan a quien recurrir. 4 Pero si una viuda tiene hijos o nietos, ellos son quienes primero deben aprender a cumplir sus obligaciones con los de su propia familia y a corresponder al amor de sus padres, porque esto agrada a Dios. 5 La verdadera viuda, la que se ha quedado sola, pone su esperanza en Dios y no deja de rogar, orando día y noche. 6 Pero la viuda que se entrega al placer, está muerta en vida. 7 Mándales también estas cosas, para que sean irreprensibles. 8 Pues quien no se preocupa de los suyos, y sobre todo de los de su propia familia, ha negado la fe y es peor que los que no creen.
9 En la lista de las viudas deben estar únicamente las que tengan más de sesenta años y no hayan tenido sino un solo esposo. 10 Deben ser conocidas por sus buenas acciones, por haber criado bien a sus hijos, por haber recibido bien a los que llegan a su casa, por haber lavado los pies a los del pueblo santo y haber ayudado a los que sufren. En fin, por haberse dedicado a hacer toda clase de obras buenas.
11 Pero no pongas en la lista a viudas de menos edad; porque cuando sus propios deseos las apartan de Cristo, quieren casarse de nuevo 12 y resultan culpables de haber faltado a su compromiso. 13 Además andan de casa en casa, y se vuelven perezosas; y no sólo perezosas, sino también chismosas, metiéndose en todo y diciendo cosas que no convienen. 14 Por eso quiero que las viudas jóvenes se casen, que tengan hijos, que sean amas de casa y que no den lugar a las críticas del enemigo. 15 Pues algunas viudas ya se han apartado y han seguido a Satanás.
16 Si alguna mujer creyente tiene viudas en su familia, debe ayudarlas, para que no sean una carga para la iglesia; así la iglesia podrá ayudar a las viudas que de veras no tengan a quien recurrir.
17 Los ancianos que gobiernan bien la iglesia deben ser doblemente apreciados, especialmente los que se dedican a predicar y enseñar. 18 Pues la Escritura dice: «No le pongas bozal al buey que trilla.» Y también: «El trabajador tiene derecho a su paga.»
19 No hagas caso de acusaciones contra un anciano, si no están apoyadas por dos o tres testigos.
20 A los que siguen pecando, debes reprenderlos delante de todos, para que los demás tengan temor.
21 Te encargo delante de Dios, de Jesucristo y de los ángeles escogidos, que sigas estas reglas sin hacer discriminaciones ni tener preferencias. 22 No impongas las manos a nadie sin haberlo pensado bien, para no hacerte cómplice de los pecados de otros. Consérvate limpio de todo mal.
23 Puesto que a menudo estás enfermo del estómago, no bebas agua sola, sino bebe también un poco de vino.
24 Los pecados de algunos se ven claramente antes del juicio, pero en otros casos sólo se ven después. 25 Del mismo modo, las obras buenas se ven claramente; y las que no son buenas no podrán quedar siempre escondidas.

5 No reprendas al anciano, sino exhórtale como a padre; a los más jóvenes, como a hermanos; 2 a las ancianas, como a madres; a las jovencitas, como a hermanas, con toda pureza.
3 Honra a las viudas que en verdad lo son. 4 Pero si alguna viuda tiene hijos, o nietos, aprendan estos primero a ser piadosos para con su propia familia, y a recompensar a sus padres; porque esto es lo bueno y agradable delante de Dios. 5 Mas la que en verdad es viuda y ha quedado sola, espera en Dios, y es diligente en súplicas y oraciones noche y día. 6 Pero la que se entrega a los placeres, viviendo está muerta. 7 Manda también estas cosas, para que sean irreprensibles; 8 porque si alguno no provee para los suyos, y mayormente para los de su casa, ha negado la fe, y es peor que un incrédulo.
9 Sea puesta en la lista solo la viuda no menor de sesenta años, que haya sido esposa de un solo marido, 10 que tenga testimonio de buenas obras; si ha criado hijos; si ha practicado la hospitalidad; si ha lavado los pies de los santos; si ha socorrido a los afligidos; si ha practicado toda buena obra. 11 Pero viudas más jóvenes no admitas; porque cuando, impulsadas por sus deseos, se rebelan contra Cristo, quieren casarse, 12 incurriendo así en condenación, por haber quebrantado su primera fe. 13 Y también aprenden a ser ociosas, andando de casa en casa; y no solamente ociosas, sino también chismosas y entremetidas, hablando lo que no debieran. 14 Quiero, pues, que las viudas jóvenes se casen, críen hijos, gobiernen su casa; que no den al adversario ninguna ocasión de maledicencia. 15 Porque ya algunas se han apartado en pos de Satanás. 16 Si algún creyente o alguna creyente tiene viudas, que las mantenga, y no sea gravada la iglesia, a fin de que haya lo suficiente para las que en verdad son viudas.
17 Los ancianos que gobiernan bien, sean tenidos por dignos de doble honor, mayormente los que trabajan en predicar y enseñar. 18 Pues la Escritura dice: No pondrás bozal al buey que trilla;(A) y: Digno es el obrero de su salario.(B) 19 Contra un anciano no admitas acusación sino con dos o tres testigos.(C) 20 A los que persisten en pecar, repréndelos delante de todos, para que los demás también teman. 21 Te encarezco delante de Dios y del Señor Jesucristo, y de sus ángeles escogidos, que guardes estas cosas sin prejuicios, no haciendo nada con parcialidad. 22 No impongas con ligereza las manos a ninguno, ni participes en pecados ajenos. Consérvate puro.
23 Ya no bebas agua, sino usa de un poco de vino por causa de tu estómago y de tus frecuentes enfermedades.
24 Los pecados de algunos hombres se hacen patentes antes que ellos vengan a juicio, mas a otros se les descubren después. 25 Asimismo se hacen manifiestas las buenas obras; y las que son de otra manera, no pueden permanecer ocultas.

Duties toward Believers
5 Do not rebuke an older man but exhort him as you would a father; treat younger men like brothers, 2 older women like mothers, younger women like sisters, in all purity.
3 Honor widows who are real widows.[a] 4 If a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn their religious duty to their own family and make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God. 5 She who is a real widow, and is left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day; 6 whereas she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives. 7 Command this, so that they may be without reproach. 8 If any one does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own family, he has disowned the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been the wife of one husband; 10 and she must be well attested for her good deeds, as one who has brought up children, shown hospitality, washed the feet of the saints, relieved the afflicted, and devoted herself to doing good in every way. 11 But refuse to enrol younger widows; for when they grow wanton against Christ they desire to marry, 12 and so they incur condemnation for having violated their first pledge.[b] 13 Besides that, they learn to be idlers, gadding about from house to house, and not only idlers but gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not. 14 So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, rule their households, and give the enemy no occasion to revile us. 15 For some have already strayed after Satan. 16 If any believing woman[c] has relatives who are widows, let her assist them; let the church not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are real widows.
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching; 18 for the scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.” 19 Never admit any charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 20 As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear. 21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without favor, doing nothing from partiality. 22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor participate in another man’s sins; keep yourself pure.
23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
24 The sins of some men are conspicuous, pointing to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. 25 So also good deeds are conspicuous; and even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden.

- 5.12 Paul had no objection to widows marrying again; cf. 1 Cor 7.8-9. But the widows here had clearly made some sort of vow or promise to serve the church in singleness. Paul recommended that younger widows should marry again (verse 14).

5 Do not rebuke an older man(A) harshly,(B) but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men(C) as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.
3 Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.(D) 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents,(E) for this is pleasing to God.(F) 5 The widow who is really in need(G) and left all alone puts her hope in God(H) and continues night and day to pray(I) and to ask God for help. 6 But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.(J) 7 Give the people these instructions,(K) so that no one may be open to blame. 8 Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied(L) the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, 10 and is well known for her good deeds,(M) such as bringing up children, showing hospitality,(N) washing the feet(O) of the Lord’s people, helping those in trouble(P) and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.
11 As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. 12 Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. 13 Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies(Q) who talk nonsense,(R) saying things they ought not to. 14 So I counsel younger widows to marry,(S) to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander.(T) 15 Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan.(U)
16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her care, she should continue to help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.(V)
17 The elders(W) who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor,(X) especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,”[a](Y) and “The worker deserves his wages.”[b](Z) 19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder(AA) unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.(AB) 20 But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove(AC) before everyone, so that the others may take warning.(AD) 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus(AE) and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.
22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands,(AF) and do not share in the sins of others.(AG) Keep yourself pure.(AH)
23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine(AI) because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.
