Requisitos de los obispos
3 Ésta es palabra fiel: Si alguno anhela ser obispo, desea una buena obra. 2 Pero es necesario que el obispo sea irreprensible y que tenga una sola esposa; que sea sobrio, prudente, decoroso, hospedador, apto para enseñar; 3 no afecto al vino, ni pendenciero, ni codicioso de ganancias deshonestas, sino amable, apacible, no avaro; 4 que gobierne bien su casa, que tenga a sus hijos en sujeción y con toda honestidad 5 (pues el que no sabe gobernar su propia casa, ¿cómo podrá cuidar de la iglesia de Dios?); 6 no debe ser un neófito, no sea que se envanezca y caiga en la condenación del diablo. 7 También es necesario que tenga buen testimonio de los de afuera, para que no caiga en descrédito y en los lazos del diablo.(A)
Requisitos de los diáconos
8 De igual manera, los diáconos deben ser honestos y sin doblez, no demasiado afectos al vino ni codiciosos de ganancias deshonestas; 9 y deben guardar el misterio de la fe con limpia conciencia. 10 Además, éstos primero deben ser puestos a prueba y, si son irreprensibles, entonces podrán ejercer el diaconado. 11 Las mujeres, por su parte, deben ser honestas, y no calumniadoras, sino sobrias y fieles en todo. 12 Los diáconos deben tener una sola esposa, y gobernar bien sus hijos y sus casas, 13 pues los que ejercen bien el diaconado ganan para sí mismos un grado honroso y mucha confianza en la fe que es en Cristo Jesús.
El misterio de la piedad
14 Aunque tengo la esperanza de ir pronto a visitarte, te escribo esto 15 para que, si me tardo, sepas cómo conducirte en la casa de Dios, que es la iglesia del Dios viviente, columna y baluarte de la verdad. 16 Indiscutiblemente, el misterio de la piedad es grande:
Dios fue manifestado en carne,
Justificado en el Espíritu,
Visto de los ángeles,
Predicado a las naciones,
Creído en el mundo,
Recibido arriba en gloria.

Los líderes de la iglesia
3 Si alguien desea dirigir una iglesia, realmente desea un buen trabajo. 2 Pero debe ser alguien a quien no se le pueda acusar de nada malo. Debe tener una sola esposa, controlar todos sus deseos, y pensar dos veces lo que va a hacer. Debe comportarse correctamente, recibir con gusto en su hogar a los visitantes, y saber enseñar. 3 No debe ser borracho ni violento, ni buscar pelea. Al contrario, debe ser amable y tranquilo, y no estar preocupado sólo por el dinero.
4 Además, debe gobernar bien a su propia familia y educar a sus hijos, para que sean obedientes y respetuosos. 5 Porque si no puede gobernar a su propia familia, tampoco podrá gobernar a la iglesia de Dios. 6 Y no debe ser alguien con poco tiempo de haber creído en Jesucristo, pues puede volverse orgulloso, y entonces recibirá el mismo castigo que Satanás. 7 Por último, debe contar con el respeto de la gente que no cree en Jesucristo, para que nunca pase vergüenza delante de ellos ni caiga en alguna trampa de Satanás.
Los diáconos de la iglesia
8 Los diáconos deben ser gente respetable; no deben mentir ni beber mucho vino, ni hacer trampa en los negocios. 9 Además, deben creer siempre en todo el mensaje de la buena noticia que Dios nos ha dado, y tener la conciencia tranquila. 10-12 Deben tener una sola esposa, y dirigir bien a sus hijos y a toda su familia.
Las mujeres[a] también deben ser respetables. No deben ser chismosas, sino más bien serias y fieles en todo.
Los que quieran ser diáconos serán puestos a prueba. Si no hay nada de qué acusarlos, y pasan la prueba, trabajarán en la iglesia. 13 Los que hagan bien su trabajo como diáconos tendrán buena fama, y se ganarán el respeto y la confianza de todos en la iglesia de Cristo.
La gran verdad
14 Espero visitarte pronto. Pero te escribo todo esto, 15 por si acaso no llego a tiempo. Así sabrás cómo debemos comportarnos los que pertenecemos a la iglesia, que es la familia del Dios vivo. La iglesia sostiene y defiende la verdad.
16 No hay duda de que es muy profunda la verdad de la religión cristiana:
Cristo vino al mundo como ser humano.
El Espíritu lo declaró inocente.
Los ángeles lo vieron.
Su mensaje se anunció
entre las naciones,
y el mundo creyó en él.
Fue llevado al cielo
y Dios lo colmó de honores.

Overseers and Deacons
3 (A)It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the (B)office of [a]overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. 2 [b](C)An overseer, then, must be above reproach, (D)the husband of one wife, (E)temperate, prudent, respectable, (F)hospitable, (G)able to teach, 3 (H)not addicted to wine [c]or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, (I)free from the love of money. 4 He must be one who (J)manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity 5 (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of (K)the church of God?), 6 and not a new convert, so that he will not become (L)conceited and fall into the (M)condemnation [d]incurred by the devil. 7 And he must (N)have a good reputation with (O)those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and (P)the snare of the devil.
8 (Q)Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not [e]double-tongued, [f](R)or addicted to much wine [g](S)or fond of sordid gain, 9 (T)but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 (U)These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach. 11 [h]Women must likewise be dignified, (V)not malicious gossips, but (W)temperate, faithful in all things. 12 (X)Deacons must be (Y)husbands of only one wife, and [i](Z)good managers of their children and their own households. 13 For those who have served well as deacons (AA)obtain for themselves a [j]high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons
3 Here is a trustworthy saying:(A) Whoever aspires to be an overseer(B) desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach,(C) faithful to his wife,(D) temperate,(E) self-controlled, respectable, hospitable,(F) able to teach,(G) 3 not given to drunkenness,(H) not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome,(I) not a lover of money.(J) 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[a] respect.(K) 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)(L) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited(M) and fall under the same judgment(N) as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,(O) so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.(P)
8 In the same way, deacons[b](Q) are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine,(R) and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.(S) 10 They must first be tested;(T) and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.
11 In the same way, the women[c] are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers(U) but temperate(V) and trustworthy in everything.
12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife(W) and must manage his children and his household well.(X) 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.
Reasons for Paul’s Instructions
14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church(Y) of the living God,(Z) the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 Beyond all question, the mystery(AA) from which true godliness(AB) springs is great:
