Cómo deben ser los que presiden
Si alguien aspira al cargo de presidir la comunidad, a un buen trabajo aspira. 2 Por eso, el que tiene este cargo ha de ser irreprensible. Debe ser esposo de una sola mujer y llevar una vida seria, juiciosa y respetable. Debe estar siempre dispuesto a hospedar gente en su casa; debe ser apto para enseñar; 3 no debe ser borracho ni amigo de peleas, sino bondadoso, pacífico y desinteresado en cuanto al dinero. 4 Debe saber gobernar bien su casa y hacer que sus hijos sean obedientes y de conducta digna; 5 porque si uno no sabe gobernar su propia casa, ¿cómo podrá cuidar de la iglesia de Dios? 6 Por lo tanto, el dirigente no debe ser un recién convertido, no sea que se llene de orgullo y caiga bajo la misma condenación en que cayó el diablo. 7 También debe ser respetado entre los no creyentes, para que no caiga en deshonra y en alguna trampa del diablo.
Cómo deben ser los diáconos
8 Asimismo, los diáconos deben ser hombres respetables, que nunca falten a su palabra ni sean dados a emborracharse ni a desear ganancias mal habidas. 9 Deben apegarse a la verdad revelada en la cual creemos, y vivir con conciencia limpia. 10 Primero deben pasar un período de prueba, y después, si no hay nada en contra de ellos, podrán servir como diáconos. 11 Igualmente, las mujeres deben ser respetables, no chismosas, serias y fieles en todo. 12 Un diácono debe ser esposo de una sola mujer, y saber gobernar bien a sus hijos y su propia casa. 13 Porque los diáconos que realizan bien su trabajo, se hacen dignos de un lugar de honor, y podrán gozar de gran tranquilidad gracias a su fe en Cristo Jesús.
La verdad revelada de nuestra religión
14 Espero ir pronto a verte; pero te escribo esto 15 para que, si me retraso, sepas cómo debe portarse uno en la familia de Dios, que es la iglesia del Dios viviente, la cual sostiene y defiende la verdad. 16 No hay duda de que la verdad revelada de nuestra religión es algo muy grande:
Cristo se manifestó en su condición de hombre,
triunfó en su condición de espíritu
y fue visto por los ángeles.
Fue anunciado a las naciones,

Elders in the Church
3 ·What I say is true [or This saying/word is trustworthy; 1:15; 4:9; 2 Tim. 2:11; Titus 3:8]: Anyone ·wanting [aspiring] to become an ·overseer [T bishop; C perhaps the same as elder; 3:6, 7; 5:17; Titus 1:5–6] desires a ·good [honorable; noble] ·work [role; position]. 2 An overseer must ·not give people a reason to criticize him [have a good reputation; be above reproach], and he must ·have only one wife [or be faithful to his wife]. He must be ·self-controlled [sober], ·wise [have good judgment], respected by others, ·ready to welcome guests [hospitable], and able to teach. 3 He must not drink too much wine or ·like to fight [be violent/a troublemaker], but rather be gentle and ·peaceable [not quarrelsome/contentious], not ·loving money [avaricious; greedy]. 4 He must ·be a good family leader [L manage/lead his own household well], having children ·who cooperate with full respect [who obey and respect him; or whom he controls with dignity]. 5 (If someone does not know how to ·lead [manage] his own ·family [household], how can that person take care of God’s church?) 6 But an elder must not be a ·new believer [recent convert], or he might ·be too proud of himself [become arrogant] and ·be judged guilty just as the devil was [or incur the same punishment as the devil; 1:20]. 7 An elder must also have ·the respect of [a good reputation among] ·people who are not in the church [L outsiders] so he will not ·be criticized by others [fall into disgrace; be caught in a scandal] ·and [or and in this way] ·caught [ensnared] in the devil’s trap.
Deacons in the Church
8 In the same way, deacons must be ·respected by others [dignified], not ·saying things they do not mean [insincere; two-faced; deceitful]. They must not drink too much wine or ·try to get rich by cheating others [be greedy for money/profit]. 9 With a clear conscience they must ·follow [hold on to] ·the secret of the faith that God made known to us [or God’s revealed truths; L the mystery of the faith; C a mystery being something previously unknown but now revealed by God; Eph. 1:9]. 10 Test them first. Then let them serve as deacons if you find ·nothing wrong in them [them blameless]. 11 In the same way, ·women [or women who are deacons; or deacon’s wives] must be ·respected by others [dignified]. They must not ·speak evil of others [be slanderers/gossips]. They must be ·self-controlled [sober] and ·trustworthy [honest; faithful] in everything. 12 Deacons must ·have only one wife [or be faithful to their wife] and be good ·leaders [managers] of their children and their own ·families [households]. 13 Those who serve well as deacons ·are making an honorable place [gain good standing] for themselves, and they will ·be very bold [or have greater confidence/assurance] in their faith in Christ Jesus.
The Secret of Our Life
14 Although I hope I can come to you ·soon [quickly], I am writing these things to you now. 15 Then, even if I am delayed, you will know ·how [L how it is necessary] to live in the ·family [household] of God, which is the ·church [assembly] of the living God, the ·support [pillar] and foundation of the truth. 16 ·Without doubt [or And we all agree], ·the secret of our life of worship [or the truth revealed in our faith/worship; L the mystery of godliness; v. 9] is great [C what follows may be from an early Christian hymn]:
He[a] ·was shown to us [appeared; was revealed] in ·a human body [T the flesh],
·proved right [vindicated] ·in spirit [or by the Spirit],
and seen by angels.
He was proclaimed ·to [among] the ·nations [Gentiles],
believed in ·by [or in; throughout] the world,
and taken up in glory.

Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons
3 Here is a trustworthy saying:(A) Whoever aspires to be an overseer(B) desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach,(C) faithful to his wife,(D) temperate,(E) self-controlled, respectable, hospitable,(F) able to teach,(G) 3 not given to drunkenness,(H) not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome,(I) not a lover of money.(J) 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[a] respect.(K) 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)(L) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited(M) and fall under the same judgment(N) as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,(O) so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.(P)
8 In the same way, deacons[b](Q) are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine,(R) and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.(S) 10 They must first be tested;(T) and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.
11 In the same way, the women[c] are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers(U) but temperate(V) and trustworthy in everything.
12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife(W) and must manage his children and his household well.(X) 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.
Reasons for Paul’s Instructions
14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church(Y) of the living God,(Z) the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 Beyond all question, the mystery(AA) from which true godliness(AB) springs is great:
