²⁵ In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.

The Lamp of the Body^(A)

³³ “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.^(B)

³ But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴ so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.^(A)

Prayer^(B)

⁵ “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing^(C) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. ⁶ But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,^(D) who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

⁷ He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,^(A) so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.^(B)

²² But the fruit^(A) of the Spirit is love,^(B) joy, peace,^(C) forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, ²³ gentleness and self-control.^(D) Against such things there is no law.^(E)

¹² “A man named Ananias came to see me.^(A) He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there.^(B)

Timothy Joins Paul and Silas

16 Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra,^(A) where a disciple named Timothy^(B) lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer^(C) but whose father was a Greek. ² The believers^(D) at Lystra and Iconium^(E) spoke well of him. ³ Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.^(F)

²² The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man,^(A) who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.”^(B)
