⁶ So, then, let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober,^(A)

A Call to Holy Living

¹³ Therefore prepare your minds for action;^[a] discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed.^(A)

⁴² Keep awake, therefore, for you do not know on what day^[a] your Lord is coming.^(A)

An Urgent Appeal

¹¹ Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is already the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers;^{(A) 12} the night is far gone; the day is near. Let us then throw off^[a] the works of darkness and put on the armor of light;^{(B) 13} let us walk decently as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in illicit sex and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy.^{(C) 14} Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.^(D)

⁴⁶ and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.”^[a](A)

⁸ Discipline yourselves; keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour.^(A)

¹⁵ (“See, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and is clothed,^[a] not going about naked and exposed to shame.”)^(A)

¹² training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly,^(A)

¹⁴ for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,

² Wake up and strengthen what remains and is on the point of death, for I have not found your works perfect in the sight of my God.
