3 So when we could stand it no longer,^(A) we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens.^(B)

¹⁵ Those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens^(A) and then left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.^(B)

⁵ For this reason, when I could stand it no longer,^(A) I sent to find out about your faith.^(B) I was afraid that in some way the tempter^(C) had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain.^(D)

Paul’s Longing to See the Thessalonians

¹⁷ But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought),^(A) out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.^(B)

¹³ I still had no peace of mind,^(A) because I did not find my brother Titus^(B) there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.^(C)

²² When the Lord could no longer endure^(A) your wicked actions and the detestable things you did, your land became a curse^(B) and a desolate waste^(C) without inhabitants, as it is today.^(D)

²⁹ Who is weak, and I do not feel weak?^(A) Who is led into sin,^(B) and I do not inwardly burn?

³⁰ If I must boast, I will boast^(C) of the things that show my weakness.^(D)
