2 Hermanos míos, ustedes mismos saben que nuestra visita a ustedes no fue en vano. 2 También saben que, a pesar de haber sufrido y de ser maltratados en Filipos,(A) Dios nos dio el valor necesario para anunciarles su evangelio, aun en medio de grandes peligros.(B) 3 Porque nuestra exhortación no se basa en el error ni en malas intenciones, ni tampoco tratamos de engañar a nadie, 4 sino que hablamos porque Dios nos aprobó y nos confió el evangelio. No buscamos agradar a los hombres, sino a Dios, que es quien examina nuestro corazón. 5 Como ustedes bien saben, nosotros nunca usamos palabras lisonjeras, ni hay en nosotros avaricia encubierta. Dios es nuestro testigo. 6 Tampoco hemos buscado recibir honores de ustedes, ni de otros ni de nadie, aun cuando como apóstoles de Cristo podríamos haberles pedido que nos ayudaran. 7 En vez de eso, los hemos tratado con ternura, con el mismo cuidado de una madre por sus hijos. 8 Tan grande es nuestro cariño por ustedes, que hubiéramos querido entregarles no sólo el evangelio de Dios sino también nuestra propia vida. ¡A tal grado hemos llegado a amarlos!

9 Hermanos, ustedes se acordarán de nuestros trabajos y fatigas, y de cómo noche y día nos dedicamos a predicarles el evangelio de Dios, sin ser una carga para nadie. 10 Ustedes son testigos, y Dios también, de que nos hemos comportado con ustedes los creyentes de manera santa, justa e intachable. 11 Ustedes saben, además, que los hemos exhortado y consolado, como lo hace un padre con sus hijos, 12 y les hemos recomendado vivir con dignidad ante Dios, que los llamó a su reino y gloria.

13 Por eso también nosotros siempre damos gracias a Dios de que, cuando ustedes recibieron la palabra de Dios que nosotros les predicamos, no la recibieron como mera palabra humana sino como lo que es, como la palabra de Dios, la cual actúa en ustedes los creyentes. 14 Porque ustedes, hermanos, llegaron a ser imitadores de las iglesias de Dios en Cristo Jesús que están en Judea, ya que de parte de sus compatriotas sufrieron(C) las mismas cosas que ellas padecieron de los judíos, 15 los cuales mataron al Señor Jesús y a sus propios profetas, y a nosotros nos expulsaron.(D) Ellos no agradan a Dios, se oponen a todo el mundo, 16 y a nosotros nos impiden predicar a los no judíos para que se salven. Con esto llegan al colmo de sus pecados, y se hacen acreedores a la ira más extrema.

Ausencia de Pablo de la iglesia

17 Pero nosotros, hermanos, aunque estuvimos separados de ustedes por algún tiempo (físicamente, pero no en el corazón), hicimos todo lo posible para ir a verlos. 18 Por lo tanto, quisimos ir a verlos, y yo mismo lo intenté varias veces, pero Satanás nos lo impidió. 19 Porque ¿cuál es nuestra esperanza o gozo delante de nuestro Señor Jesucristo? ¿De qué corona puedo vanagloriarme cuando él venga, si no es de ustedes? 20 Porque son ustedes el motivo de nuestro orgullo y de nuestro gozo.

2 Ustedes mismos, hermanos, saben que nuestra visita a ustedes no fue en vano. 2 Más bien, aunque, como ya saben, antes habíamos sido insultados y maltratados en Filipos, Dios nos ayudó a anunciarles a ustedes su evangelio, con todo valor y en medio de una fuerte lucha. 3 Porque no estábamos equivocados en lo que predicábamos, ni tampoco hablábamos con malas intenciones ni con el propósito de engañar a nadie. 4 Al contrario, Dios nos aprobó y nos encargó el evangelio, y así es como hablamos. No tratamos de agradar a la gente, sino a Dios, que examina nuestros corazones. 5 Como ustedes saben, nunca los hemos halagado con palabras bonitas, ni hemos usado pretextos para ganar dinero. Dios es testigo de esto. 6 Nunca hemos buscado honores de nadie: ni de ustedes ni de otros. 7 Aunque muy bien hubiéramos podido hacerles sentir el peso de nuestra autoridad como apóstoles de Cristo, nos hicimos como niños entre ustedes. Como una madre que cría y cuida a sus propios hijos, 8 así también les tenemos a ustedes tanto cariño que hubiéramos deseado darles, no sólo el evangelio de Dios, sino hasta nuestras propias vidas. ¡Tanto hemos llegado a quererlos! 9 Hermanos, ustedes se acuerdan de cómo trabajábamos y luchábamos para ganarnos la vida. Trabajábamos día y noche, a fin de no ser una carga para ninguno de ustedes mientras les anunciábamos el evangelio de Dios.

10 Ustedes son testigos, y Dios también, de que nos hemos portado de una manera santa, recta e irreprochable con ustedes los creyentes. 11-12 También saben que los hemos animado y consolado a cada uno de ustedes, como hace un padre con sus hijos. Les hemos encargado que se porten como deben hacerlo los que son de Dios, que los llama a tener parte en su propio reino y gloria.

13 Por esto, de nuestra parte, damos siempre gracias a Dios, pues cuando ustedes escucharon el mensaje de Dios que nosotros les predicamos, lo recibieron como mensaje de Dios y no como mensaje de hombres. Y en verdad es el mensaje de Dios, el cual produce sus resultados en ustedes los que creen. 14 Cuando ustedes, hermanos, sufrieron persecución a manos de sus paisanos, les pasó lo mismo que a las iglesias de Dios de los que pertenecen a Cristo Jesús en Judea, pues ellos también fueron perseguidos por sus paisanos los judíos. 15 Estos judíos mataron al Señor Jesús, como antes habían matado a los profetas, y nos echaron fuera a nosotros. No agradan a Dios, y están en contra de todos, 16 pues cuando queremos hablar a los que no son judíos, para que también se salven, no nos dejan hacerlo. De esta manera llenan siempre la medida de sus pecados. Pero para poner fin a eso, el terrible castigo de Dios ha venido sobre ellos.

Deseos de una nueva visita

17 Hermanos, cuando nos separamos de ustedes por algún tiempo, aunque no los veíamos, siempre los teníamos presentes en nuestro corazón y deseábamos mucho ir a verlos. 18 Intentamos ir; por lo menos yo, Pablo, quise hacerlo varias veces, pero Satanás nos lo impidió. 19 Pues, ¿quién es nuestra esperanza, nuestra alegría y nuestro motivo de orgullo delante de nuestro Señor Jesús, cuando él regrese? Si no lo son ustedes, ningún otro lo será. 20 Sí, ustedes son nuestra gloria y nuestra alegría.

Paul’s Conduct(A)

2 For you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you was not in vain. 2 But [a]even after we had suffered before and were spitefully treated at (B)Philippi, as you know, we were (C)bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict. 3 (D)For our exhortation did not come from error or uncleanness, nor was it in deceit.

4 But as (E)we have been approved by God (F)to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, (G)not as pleasing men, but God (H)who tests our hearts. 5 For (I)neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you know, nor a [b]cloak for covetousness—(J)God is witness. 6 (K)Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when (L)we might have (M)made demands (N)as apostles of Christ. 7 But (O)we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children. 8 So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased (P)to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also (Q)our own lives, because you had become dear to us. 9 For you remember, brethren, our (R)labor and toil; for laboring night and day, (S)that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.

10 (T)You are witnesses, and God also, (U)how devoutly and justly and blamelessly we behaved ourselves among you who believe; 11 as you know how we exhorted, and comforted, and [c]charged every one of you, as a father does his own children, 12 (V)that you would walk worthy of God (W)who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.

Their Conversion

13 For this reason we also thank God (X)without ceasing, because when you (Y)received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it (Z)not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively (AA)works in you who believe. 14 For you, brethren, became imitators (AB)of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For (AC)you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans, 15 (AD)who killed both the Lord Jesus and (AE)their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do not please God (AF)and are [d]contrary to all men, 16 (AG)forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved, so as always (AH)to fill up the measure of their sins; (AI)but wrath has come upon them to the uttermost.

Longing to See Them

17 But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short time (AJ)in presence, not in heart, endeavored more eagerly to see your face with great desire. 18 Therefore we wanted to come to you—even I, Paul, time and again—but (AK)Satan hindered us. 19 For (AL)what is our hope, or joy, or (AM)crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the (AN)presence of our Lord Jesus Christ (AO)at His coming? 20 For you are our glory and joy.

2 1 He declareth how faithfully he preacheth the Gospel unto them, 5 seeking neither gain, 6 nor praise of men:  10 and he proveth the same by their own testimony:  14 that they did courageously bear persecution of their countrymen: 17 that he desireth very much to see them.

1 For [a]ye yourselves know, brethren, that our entrance in unto you was not in vain,

2 [b]But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated at (A)Philippi, (as ye know) we were bold in [c]our God, to speak unto you the Gospel of God, with much striving.

3 [d]For our exhortation was not by deceit, nor [e]by uncleanness, nor by guile.

4 [f]But as we were [g]allowed of God, that the Gospel should be committed unto us, so we speak, not as they that please men, but God, which [h]approveth our hearts:

5 Neither yet did we ever use flattering words, as ye know, nor colored covetousness, God is record.

6 [i]Neither sought we praise of men, neither of you, nor of others, when we might have been [j]chargeable, as the Apostles of Christ.

7 But we were [k]gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children.

8 [l]Thus being affectioned toward you, our good will was to have dealt unto you, not the Gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

9 [m]For ye remember, brethren, (B)our labor and travail: for we labored day and night, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, and preached unto you the Gospel of God.

10 [n]Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily, and justly, and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe.

11 [o]As ye know how that we exhorted you, and comforted, and besought every one of you, (as a father his children.)

12 [p]That ye (C)would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

13 [q]For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, that when ye received the word of God, which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is indeed the word of God, which also worketh in you that believe.

14 [r]For brethren, ye are become followers of the Churches of God, which in Judea are in [s]Christ Jesus, because ye have also suffered the same things of your own [t]country men, even as they have of the Jews,

15 [u]Who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own Prophets, and have persecuted us away, [v]and God they please not, and are contrary to [w]all men,

16 And forbid us to preach unto the Gentiles, that they might be saved, to [x]fulfill their sins always: for the [y]wrath of God is come on them to the utmost.

17 [z]Forasmuch, brethren, as we [aa]were kept from you for a season, concerning sight, but not in the heart, we enforced the more to see your face with great desire.

18 Therefore we would have come unto you (I Paul, at least once or twice) but Satan hindered us.

19 For what is our hope or joy, or crown of rejoicing? are not even you it in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

20 Yea, ye are our glory and joy.

Paul’s Ministry in Thessalonica

2 You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you(A) was not without results.(B) 2 We had previously suffered(C) and been treated outrageously in Philippi,(D) as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition.(E) 3 For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives,(F) nor are we trying to trick you.(G) 4 On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.(H) We are not trying to please people(I) but God, who tests our hearts.(J) 5 You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed(K)—God is our witness.(L) 6 We were not looking for praise from people,(M) not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles(N) of Christ we could have asserted our authority.(O) 7 Instead, we were like young children[a] among you.

Just as a nursing mother cares for her children,(P) 8 so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God(Q) but our lives as well.(R) 9 Surely you remember, brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship; we worked(S) night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone(T) while we preached the gospel of God to you. 10 You are witnesses,(U) and so is God,(V) of how holy,(W) righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. 11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,(X) 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy(Y) of God, who calls(Z) you into his kingdom and glory.

13 And we also thank God continually(AA) because, when you received the word of God,(AB) which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. 14 For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators(AC) of God’s churches in Judea,(AD) which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people(AE) the same things those churches suffered from the Jews 15 who killed the Lord Jesus(AF) and the prophets(AG) and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone 16 in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles(AH) so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit.(AI) The wrath of God has come upon them at last.[b]

Paul’s Longing to See the Thessalonians

17 But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought),(AJ) out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.(AK) 18 For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan(AL) blocked our way.(AM) 19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown(AN) in which we will glory(AO) in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes?(AP) Is it not you? 20 Indeed, you are our glory(AQ) and joy.
