Israels folk begär en kung
8 När Samuel blev gammal satte han sina söner till domare över Israel. 2 (A) Hans förstfödde hette Joel och hans andre son Abia.[a] De var domare i Beer-Sheba[b]. 3 (B) Men hans söner vandrade inte på hans väg utan vek av från den och sökte egen vinning. De tog mutor och förvrängde lagen.
4 (C) Då samlades Israels alla äldste och kom till Samuel i Rama 5 (D) och sade till honom: ”Du är gammal och dina söner vandrar inte på dina vägar. Sätt nu en kung över oss till att styra över oss, så som alla andra folk har.”
6 (E) Det var i Samuels ögon ett dåligt förslag när de sade: ”Ge oss en kung[c] till att styra över oss.” Och Samuel bad till Herren. 7 (F) Då sade Herren till Samuel: ”Lyssna till folket i allt de säger till dig. Det är inte dig de har förkastat, utan det är mig de har förkastat som kung över dem. 8 Så har de alltid gjort, från den dag jag förde dem upp ur Egypten ända till denna dag. De har övergett mig och tjänat andra gudar och så gör de också mot dig. 9 (G) Men lyssna nu till deras ord. Du ska varna dem allvarligt och förklara för dem vilka rättigheter kungen får som kommer att regera över dem.” 10 Allt som Herren hade talat sade Samuel till folket, som hade begärt en kung av honom.
11 (H) Han sade: ”Denna rättighet får den kung som kommer att regera över er: Han ska ta era söner till att göra tjänst på hans vagnar och bland hans ryttare och springa framför hans vagn[d]. 12 Han ska sätta dem till befäl över tusen och till befäl över femtio eller till att plöja hans åkrar och bärga hans skörd eller till att tillverka hans krigsredskap och utrustning för hans vagnar.
13 Era döttrar ska han ta till att göra salvor, laga mat och baka bröd. 14 Era bästa åkrar, vingårdar och olivlundar ska han ta och ge åt sina tjänare. 15 Han ska ta tionde från era sädesfält och era vingårdar och ge åt sina hovmän och tjänare. 16 Och han ska ta era tjänare och tjänarinnor och era bästa unga män liksom era åsnor och använda dem för sitt behov. 17 Han ska ta tionde[e] av er småboskap, och ni kommer att bli hans tjänare[f]. 18 När ni då ropar på hjälp mot er kung som ni har valt åt er, då kommer Herren inte att svara er.” 19 Men folket vägrade att lyssna till Samuels ord och sade: ”Nej, vi måste ha en kung över oss. 20 Vi vill också bli som alla andra folk. Vår kung ska döma oss. Han ska dra ut framför oss och föra våra krig.”
21 När Samuel hörde allt detta som folket sade, framförde han det till Herren. 22 Då sade Herren till Samuel: ”Lyssna till deras ord och sätt en kung över dem.” Och Samuel sade till Israels män: ”Gå hem, var och en till sin stad.”

8 Al hacerse viejo, Samuel nombró caudillos de Israel a sus hijos. 2 Su primer hijo, que se llamaba Joel, y su segundo hijo, Abías, gobernaban en Beerseba. 3 Sin embargo, los hijos no se comportaron como su padre, sino que se volvieron ambiciosos, y se dejaron sobornar, y no obraron con justicia. 4 Entonces se reunieron todos los ancianos de Israel y fueron a entrevistarse con Samuel en Ramá, 5 para decirle: «Tú ya eres un anciano, y tus hijos no se portan como tú; por lo tanto, nombra un rey que nos gobierne, como es costumbre en todas las naciones.»
6 Samuel, disgustado porque le pedían que nombrara un rey para que los gobernara, se dirigió en oración al Señor; 7 pero el Señor le respondió: «Atiende cualquier petición que el pueblo te haga, pues no es a ti a quien rechazan, sino a mí, para que yo no reine sobre ellos. 8 Desde el día en que los saqué de Egipto, hasta el presente, han hecho conmigo lo mismo que ahora te hacen a ti, pues me han abandonado para rendir culto a otros dioses. 9 Así pues, atiende su petición; pero antes adviérteles seriamente de todos los privilegios que sobre ellos tendrá el rey que los gobierne.»
10 Entonces Samuel comunicó la respuesta del Señor al pueblo que le pedía un rey. 11 Les dijo:
—Esto es lo que les espera con el rey que los va a gobernar: Llamará a filas a los hijos de ustedes, y a unos los destinará a los carros de combate, a otros a la caballería y a otros a su guardia personal. 12 A unos los nombrará jefes de mil soldados, y a otros jefes de cincuenta. A algunos de ustedes los pondrá a arar sus tierras y recoger sus cosechas, o a fabricar sus armas y el material de sus carros de combate. 13 Y tomará también a su servicio a las hijas de ustedes, para que sean sus perfumistas, cocineras y panaderas. 14 Se apoderará de las mejores tierras y de los mejores viñedos y olivares de ustedes, y los entregará a sus funcionarios. 15 Les quitará la décima parte de sus cereales y viñedos, y la entregará a los funcionarios y oficiales de su corte. 16 También les quitará a ustedes sus criados y criadas, y sus mejores bueyes y asnos, y los hará trabajar para él. 17 Se apropiará, además, de la décima parte de sus rebaños, y hasta ustedes mismos tendrán que servirle. 18 Y el día en que se quejen por causa del rey que hayan escogido, el Señor no les hará caso.
19 Pero el pueblo, sin tomar en cuenta la advertencia de Samuel, respondió:
—No importa. Queremos tener rey, 20 para ser como las otras naciones, y para que reine sobre nosotros y nos gobierne y dirija en la guerra.
21 Después de escuchar Samuel las palabras del pueblo, se las repitió al Señor, 22 y el Señor le respondió:
—Atiende su petición y nómbrales un rey.
Entonces Samuel ordenó a los israelitas que regresaran, cada uno a la ciudad de donde venía.

Israel Asks for a King
8 When Samuel grew old, he appointed(A) his sons as Israel’s leaders.[a] 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah,(B) and they served at Beersheba.(C) 3 But his sons(D) did not follow his ways. They turned aside(E) after dishonest gain and accepted bribes(F) and perverted(G) justice.
4 So all the elders(H) of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.(I) 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king(J) to lead[b](K) us, such as all the other nations(L) have.”
6 But when they said, “Give us a king(M) to lead us,” this displeased(N) Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen(O) to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected,(P) but they have rejected me as their king.(Q) 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking(R) me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know(S) what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
10 Samuel told(T) all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take(U) your sons and make them serve(V) with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.(W) 12 Some he will assign to be commanders(X) of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your(Y) fields and vineyards(Z) and olive groves and give them to his attendants.(AA) 15 He will take a tenth(AB) of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer(AC) you in that day.(AD)”
19 But the people refused(AE) to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want(AF) a king(AG) over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations,(AH) with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated(AI) it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen(AJ) to them and give them a king.”
Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”

8 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.
3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.
7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
10 And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.
11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.
12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.
19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;
20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.
22 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
