Herrens ark i Dagons tempel

5 Filisteerna tog Guds ark och förde den från Eben-Haezer till Asdod. 2 De bar Guds ark in i Dagons tempel och ställde den bredvid Dagon. 3 När asdoditerna tidigt dagen därefter kom dit, fick de se Dagon ligga framstupa på marken framför Herrens ark. Då tog de Dagon och reste upp honom igen på hans plats. 4 Men när de tidigt nästa dag kom dit, fick de se Dagon ligga framstupa framför Herrens ark. Dagons huvud och hans båda händer hade slagits av och låg på tröskeln, bara fiskdelen satt kvar på honom. 5 I Asdod trampar därför ingen än i dag på Dagons tröskel, varken Dagons präster eller någon annan som går in i Dagons tempel.

6 Herrens hand var tung över asdoditerna. Han ställde till förödelse bland dem genom att han i Asdod och tillhörande områden slog dem med bölder. 7 När invånarna i Asdod såg att detta hände, sade de: "Israels Guds ark får inte stanna hos oss, för hans hand är tung över oss och vår gud Dagon." 8 De sände bud och samlade alla filisteernas furstar och sade: "Vad skall vi göra med Israels Guds ark?" De svarade: "Låt Israels Guds ark flyttas till Gat." Då flyttade de Israels Guds ark dit. 9 Men sedan de hade flyttat den dit, uppstod genom Herrens hand en mycket stor förvirring i staden. Han slog invånarna i staden, både små och stora, med bölder. 10 Då sände de Guds ark till Ekron. Men när Guds ark kom till Ekron, ropade ekroniterna: "De har flyttat Israels Guds ark till oss för att döda oss och vårt folk." 11 De sände bud och samlade alla filisteernas furstar och sade: "Sänd bort Israels Guds ark, så att den får komma tillbaka till sin plats igen och inte dödar oss och vårt folk." Ty en dödlig förvirring hade uppstått i hela staden. Guds hand låg mycket tung över den. 12 De av invånarna som inte dog blev slagna med bölder, och ropet från staden steg upp mot himlen.

5 Filistéerna förde sedan Guds ark från slagfältet i Even Haeser till Ashdod 2 och ställde den i Dagons tempel bredvid guden Dagon. 3 Men när folket i staden nästa morgon steg upp, hade Dagon fallit ner framför Herrens ark med ansiktet mot marken. De satte då upp honom igen på hans plats, 4 men när de steg upp morgonen därpå, låg Dagon igen framför Herrens ark. Hans huvud och händer hade slagits av och låg vid tröskeln, medan kroppen låg för sig. 5 Det är därför som varken Dagons präster eller någon annan ens idag vill trampa på tröskeln till Dagons tempel i Ashdod.

6 Herrens hand vilade tungt över invånarna i Ashdod och de närliggande byarna: han ställde till förödelse bland dem och slog dem med bölder. 7 Och när folket förstod vad som höll på att hända, utropade de: ”Vi kan inte behålla Israels Guds ark här längre! Hans hand vilar tungt över oss och vår gud Dagon.” 8 De kallade dit filistéernas alla hövdingar och frågade dem vad de skulle göra med arken. Hövdingarna svarade att man skulle föra Israels Guds ark till Gat. Så fördes den till Gat. 9 Men när arken anlände dit, vilade Herrens hand över den staden och stor panik uppstod. Han slog alla, både ung och gammal, och de drabbades av bölder.

10 De förde därefter arken vidare till Ekron, men när Ekrons invånare såg den komma, utropade de: ”De för hit Israels Guds ark för att döda oss!” 11 Sedan kallade de dit filistéernas alla hövdingar och sa till dem att föra tillbaka Israels Guds ark till dess rätta plats, för att inte hela staden skulle dö. Dödsskräcken hade nämligen redan drabbat hela staden, så tung vilade Herrens hand över den. 12 De som inte dog fick svåra bölder och gråt och klagan steg mot himlen.

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron

5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)

6 The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”

They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.

9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)

As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

The Ark in the Temple of Dagon. 1 [a](A)The Philistines, having captured the ark of God, transferred it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.(B) 2 They then took the ark of God and brought it into the temple of Dagon, placing it beside Dagon. 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next morning, Dagon was lying face down on the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they picked Dagon up and put him back in his place. 4 But early the next morning, when they arose, Dagon lay face down on the ground before the ark of the Lord, his head and hands broken off and lying on the threshold, his trunk alone intact. 5 For this reason, neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter the temple of Dagon tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this very day.

The Ark Is Carried About. 6 Now the hand of the Lord weighed heavily on the people of Ashdod, ravaging them and afflicting the city and its vicinity with tumors.[b](C) 7 On seeing how matters stood, the people of Ashdod decided, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for his hand weighs heavily on us and Dagon our god.” 8 So they summoned all the Philistine leaders and inquired of them, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” The people of Gath replied, “Let them move the ark of the God of Israel to us.” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel to Gath. 9 But after it had been brought there, the hand of the Lord was against the city, resulting in utter turmoil: the Lord afflicted its inhabitants, young and old, and tumors broke out on them. 10 The ark of God was next sent to Ekron; but as it entered that city, the people there cried out, “Why have they brought the ark of the God of Israel here to kill us and our kindred?” 11 Then they, too, sent a summons to all the Philistine leaders and pleaded: “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. Send it back to its place so it does not kill us and our kindred.” A deadly panic had seized the whole city, since the hand of God lay heavy upon it. 12 Those who escaped death were afflicted with tumors. Thus the outcry from the city went up to the heavens.

  1. 5:1–12 The Philistines take the ark to Dagon’s temple in Ashdod to confirm their victory. Their action, however, underscores Dagon’s impotence and the Lord’s power. The narrator relates the transfer of the ark from Ashdod to Gath and then Ekron as the progress of a conquering warrior king through the Philistine cities along the central plain. The Philistines’ humiliation recalls the climax of the Samson story (Jgs 16:13–21).
  2. 5:6 Tumors: the Septuagint adds that mice, suggestive of bubonic plague, infested their fields, thus anticipating the golden mice in 6:4–5. One symptom of bubonic plague is swollen lymph nodes (“tumors”).
