29 Filistéerna församlade nu alla sina härar i Afek, medan israeliterna voro lägrade vid källan i Jisreel.
2 Då nu filistéernas hövdingar tågade fram med avdelningar på hundra och tusen, och David och hans män därvid tågade sist fram, tillika med Akis,
3 sade filistéernas furstar: »Vad hava dessa hebréer här att göra?» Men Akis svarade filistéernas furstar: »Denne David är ju Sauls, Israels konungs, tjänare, som nu har varit hos mig över år och dag, och jag har icke funnit något ont hos honom, från den dag han gick över till mig ända till denna dag.
4 Då blevo filistéernas furstar förtörnade på honom; och filistéernas furstar sade till honom: »Låt mannen vända om och gå tillbaka till den ort du har anvisat honom; han får icke draga med med oss till strid, för att han icke under striden må bliva vår motståndare. Ty varigenom skulle han väl bättre kunna göra sig behaglig för sin herre än genom dessa mäns huvuden?
5 Han är ju den David till vilkens ära man sjunger så under dansen: 'Saul har slagit sina tusen, men David sina tio tusen.'»
6 Då kallade Akis David till sig och sade till honom: »Så sant HERREN lever, du är en redlig man, och att du går ut och in här hos mig i lägret är mig välbehagligt, ty jag har icke funnit något ont hos dig, från den dag du kom till mig ända till denna dag; men för hövdingarna är du icke välbehaglig.
7 Så vänd nu tillbaka och gå i frid, för att du icke må göra något som misshagar filistéernas hövdingar.»
8 David sade till Akis: »Vad har jag då gjort, och vad har du funnit hos din tjänare, från den dag jag kom i din tjänst ända till denna dag, eftersom jag icke får gå åstad och strida mot min herre konungens fiender?»
9 Akis svarade och sade till David: »Jag vet bäst att du är mig välbehaglig såsom en Guds ängel; men filistéernas furstar säga: 'Han får icke draga upp med oss i striden.'
10 Så stå nu upp bittida i morgon, jämte din herres tjänare som hava kommit hit med dig; och när morgon haven stått bittida upp, mån I draga edra färde, så snart det har blivit dager.»
11 Då stod David bittida upp med sina män för att om morgonen drag tillbaka till filistéernas land. Men filistéerna drogo upp till Jisreel.

Filistéernas hövdingar litar inte på David
29 Den filistéiska armén samlade nu alla sina styrkor i Afek, medan israeliterna slog läger vid Jisreels källa. 2 De filistéiska hövdingarna ledde sina trupper i avdelningar om hundra och tusen man och längst bak marscherade David och hans män tillsammans med Akish.
3 Men de filistéiska hövdingarna sa: ”Vad gör de där hebréerna här?” Akish svarade: ”Det här är David som tidigare tjänade Israels kung Saul. Han har varit med mig i över ett år nu och jag har inte funnit något hos honom som jag kan anmärka på.”
4 Men de filistéiska ledarna blev förargade. ”Skicka tillbaka honom till den stad du gett honom!” sa de. ”Han får inte strida med oss! Han kommer att vända sig emot oss. Finns det något bättre sätt för honom att försona sig med sin herre än genom att låta våra huvuden rulla? 5 Det var ju honom som de israelitiska kvinnorna sjöng om i sina danser:
’Saul har slagit sina tusen
och David sina tiotusen!’ ”
6 Då kallade Akish på David och sa: ”Så sant Herren lever, du är pålitlig och jag skulle vilja ha dig med oss, för jag har inte funnit något klandervärt hos dig sedan du kom till mig. Men mina befälhavare säger nej. 7 Jag ber dig vända tillbaka i lugn och ro för att inte reta upp dem.”
8 ”Vad har jag gjort?” frågade David. ”Har du under hela den tid jag varit hos dig funnit något att klandra mig, din tjänare, för? Varför får jag inte strida mot dina fiender, min herre och konung?” 9 Men Akish svarade: ”I mina ögon är du som en Guds ängel, men mina befälhavare vill inte ha dig med i striden. 10 Så stig nu upp tidigt i morgon bitti tillsammans med din herres tjänare som kommit med dig och gå tillbaka till den stad jag har gett er. Lämna oss så snart det blir ljust!” 11 David steg upp tidigt följande morgon och vände tillbaka till filistéernas land, medan den filistéiska armén drog vidare mot Jisreel.

The Philistines Reject David
29 Then (A)the Philistines gathered together all their armies (B)at Aphek, and the Israelites encamped by a fountain which is in Jezreel. 2 And the (C)lords of the Philistines [a]passed in review by hundreds and by thousands, but (D)David and his men passed in review at the rear with Achish. 3 Then the princes of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?”
And Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul king of Israel, who has been with me (E)these days, or these years? And to this day I have (F)found no fault in him since he defected to me.”
4 But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him; so the princes of the Philistines said to him, (G)“Make this fellow return, that he may go back to the place which you have appointed for him, and do not let him go down with us to (H)battle, lest (I)in the battle he become our adversary. For with what could he reconcile himself to his master, if not with the heads of these (J)men? 5 Is this not David, (K)of whom they sang to one another in dances, saying:
(L)‘Saul has slain his thousands,
And David his ten thousands’?”
6 Then Achish called David and said to him, “Surely, as the Lord lives, you have been upright, and (M)your going out and your coming in with me in the army is good in my sight. For to this day (N)I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to me. Nevertheless the lords do not favor you. 7 Therefore return now, and go in peace, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.”
8 So David said to Achish, “But what have I done? And to this day what have you found in your servant as long as I have been with you, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”
9 Then Achish answered and said to David, “I know that you are as good in my sight (O)as an angel of God; nevertheless (P)the princes of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’ 10 Now therefore, rise early in the morning with your master’s servants (Q)who have come with [b]you. And as soon as you are up early in the morning and have light, depart.”
11 So David and his men rose early to depart in the morning, to return to the land of the Philistines. (R)And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

2 And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rereward with Achish.
3 Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?
4 And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an adversary to us: for wherewith should he reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?
5 Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
6 Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the Lord liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.
7 Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.
8 And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?
9 And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.
10 Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master's servants that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart.
11 So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

Achish Sends David Back to Ziklag
29 The Philistines gathered(A) all their forces at Aphek,(B) and Israel camped by the spring in Jezreel.(C) 2 As the Philistine rulers marched with their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men were marching at the rear(D) with Achish. 3 The commanders of the Philistines asked, “What about these Hebrews?”
Achish replied, “Is this not David,(E) who was an officer of Saul king of Israel? He has already been with me for over a year,(F) and from the day he left Saul until now, I have found no fault in him.”
4 But the Philistine commanders were angry with Achish and said, “Send(G) the man back, that he may return to the place you assigned him. He must not go with us into battle, or he will turn(H) against us during the fighting. How better could he regain his master’s favor than by taking the heads of our own men? 5 Isn’t this the David they sang about in their dances:
“‘Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his tens of thousands’?”(I)
6 So Achish called David and said to him, “As surely as the Lord lives, you have been reliable, and I would be pleased to have you serve with me in the army. From the day(J) you came to me until today, I have found no fault in you, but the rulers(K) don’t approve of you. 7 Now turn back and go in peace; do nothing to displease the Philistine rulers.”
8 “But what have I done?” asked David. “What have you found against your servant from the day I came to you until now? Why can’t I go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”
9 Achish answered, “I know that you have been as pleasing in my eyes as an angel(L) of God; nevertheless, the Philistine commanders(M) have said, ‘He must not go up with us into battle.’ 10 Now get up early, along with your master’s servants who have come with you, and leave(N) in the morning as soon as it is light.”
11 So David and his men got up early in the morning to go back to the land of the Philistines, and the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
