Mordet på prästerna
22 David begav sig därifrån och flydde bort till Adullams grotta. När hans bröder och hela hans fars hus fick höra detta, kom de dit ner till honom. 2 Alla som var i svårigheter, alla som hade fordringsägare och alla som var missnöjda samlades hos honom, och han blev deras ledare. Omkring fyrahundra man slöt sig till honom.
3 Därifrån begav sig David till Mispe i Moab. Till kungen i Moab sade han: "Låt min far och min mor få komma över hit och vara hos er, till dess jag får veta vad Gud vill göra med mig." 4 Han förde dem fram inför kungen i Moab och de fick stanna hos honom så länge David var i borgen. 5 Men profeten Gad sade till David: "Du skall inte stanna här i borgen. Drag bort härifrån till Juda land." Då begav sig David därifrån och kom till Heretskogen.
6 Saul fick höra att David och de män som var med honom hade blivit upptäckta. Saul satt då under tamarisken på höjden i Gibea med sitt spjut i handen, och alla hans tjänare stod omkring honom. 7 Då sade han till sina tjänare, som stod omkring honom: "Hör, ni benjaminiter. Skall Isais son ge er allesammans åkrar och vingårdar och göra er alla till befäl och underbefäl? 8 Ni har ju alla sammansvurit er mot mig och ingen har avslöjat för mig att min son har slutit förbund med Isais son. Ingen av er bekymrar sig så pass mycket om mig att han har avslöjat det för mig. Min son har ju eggat upp min tjänare så att han ligger i bakhåll för mig, så som nu sker." 9 Edomiten Doeg, som också stod där bland Sauls tjänare, sade då: "Jag såg Isais son komma till Ahimelek, Ahitubs son, i Nob. 10 Denne frågade då Herren för honom och gav honom reskost. Han gav honom också fili- steen Goliats svärd."
11 Då sände kungen bud och lät kalla till sig prästen Ahimelek, Ahitubs son, och hela hans fars hus, prästerna i Nob, och de kom alla till kungen. 12 Saul sade: "Hör nu på mig, du Ahitubs son." Han svarade: "Här är jag, min herre." 13 Saul sade till honom: "Varför har ni sammansvurit er mot mig, du och Isais son? Varför har du gett honom bröd och ett svärd och frågat Gud för honom, för att han skulle sätta sig upp mot mig och ligga i bakhåll för mig, så som nu sker?" 14 Ahimelek svarade kungen: "Vem bland alla dina tjänare är så betrodd som David, han som är konungens svärson och har tillträde till din inre krets och är högt ärad i ditt hus? 15 Var då detta första gången som jag frågade Gud för honom? Nej, verkligen inte! Därför må konungen inte lägga skuld på mig, sin tjänare, eller på någon i min fars hus, för din tjänare visste alls ingenting om allt detta."
16 Men kungen sade: "Du måste dö, Ahimelek, du och hela din fars hus." 17 Kungen sade till drabanterna som stod där omkring honom: "Kom fram och döda Herrens präster, för de håller också med David. Fastän de visste att han flydde, avslöjade de det inte för mig." Men kungens tjänare ville inte räcka ut sin hand för att stöta ner Herrens präster. 18 Då sade kungen till Doeg: "Gå fram du och stöt ner prästerna!" Edomiten Doeg gick då fram och stötte ner prästerna och dödade den dagen åttiofem män som bar linne-efod. 19 Invånarna i Nob, både män och kvinnor, barn och spädbarn, blev slagna av Saul med svärd. Nötboskap, åsnor och får blev också slagna med svärd.
20 Endast en son till Ahimelek, Ahitubs son, kom undan. Han hette Ebjatar och han flydde bort till David. 21 Ebjatar talade om för David att Saul hade dödat Herrens präster. 22 Då sade David till Ebjatar: "Jag förstod redan då att edomiten Doeg, eftersom han var där, skulle tala om allt för Saul. Det är jag som är orsaken till att hela din fars hus har utplånats. 23 Stanna kvar hos mig och var inte rädd. Den som vill beröva mig livet, vill också ta ditt liv. Hos mig är du i säkerhet."

David at Adullam and Mizpah
22 David left Gath and escaped to the cave(A) of Adullam.(B) When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there. 2 All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered(C) around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.
3 From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, “Would you let my father and mother come and stay with you until I learn what God will do for me?” 4 So he left them with the king of Moab,(D) and they stayed with him as long as David was in the stronghold.
5 But the prophet Gad(E) said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold. Go into the land of Judah.” So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.(F)
Saul Kills the Priests of Nob
6 Now Saul heard that David and his men had been discovered. And Saul was seated,(G) spear in hand, under the tamarisk(H) tree on the hill at Gibeah, with all his officials standing at his side. 7 He said to them, “Listen, men of Benjamin! Will the son of Jesse give all of you fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders(I) of thousands and commanders of hundreds? 8 Is that why you have all conspired(J) against me? No one tells me when my son makes a covenant(K) with the son of Jesse.(L) None of you is concerned(M) about me or tells me that my son has incited my servant to lie in wait for me, as he does today.”
9 But Doeg(N) the Edomite, who was standing with Saul’s officials, said, “I saw the son of Jesse come to Ahimelek son of Ahitub(O) at Nob.(P) 10 Ahimelek inquired(Q) of the Lord for him; he also gave him provisions(R) and the sword(S) of Goliath the Philistine.”
11 Then the king sent for the priest Ahimelek son of Ahitub and all the men of his family, who were the priests at Nob, and they all came to the king. 12 Saul said, “Listen now, son of Ahitub.”
“Yes, my lord,” he answered.
13 Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired(T) against me, you and the son of Jesse, giving him bread and a sword and inquiring of God for him, so that he has rebelled against me and lies in wait for me, as he does today?”
14 Ahimelek answered the king, “Who(U) of all your servants is as loyal as David, the king’s son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard and highly respected in your household? 15 Was that day the first time I inquired of God for him? Of course not! Let not the king accuse your servant or any of his father’s family, for your servant knows nothing at all about this whole affair.”
16 But the king said, “You will surely die, Ahimelek, you and your whole family.(V)”
17 Then the king ordered the guards at his side: “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because they too have sided with David. They knew he was fleeing, yet they did not tell me.”
But the king’s officials were unwilling(W) to raise a hand to strike the priests of the Lord.
18 The king then ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests.”(X) So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck them down. That day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.(Y) 19 He also put to the sword(Z) Nob,(AA) the town of the priests, with its men and women, its children and infants, and its cattle, donkeys and sheep.
20 But one son of Ahimelek son of Ahitub,(AB) named Abiathar,(AC) escaped and fled to join David.(AD) 21 He told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 Then David said to Abiathar, “That day, when Doeg(AE) the Edomite was there, I knew he would be sure to tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of your whole family. 23 Stay with me; don’t be afraid. The man who wants to kill you(AF) is trying to kill me too. You will be safe with me.”

2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.
3 And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.
4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold.
5 And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.
6 When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;)
7 Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;
8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.
10 And he enquired of the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.
11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king.
12 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.
13 And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house?
15 Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.
16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house.
17 And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the Lord: because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the Lord.
18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.
19 And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.
20 And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.
21 And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the Lord's priests.
22 And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's house.
23 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.

Saul Murders the Priests
6 When Saul heard that David and the men who were with him had been discovered—now Saul was staying in (H)Gibeah under a tamarisk tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants standing about him— 7 then Saul said to his servants who stood about him, “Hear now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse (I)give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds? 8 All of you have conspired against me, and there is no one who reveals to me that (J)my son has made a covenant with the son of Jesse; and there is not one of you who is sorry for me or reveals to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as it is this day.”
9 Then answered (K)Doeg the Edomite, who was set over the servants of Saul, and said, “I saw the son of Jesse going to Nob, to (L)Ahimelech the son of (M)Ahitub. 10 (N)And he inquired of the Lord for him, (O)gave him provisions, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”
11 So the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob. And they all came to the king. 12 And Saul said, “Hear now, son of Ahitub!”
He answered, “Here I am, my lord.”
13 Then Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as it is this day?”
14 So Ahimelech answered the king and said, “And who among all your servants is as (P)faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, who goes at your bidding, and is honorable in your house? 15 Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king impute anything to his servant, or to any in the house of my father. For your servant knew nothing of all this, little or much.”
16 And the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all (Q)your father’s house!” 17 Then the king said to the guards who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled and did not tell it to me.” But the servants of the king (R)would not lift their hands to strike the priests of the Lord. 18 And the king said to Doeg, “You turn and kill the priests!” So Doeg the Edomite turned and [b]struck the priests, and (S)killed on that day eighty-five men who wore a linen ephod. 19 (T)Also Nob, the city of the priests, he struck with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and nursing infants, oxen and donkeys and sheep—with the edge of the sword.
20 (U)Now one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, (V)escaped and fled after David. 21 And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the Lord’s priests. 22 So David said to Abiathar, “I knew that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have caused the death of all the persons of your father’s [c]house. 23 Stay with me; do not fear. (W)For he who seeks my life seeks your life, but with me you shall be safe.”
