David och Jonatan
20 Men David flydde från Najot i Rama och kom till Jonatan och frågade: ”Vad har jag gjort? Vilken skuld eller synd har jag inför din far eftersom han försöker ta mitt liv?” 2 ”Aldrig!” svarade Jonatan. ”Du ska inte dö. Min far gör ingenting, varken stort eller smått, utan att låta mig få veta det. Varför skulle han då dölja detta för mig? Nej, så ska inte ske.” 3 Men David försäkrade med ed och sade: ”Din far vet mycket väl att du tycker om mig. Därför tänker han: Jonatan ska inte få veta det, så att han inte blir bedrövad. Men så sant Herren lever och så sant du själv lever: Det är inte mer än ett steg mellan mig och döden.” 4 Då sade Jonatan till David: ”Vad du än önskar ska jag göra för dig.”
5 (A) David sade till Jonatan: ”I morgon är det nymånad[a], och då skulle jag egentligen sitta till bords med kungen. Men låt mig nu gå och gömma mig ute på marken till i övermorgon kväll. 6 Om din far saknar mig, så säg: David bad mig enträget att få skynda i väg till sin stad Betlehem,[b] där hela släkten nu firar sin årliga offerfest. 7 Om han säger: ’Bra!’, då kan din tjänare vara trygg. Men blir han arg, så vet du att han har ont i sinnet. 8 (B) Visa nu godhet mot din tjänare, eftersom du har låtit din tjänare ingå ett Herrens förbund med dig. Men om det finns skuld hos mig, så döda mig du! Varför föra mig till din far?” 9 Jonatan svarade: ”Nej aldrig! Märker jag på något sätt att min far har bestämt sig för att göra något ont mot dig, så talar jag om det för dig.” 10 Då sade David till Jonatan: ”Vem ska meddela mig om din far ger dig ett hårt svar?”
11 ”Kom”, sade Jonatan, ”vi går ut på fälten!” Så gick de båda ut på fälten. 12 Och Jonatan sade till David: ”Vid Herren, Israels Gud: jag ska fråga min far vid den här tiden i morgon eller i övermorgon, och finner jag att det låter bra för David så lovar jag att sända bud till dig och avslöja det för dig. 13 Må Herren straffa Jonatan både nu och i framtiden om jag inte avslöjar för dig ifall min far har bestämt sig för att göra dig något ont, så att du kan gå din väg i trygghet. Må Herren vara med dig, så som han har varit med min far. 14 Lova mig att du visar Herrens godhet mot mig så länge jag lever, och att du när jag dör 15 aldrig upphör med din godhet mot mitt hus, inte ens när Herren har utrotat Davids alla fiender från jorden.”
16 (C) Så slöt Jonatan förbund med Davids hus och sade: ”Herren ska ställa Davids fiender till svars.” 17 (D) Av kärlek till David gav Jonatan på nytt sin ed till honom, för han älskade honom lika djupt som sitt eget liv.
18 Sedan sade Jonatan till honom: ”I morgon är det nymånad, och då kommer du att saknas, för din plats står tom. 19 (E) Men skynda dig i övermorgon ner till platsen där du gömde dig den dag då ogärningen skulle ha ägt rum, och vänta där vid Eselstenen. 20 Då ska jag skjuta tre pilar bredvid den, som om jag sköt mot ett mål. 21 Sedan skickar jag min tjänare att hitta pilarna. Om jag då säger till tjänaren: Se, pilarna är bakom dig, ta upp dem! Då kan du komma fram och vara trygg, då är det ingen fara så sant Herren lever. 22 Men om jag säger till den unge mannen: Se, pilarna är framför dig, längre bort! Gå i så fall din väg, för Herren sänder dig bort. 23 Och i det som vi har talat om, du och jag, är Herren vittne mellan mig och dig för all framtid.”
24 David gömde sig ute på marken. När nymånaden var inne satte kungen sig till bords för att äta. 25 Kungen satte sig på sin vanliga plats, platsen vid väggen. Jonatan reste sig, och Abner satte sig vid Sauls sida. Men Davids plats stod tom. 26 (F) Saul sade ingenting den dagen, för han tänkte: ”Något har hänt honom. Han är nog inte ren[c]. Säkert är han inte ren.” 27 Men nästa dag, dagen efter nymånadsdagen, stod Davids plats också tom. Då sade Saul till sin son Jonatan: ”Varför har Ishais son inte kommit till måltiden, varken i går eller i dag?” 28 Jonatan svarade Saul: ”David bad mig enträget att få gå till Betlehem. 29 Han sade: Låt mig gå, för vi har en släktofferfest i staden och min bror själv befallde mig att komma. Om jag funnit nåd för dina ögon, så låt mig gå och besöka mina bröder. Därför har han inte kommit till kungens bord.”
30 Då blev Saul rasande på Jonatan och sade till honom: ”Du son till en fallen och upprorisk kvinna! Jag visste det, du har tagit parti för Ishais son till skam för dig själv och till skam för din mor som har fött dig. 31 (G) För så länge Ishais son lever på jorden är varken du eller din kungamakt säker. Skicka nu efter honom och hämta hit honom till mig, för han måste dö!” 32 (H) Jonatan svarade sin far Saul: ”Varför ska han dödas? Vad har han gjort?”
33 (I) Då kastade Saul spjutet mot honom för att genomborra honom. Jonatan förstod nu att hans far var fast besluten att döda David. 34 Jonatan reste sig från bordet i häftig vrede och åt ingenting den andra nymånadsdagen, för han var bedrövad för Davids skull eftersom hans far hade skymfat honom.
35 Nästa morgon gick Jonatan ut på marken vid den tid han hade bestämt med David. Han hade en liten pojke med sig. 36 ”Spring och hitta pilarna som jag skjuter”, sade han till pojken. Medan pojken sprang sköt Jonatan pilen över honom. 37 När pojken kom till stället dit Jonatan hade skjutit pilen, ropade Jonatan efter honom: ”Pilen är framför dig, längre bort!” 38 Och Jonatan ropade efter pojken: ”Fort, skynda dig, stanna inte!” Pojken som Jonatan hade med sig tog upp pilen och kom till sin herre. 39 Men han visste inte vad det var fråga om, bara Jonatan och David visste det. 40 Jonatan lämnade sina vapen till pojken som han hade med sig och sade till honom: ”Gå, ta med dem till staden.”
41 Men sedan pojken hade gått, kom David fram från södra sidan. Han föll ner till jorden på sitt ansikte och bugade sig tre gånger. De kysste varandra och grät tillsammans, och David grät högt. 42 Jonatan sade till David: ”Gå i frid. Vi har båda gett vår ed vid Herrens namn när vi sade: Herren ska vara vittne mellan mig och dig, mellan mina efterkommande och dina för all framtid.” 43 Sedan bröt David upp och gick sin väg, och Jonatan gick in i staden igen.

20 Then David fled from Naioth at Ramah and went to Jonathan and asked, “What have I done? What is my crime? How have I wronged(A) your father, that he is trying to kill me?”(B)
2 “Never!” Jonathan replied. “You are not going to die! Look, my father doesn’t do anything, great or small, without letting me know. Why would he hide this from me? It isn’t so!”
3 But David took an oath(C) and said, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said to himself, ‘Jonathan must not know this or he will be grieved.’ Yet as surely as the Lord lives and as you live, there is only a step between me and death.”
4 Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do for you.”
5 So David said, “Look, tomorrow is the New Moon feast,(D) and I am supposed to dine with the king; but let me go and hide(E) in the field until the evening of the day after tomorrow. 6 If your father misses me at all, tell him, ‘David earnestly asked my permission(F) to hurry to Bethlehem,(G) his hometown, because an annual(H) sacrifice is being made there for his whole clan.’ 7 If he says, ‘Very well,’ then your servant is safe. But if he loses his temper,(I) you can be sure that he is determined(J) to harm me. 8 As for you, show kindness to your servant, for you have brought him into a covenant(K) with you before the Lord. If I am guilty, then kill(L) me yourself! Why hand me over to your father?”
9 “Never!” Jonathan said. “If I had the least inkling that my father was determined to harm you, wouldn’t I tell you?”
10 David asked, “Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?”
11 “Come,” Jonathan said, “let’s go out into the field.” So they went there together.
12 Then Jonathan said to David, “I swear by the Lord, the God of Israel, that I will surely sound(M) out my father by this time the day after tomorrow! If he is favorably disposed toward you, will I not send you word and let you know? 13 But if my father intends to harm you, may the Lord deal with Jonathan, be it ever so severely,(N) if I do not let you know and send you away in peace. May the Lord be with(O) you as he has been with my father. 14 But show me unfailing kindness(P) like the Lord’s kindness as long as I live, so that I may not be killed, 15 and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family(Q)—not even when the Lord has cut off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”
16 So Jonathan(R) made a covenant(S) with the house of David, saying, “May the Lord call David’s enemies to account.(T)” 17 And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath(U) out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.
18 Then Jonathan said to David, “Tomorrow is the New Moon feast. You will be missed, because your seat will be empty.(V) 19 The day after tomorrow, toward evening, go to the place where you hid(W) when this trouble began, and wait by the stone Ezel. 20 I will shoot three arrows(X) to the side of it, as though I were shooting at a target. 21 Then I will send a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I say to him, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them here,’ then come, because, as surely as the Lord lives, you are safe; there is no danger. 22 But if I say to the boy, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond(Y) you,’ then you must go, because the Lord has sent you away. 23 And about the matter you and I discussed—remember, the Lord is witness(Z) between you and me forever.”
24 So David hid in the field, and when the New Moon feast(AA) came, the king sat down to eat. 25 He sat in his customary place by the wall, opposite Jonathan,[a] and Abner sat next to Saul, but David’s place was empty.(AB) 26 Saul said nothing that day, for he thought, “Something must have happened to David to make him ceremonially unclean—surely he is unclean.(AC)” 27 But the next day, the second day of the month, David’s place was empty again. Then Saul said to his son Jonathan, “Why hasn’t the son of Jesse come to the meal, either yesterday or today?”
28 Jonathan answered, “David earnestly asked me for permission(AD) to go to Bethlehem. 29 He said, ‘Let me go, because our family is observing a sacrifice(AE) in the town and my brother has ordered me to be there. If I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away to see my brothers.’ That is why he has not come to the king’s table.”
30 Saul’s anger flared up at Jonathan and he said to him, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of the mother who bore you? 31 As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom(AF) will be established. Now send someone to bring him to me, for he must die!”
32 “Why(AG) should he be put to death? What(AH) has he done?” Jonathan asked his father. 33 But Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended(AI) to kill David.
34 Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger; on that second day of the feast he did not eat, because he was grieved at his father’s shameful treatment of David.
35 In the morning Jonathan went out to the field for his meeting with David. He had a small boy with him, 36 and he said to the boy, “Run and find the arrows I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. 37 When the boy came to the place where Jonathan’s arrow had fallen, Jonathan called out after him, “Isn’t the arrow beyond(AJ) you?” 38 Then he shouted, “Hurry! Go quickly! Don’t stop!” The boy picked up the arrow and returned to his master. 39 (The boy knew nothing about all this; only Jonathan and David knew.) 40 Then Jonathan gave his weapons to the boy and said, “Go, carry them back to town.”
41 After the boy had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone and bowed down before Jonathan three times, with his face to the ground.(AK) Then they kissed each other and wept together—but David wept the most.
42 Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace,(AL) for we have sworn friendship(AM) with each other in the name of the Lord,(AN) saying, ‘The Lord is witness(AO) between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever.(AP)’” Then David left, and Jonathan went back to the town.[b]

Patto fra Davide e Gionatan
20 (A)Davide fuggì da Naiot, presso Rama, andò a trovare Gionatan e gli disse: «Che cosa ho fatto? Qual è la mia colpa? Qual è il mio peccato verso tuo padre, perché egli minacci la mia vita?» 2 Gionatan gli rispose: «No, affatto! Tu non morirai. Ecco, mio padre non fa niente, né di grande né di piccolo, senza dirmelo. Perché dovrebbe nascondermi questa intenzione? Non è possibile». 3 Ma Davide replicò, giurando: «Tuo padre sa molto bene che io ho trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi; perciò avrà detto: “Gionatan non sappia questo, affinché non ne abbia dispiacere”; ma, com’è vero che il Signore vive e tu stesso vivi, tra me e la morte non c’è che un passo».
4 Gionatan disse a Davide: «Che cosa desideri che io ti faccia?» 5 Davide rispose a Gionatan: «Domani è la luna nuova, e io dovrei pranzare con il re; lasciami andare e mi nasconderò per la campagna fino alla terza sera. 6 Se tuo padre nota la mia assenza, tu gli dirai: “Davide mi ha pregato con insistenza di lasciarlo andare fino a Betlemme, la sua città, perché c’è il sacrificio annuale per tutta la sua famiglia”. 7 Se egli dice: “Va bene!” allora il tuo servo avrà pace; ma se invece si adira, sappi che il male che mi vuol fare è deciso. 8 Mostra dunque la tua bontà verso il tuo servo, perché hai fatto entrare il tuo servo in un patto con te nel nome del Signore. Se c’è in me qualche malvagità, uccidimi tu; ma non condurmi da tuo padre!»
9 Gionatan disse: «Lungi da te questo pensiero! Se io venissi a sapere che il male è deciso da parte di mio padre e sta per venirti addosso, non te lo farei sapere?» 10 Davide disse a Gionatan: «Chi m’informerà, nel caso che tuo padre ti dia una risposta dura?» 11 Gionatan disse a Davide: «Vieni, andiamo fuori nei campi!» E andarono insieme fuori nei campi.
12 Gionatan disse a Davide: «Il Signore, il Dio d’Israele, mi sia testimone! Quando domani o dopodomani, a quest’ora, io avrò sentito quello che pensa mio padre, se egli è ben disposto verso Davide e io non mando a fartelo sapere, 13 il Signore tratti Gionatan con tutto il suo rigore! Nel caso poi che mio padre voglia farti del male, te lo farò sapere e ti lascerò partire perché tu ti metta al sicuro; e il Signore sia con te come è stato con mio padre! 14 Possa tu, se sarò ancora in vita, usare verso di me la bontà del Signore, perché io non muoia. 15 Non cessare mai di essere buono verso la mia casa, neppure quando il Signore avrà sterminato dalla faccia della terra fino all’ultimo i nemici di Davide». 16 Così Gionatan strinse alleanza con la casa di Davide, dicendo: «Il Signore faccia vendetta dei nemici di Davide!»
17 Per l’amore che aveva verso di lui, Gionatan fece di nuovo giurare Davide; perché egli l’amava come la sua stessa vita.
18 Poi Gionatan gli disse: «Domani è la luna nuova e la tua assenza sarà notata, perché il tuo posto sarà vuoto. 19 Dopodomani dunque tu scenderai giù fino al luogo dove ti nascondesti il giorno di quel fatto[a] e rimarrai presso la pietra di Ezel. 20 Io tirerò tre frecce da quel lato, come se tirassi al bersaglio. 21 Poi subito manderò il ragazzo, dicendogli: “Va’ a cercare le frecce”. Se dico al ragazzo: “Guarda, le frecce sono di qua da te, prendile!”, tu allora vieni, perché tutto va bene per te e non hai nulla da temere, come il Signore vive! 22 Ma se dico al giovane: “Guarda, le frecce sono di là da te!”, allora vattene, perché il Signore ti manda via. 23 Quanto a quel che abbiamo convenuto tu e io, ecco, il Signore ne è testimone per sempre».
24 Davide dunque si nascose nella campagna; e quando venne il novilunio, il re si mise a tavola per mangiare. 25 Il re, come al solito, si sedette sulla sedia che era vicina al muro; Gionatan si mise di fronte. Abner si sedette accanto a Saul, ma il posto di Davide rimase vuoto. 26 Tuttavia Saul non disse nulla quel giorno, perché pensava: «Gli è successo qualcosa per cui non è puro; certo egli non è puro». 27 Ma l’indomani, il secondo giorno della luna nuova, il posto di Davide era ancora vuoto; allora Saul disse a Gionatan suo figlio: «Perché il figlio d’Isai non è venuto a mangiare né ieri né oggi?» 28 Gionatan rispose a Saul: «Davide mi ha chiesto con insistenza di lasciarlo andare a Betlemme; 29 e ha detto: “Ti prego, lasciami andare, perché abbiamo in città un sacrificio di famiglia e mio fratello mi ha raccomandato di andarvi; ora dunque, se ho trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, ti prego, lasciami fare una corsa per andare a vedere i miei fratelli”. Per questa ragione egli non è venuto alla mensa del re». 30 Allora l’ira di Saul si accese contro Gionatan, e gli disse: «Figlio perverso e ribelle, non so io forse che tu prendi le difese del figlio d’Isai, a tua vergogna e a vergogna di tua madre? 31 Poiché fintanto che il figlio d’Isai avrà vita sulla terra non vi sarà stabilità per te né per il tuo regno. Dunque mandalo a cercare e fallo venire da me, perché deve morire». 32 Gionatan rispose a Saul suo padre e gli disse: «Perché dovrebbe morire? Che ha fatto?» 33 Saul brandì la lancia contro di lui per colpirlo. Allora Gionatan riconobbe che suo padre aveva deciso di uccidere Davide. 34 Acceso d’ira, si alzò da tavola, e non mangiò nulla il secondo giorno della luna nuova, addolorato com’era per l’offesa che suo padre aveva fatta a Davide.
35 La mattina dopo, Gionatan andò nei campi a incontrare Davide, e aveva con sé un ragazzo. 36 Disse al ragazzo: «Corri a cercare le frecce che tiro». Mentre il ragazzo correva, tirò una freccia che passò di là da lui. 37 Quando il ragazzo fu giunto al luogo dov’era la freccia che Gionatan aveva tirata, Gionatan gli gridò dietro: «La freccia non è forse di là da te?» 38 Gionatan gridò ancora dietro al ragazzo: «Via, fa’ presto, non ti trattenere!» Il ragazzo raccolse le frecce e tornò dal suo padrone. 39 Or il ragazzo non sapeva nulla; Gionatan e Davide erano i soli a sapere di che si trattava. 40 Gionatan diede le sue armi al ragazzo e gli disse: «Va’, portale in città». 41 E come il ragazzo se ne fu andato, Davide si alzò dal lato sud, si gettò con la faccia a terra e si prostrò tre volte; poi i due si baciarono e piansero insieme; Davide soprattutto pianse a dirotto. 42 Gionatan disse a Davide: «Va’ in pace, ora che abbiamo fatto tutti e due questo giuramento nel nome del Signore. Il Signore sia testimone fra me e te, e fra la mia e la tua discendenza, per sempre». 43 Davide si alzò e se ne andò, e Gionatan tornò in città.

2 And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.
3 And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.
4 Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.
5 And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.
6 If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.
7 If he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.
8 Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the Lord with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?
9 And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?
10 Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee roughly?
11 And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.
12 And Jonathan said unto David, O Lord God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and shew it thee;
13 The Lord do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil, then I will shew it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the Lord be with thee, as he hath been with my father.
14 And thou shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of the Lord, that I die not:
15 But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the Lord hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.
16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the Lord even require it at the hand of David's enemies.
17 And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
18 Then Jonathan said to David, To morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.
19 And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.
20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.
21 And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; as the Lord liveth.
22 But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the Lord hath sent thee away.
23 And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the Lord be between thee and me for ever.
24 So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat.
25 And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty.
26 Nevertheless Saul spake not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.
27 And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?
28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem:
29 And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king's table.
30 Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?
31 For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.
32 And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?
33 And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.
34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.
35 And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.
36 And he said unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
37 And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?
38 And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.
39 But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.
40 And Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.
41 And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.
42 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, The Lord be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.

Jonathan’s Loyalty to David
20 Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and went and said to Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity, and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”
2 So Jonathan said to him, “By no means! You shall not die! Indeed, my father will do nothing either great or small without first telling me. And why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so!”
3 Then David took an oath again, and said, “Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But (A)truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”
4 So Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you yourself desire, I will do it for you.”
5 And David said to Jonathan, “Indeed tomorrow is the (B)New Moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king to eat. But let me go, that I may (C)hide in the field until the third day at evening. 6 If your father misses me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked permission of me that he might run over (D)to Bethlehem, his city, for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.’ 7 (E)If he says thus: ‘It is well,’ your servant will be safe. But if he is very angry, be sure that (F)evil is determined by him. 8 Therefore you shall (G)deal kindly with your servant, for (H)you have brought your servant into a covenant of the Lord with you. Nevertheless, (I)if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?”
9 But Jonathan said, “Far be it from you! For if I knew certainly that evil was determined by my father to come upon you, then would I not tell you?”
10 Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me, or what if your father answers you roughly?”
11 And Jonathan said to David, “Come, let us go out into the field.” So both of them went out into the field. 12 Then Jonathan said to David: “The Lord God of Israel is witness! When I have [a]sounded out my father sometime tomorrow, or the third day, and indeed there is good toward David, and I do not send to you and tell you, 13 may (J)the Lord do so and much more to Jonathan. But if it pleases my father to do you evil, then I will report it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. And (K)the Lord be with you as He has (L)been with my father. 14 And you shall not only show me the kindness of the Lord while I still live, that I may not die; 15 but (M)you shall not [b]cut off your kindness from my [c]house forever, no, not when the Lord has cut off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.” 16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the [d]house of David, saying, (N)“Let the Lord require it at the hand of David’s enemies.”
17 Now Jonathan again caused David to vow, because he loved him; (O)for he loved him as he loved his own soul. 18 Then Jonathan said to David, (P)“Tomorrow is the New Moon; and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty. 19 And when you have stayed three days, go down quickly and come to (Q)the place where you hid on the day of the deed; and remain by the stone Ezel. 20 Then I will shoot three arrows to the side, as though I shot at a target; 21 and there I will send a lad, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I expressly say to the lad, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; get them and come’—then, (R)as the Lord lives, there is safety for you and no harm. 22 But if I say thus to the young man, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you’—go your way, for the Lord has sent you away. 23 And as for (S)the matter which you and I have spoken of, indeed the Lord be between you and me forever.”
24 Then David hid in the field. And when the New Moon had come, the king sat down to eat the feast. 25 Now the king sat on his seat, as at other times, on a seat by the wall. And [e]Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul’s side, but David’s place was empty. 26 Nevertheless Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought, “Something has happened to him; he is unclean, surely he is (T)unclean.” 27 And it happened the next day, the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why has the son of Jesse not come to eat, either yesterday or today?”
28 So Jonathan (U)answered Saul, “David earnestly asked permission of me to go to Bethlehem. 29 And he said, ‘Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. And now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me get away and see my brothers.’ Therefore he has not come to the king’s table.”
30 Then Saul’s anger was aroused against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness? 31 For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Now therefore, send and bring him to me, for he [f]shall surely die.”
32 And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, (V)“Why should he be killed? What has he done?” 33 Then Saul (W)cast a spear at him to [g]kill him, (X)by which Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to kill David.
34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had treated him shamefully.
35 And so it was, in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad was with him. 36 Then he said to his lad, “Now run, find the arrows which I shoot.” As the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. 37 When the lad had come to the place where the arrow was which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried out after the lad and said, “Is not the arrow beyond you?” 38 And Jonathan cried out after the lad, “Make haste, hurry, do not delay!” So Jonathan’s lad gathered up the arrows and came back to his master. 39 But the lad did not know anything. Only Jonathan and David knew of the matter. 40 Then Jonathan gave his [h]weapons to his lad, and said to him, “Go, carry them to the city.”
41 As soon as the lad had gone, David arose from a place toward the south, fell on his face to the ground, and bowed down three times. And they kissed one another; and they wept together, but David more so. 42 Then Jonathan said to David, (Y)“Go in peace, since we have both sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘May the Lord be between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants, forever.’ ” So he arose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.
