Hanna tackar Herren
2 Hanna bad:
”Jag fröjdar mig i Herren!
Han har återupprättat mig[a].
Nu kan jag ge svar på tal till mina fiender,
vara lycklig för att du har räddat mig.
2 Ingen är helig som Herren!
Det finns ingen annan Gud,
ingen enda klippa som vår Gud.
3 Sluta upp med ert skrytsamma och stolta tal
och era stora ord!
Herren vet allt
och han kommer att döma varje handling.
4 Krigarnas bågar är sönderbrutna,
men de som stapplade av svaghet har fått ny kraft.
5 De som förut var mätta måste nu slava för bröd,
medan de som var hungriga får mat.
Den ofruktsamma kvinnan har nu sju barn,
medan hon som hade många barn tynar bort.
6 Herren dödar
och Herren ger liv.
Han leder människor ner i dödsriket
och räddar dem därifrån.
7 Herren gör fattig och rik,
han ödmjukar och han upphöjer.
8 Han lyfter de hjälplösa och fattiga ur damm och aska.
Han behandlar dem som furstar
och låter dem sitta på hedersplatserna.
Hela jorden vilar på den grund Herren byggt.
9 Han kommer att skydda sina frommas steg,
men de onda kommer att tystas i mörkret.
Ingen ska lyckas enbart genom egen styrka.
10 De som kämpar mot Herren kommer att krossas.
Han dundrar mot dem från himlen.
Han dömer hela jorden.
11 Därefter återvände Elkana till Rama och pojken blev kvar som Herrens tjänare under prästen Eli.
Samuel i tjänst för Herren
12 Men Elis söner var onda män som inte brydde sig om Herren. 13 Vad prästerna brukade göra mot folket var att när någon offrade ett offer och när köttet tillagades, kom en prästtjänare med en treuddig köttgaffel i handen. 14 Tjänaren stötte sedan ner gaffeln i kitteln, pannan eller grytan och den bit som kom upp behöll prästen. Detta råkade alla israeliter ut för som kom till Shilo. 15 Ibland kom tjänaren till och med innan man förbränt fettet och sa: ”Ge prästen det råa köttet att steka, inte det kokta, för prästen vill inte ha kokt kött av dig utan rått.” 16 Om mannen som offrade köttet svarade: ”Först måste fettet brännas, sedan får du ta så mycket du vill”, då brukade tjänaren säga: ”Nej, ge det till mig genast, annars tar jag det med våld!” 17 Men Herren såg mycket allvarligt på denna synd eftersom prästerna behandlade offergåvorna till Herren respektlöst.
18 Samuel var Herrens tjänare trots att han bara var ett barn och han bar en linne-efod[d]. 19 Varje år sydde hans mor också en liten mantel åt honom som hon överlämnade när hon kom med sin man för det årliga offret. 20 Eli välsignade Elkana och Hanna och sa: ”Må Herren ge dig barn med denna kvinna i stället för den son hon bad om och som hon gett till Herren!” Sedan gick de hem igen. 21 Och Herren kom ihåg Hanna och gav henne ytterligare tre söner och två döttrar. Men Samuel växte upp inför Herren.
22 Eli hade nu blivit mycket gammal. När han hörde vad hans söner gjorde mot israeliterna och hur de låg med kvinnorna som tjänstgjorde vid ingången till uppenbarelsetältet, 23 sa han till sina söner: ”Varför gör ni så? Jag har hört om era onda gärningar. 24 Mina söner, det är verkligen inget gott rykte som sprids om er bland Guds folk. 25 Om en människa syndar mot en annan, kan Gud medla mellan dem. Men vem kan medla då en människa syndar mot Herren?” Men de ville inte lyssna till sin far, för Herren hade redan planerat att döda dem.
26 Under tiden växte pojken Samuel upp och var till glädje för både Gud och människor.
En gudsman besöker Eli
27 En gudsman kom till Eli och sa: ”Så säger Herren: ’Jag uppenbarade mig för din släkt redan när Israels folk var slavar i Egypten under farao. 28 Din släkt blev utvald bland alla Israels stammar till att vara mina präster, till att stiga upp på mitt altare, bränna rökelse och bära efoden[e] inför mig. Ni fick också alla israeliternas eldoffer. 29 Varför föraktar du de offer och offergåvor som förs fram till mig? Och varför har du satt dina söner före mig? Både du och dina söner har blivit feta av det bästa från allt som mitt folk Israel offrar!’
30 Därför förklarar jag, Herren, Israels Gud, att även om jag har lovat att du och din fars släkt alltid ska få tjänstgöra inför mig, kommer det inte att bli så. Jag ska ära dem som ärar mig, men jag ska förakta dem som föraktar mig. 31 Det ska komma en tid då jag gör slut på styrkan hos dig och i din familj, så att ingen i din släkt når hög ålder. 32 Du ska få se elände i min boning och hur välståndet ökar i Israel, men i din familj ska ingen få ett långt liv.[f] 33 Jag rycker dock inte bort er alla från mitt altare, men din blick ska slockna och ditt hjärta sörja. Alla dina ättlingar ska dö i förtid. 34 Som tecken på detta ska båda dina söner Hofni och Pinechas dö på en och samma dag.
35 Jag ska låta en trofast präst uppstå, en som kommer att handla efter mitt sinne och min vilja. Jag ska etablera honom och hans familj så att de för alltid ska vara präster åt min kung, den smorde. 36 Då ska alla dina ättlingar som är kvar böja sig för honom och tigga om pengar och bröd. Var och en kommer att säga: ’Var snäll och ge mig arbete bland prästerna, så att jag får tillräckligt att äta.’ ”

3 “Talk no more so very proudly;

For the Lord is the God of (J)knowledge;
And by Him actions are weighed.
4 “The(K) bows of the mighty men are broken,
And those who stumbled are girded with strength.
5 Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
And the hungry have ceased to hunger.
Even (L)the barren has borne seven,
And (M)she who has many children has become feeble.

11 Then Elkanah went to his house at Ramah. But the child [d]ministered to the Lord before Eli the priest.
The Wicked Sons of Eli
12 Now the sons of Eli were (AB)corrupt;[e] (AC)they did not know the Lord. 13 And the priests’ custom with the people was that when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fleshhook in his hand while the meat was boiling. 14 Then he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; and the priest would take for himself all that the fleshhook brought up. So they did in (AD)Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. 15 Also, before they (AE)burned the fat, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat for roasting to the priest, for he will not take boiled meat from you, but raw.”
16 And if the man said to him, “They should really burn the fat first; then you may take as much as your heart desires,” he would then answer him, “No, but you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.”
17 Therefore the sin of the young men was very great (AF)before the Lord, for men (AG)abhorred[f] the offering of the Lord.
Samuel’s Childhood Ministry
18 (AH)But Samuel ministered before the Lord, even as a child, (AI)wearing a linen ephod. 19 Moreover his mother used to make him a little robe, and bring it to him year by year when she (AJ)came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20 And Eli (AK)would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “The Lord give you descendants from this woman for the [g]loan that was (AL)given to the Lord.” Then they would go to their own home.
21 And the Lord (AM)visited[h] Hannah, so that she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the child Samuel (AN)grew before the Lord.
Prophecy Against Eli’s Household
22 Now Eli was very old; and he heard everything his sons did to all Israel, [i]and how they lay with (AO)the women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 23 So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all the people. 24 No, my sons! For it is not a good report that I hear. You make the Lord’s people transgress. 25 If one man sins against another, (AP)God[j] will judge him. But if a man (AQ)sins against the Lord, who will intercede for him?” Nevertheless they did not heed the voice of their father, (AR)because the Lord desired to kill them.
26 And the child Samuel (AS)grew in stature, and (AT)in favor both with the Lord and men.
27 Then a (AU)man of God came to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: (AV)‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house? 28 Did I not (AW)choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be My priest, to offer upon My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod before Me? And (AX)did I not give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire? 29 Why do you (AY)kick at My sacrifice and My offering which I have commanded in My (AZ)dwelling place, and honor your sons more than (BA)Me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel My people?’ 30 Therefore the Lord God of Israel says: (BB)‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: (BC)‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and (BD)those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed. 31 Behold, (BE)the days are coming that I will cut off your [k]arm and the arm of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32 And you will see an enemy in My dwelling place, despite all the good which God does for Israel. And there shall not be (BF)an old man in your house forever. 33 But any of your men whom I do not cut off from My altar shall consume your eyes and grieve your heart. And all the descendants of your house shall die in the flower of their age. 34 Now this shall be (BG)a sign to you that will come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: (BH)in one day they shall die, both of them. 35 Then (BI)I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who shall do according to what is in My heart and in My mind. (BJ)I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before (BK)My anointed forever. 36 (BL)And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and say, “Please, [l]put me in one of the priestly positions, that I may eat a piece of bread.” ’ ”

Hannah's Prayer

Eli's Worthless Sons
12 Now the sons of Eli were (V)worthless men. (W)They did not know the Lord. 13 The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, 14 and he would thrust it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. 15 Moreover, (X)before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast, for he will not accept boiled meat from you but only raw.” 16 And if the man said to him, “Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish,” he would say, “No, you must give it now, and if not, I will take it by force.” 17 Thus the sin of the young men was very great (Y)in the sight of the Lord, (Z)for the men treated the offering of the Lord with contempt.
18 (AA)Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy (AB)clothed with a linen ephod. 19 And his mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year (AC)when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20 Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “May the Lord give you children by this woman (AD)for the petition she asked of the Lord.” So then they would return to their home.
21 (AE)Indeed the Lord visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. (AF)And the boy Samuel grew in the presence of the Lord.
Eli Rebukes His Sons
22 Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who (AG)were serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 And he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people. 24 No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the Lord spreading abroad. 25 If someone sins against a man, God will mediate for him, but if someone sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?” But they would not listen to the voice of their father, (AH)for it was the will of the Lord to put them to death.
26 Now the boy Samuel (AI)continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man.
The Lord Rejects Eli's Household
27 And there came (AJ)a man of God to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, (AK)‘Did I indeed reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh? 28 (AL)Did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, (AM)to wear an ephod before me? (AN)I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. 29 Why then do you (AO)scorn[b] my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded for my dwelling, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’ 30 Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: (AP)‘I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,’ (AQ)but now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 31 Behold, (AR)the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father's house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32 Then (AS)in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity that shall be bestowed on Israel, (AT)and there shall not be an old man in your house forever. 33 The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep his[c] eyes out to grieve his heart, and all the descendants[d] of your house shall die by the sword of men.[e] 34 (AU)And this that shall come upon your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die (AV)on the same day. 35 (AW)And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. 2 (A) Hanna bad och sade:

mot mina fiender,
för jag gläder mig i din frälsning.

för ingen finns utom dig.

3 Tala inte så högmodigt,
låt inte fräcka ord komma
från er mun,
för Herren är en Gud som vet allt,
och hos honom vägs gärningarna.
4 Hjältarnas bågar är brutna,
men de stapplande rustar sig
med kraft.
5 (C) De mätta måste tjäna för bröd,
men de hungriga hungrar inte mer.
Den ofruktsamma föder sju barn,
men den som fick många söner

11 Elkana gick hem igen till Rama. Men Samuel gjorde tjänst inför Herren under prästen Eli.
Elis onda söner
12 (H) Men Elis söner var onda män som inte kände Herren. 13 (I) Så här brukade prästerna göra med folket: När någon offrade ett slaktoffer, kom prästens tjänare medan köttet kokades och hade en treuddig gaffel i handen. 14 Den stack han ner i kitteln, pannan, krukan eller grytan, och allt som gaffeln fick upp tog prästen. Så gjorde de mot alla israeliter som kom dit till Shilo. 15 (J) Till och med innan man hade bränt fettet[a] kom prästens tjänare och sade till den som offrade: ”Ge hit kött att steka åt prästen, för han vill inte ha kokt kött av dig utan rått.” 16 Om mannen då sade till honom: ”Låt dem först bränna fettet, sedan kan du ta vad du vill”, så svarade han: ”Nej, ge mig det nu, annars tar jag det med våld!” 17 De unga männens synd var mycket stor inför Herren, eftersom folket kom att förakta[b] Herrens offer.
Samuel i Shilo
18 (K) Samuel gjorde tjänst inför Herrens ansikte och var redan som pojke klädd i linne-efod[c]. 19 Dessutom brukade hans mor varje år göra honom en liten kåpa, som hon hade med sig när hon kom upp med sin man för att offra det årliga slaktoffret. 20 Då brukade Eli välsigna Elkana och hans hustru och säga: ”Må Herren ge dig fler barn med denna kvinna i stället för det som hon fick som bönesvar när hon bad till Herren.” Så gick de hem igen.
21 Herren såg till Hanna och hon blev havande och födde tre söner och två döttrar. Men pojken Samuel växte upp inför Herren.
22 (L) Eli var nu mycket gammal. När han fick höra allt som hans söner gjorde mot hela Israel och att de låg med kvinnorna som tjänstgjorde[d] vid ingången till uppenbarelsetältet, 23 sade han till dem: ”Varför gör ni sådant? Jag hör från allt folket här hur illa ni handlar. 24 Gör inte så, mina söner! Det är inget gott rykte jag hör, det som sprids bland Herrens folk. 25 (M) Om en människa syndar mot en annan människa kan Gud medla för henne. Men om en människa syndar mot Herren, vem kan då medla för henne?” Men de lyssnade inte till sin far, för det var Herrens vilja att döda dem.
26 (N) Och pojken Samuel växte och blev stor och var till glädje för både Herren och människor.
Domsord över Eli
27 En gudsman kom till Eli och sade till honom: ”Så säger Herren: Uppenbarade jag mig inte för din fars hus när de var i Egypten och tjänade faraos hus? 28 Jag utvalde honom bland Israels alla stammar till präst åt mig, till att offra på mitt altare och tända rökelse och bära efod inför mitt ansikte. Och jag gav din fars hus Israels barns alla eldsoffer. 29 Varför föraktar ni då mina slaktoffer och matoffer som jag har fastställt i min boning? Hur kan du ära dina söner mer än mig, så att ni göder er själva med det bästa av varje offergåva från mitt folk Israel?
30 (O) Därför säger Herren, Israels Gud: Jag har sagt att ditt hus och din fars hus skulle få vandra inför mig för all framtid, men nu säger Herren: Aldrig! Jag ska ära dem som ärar mig, men de som föraktar mig ska bli föraktade. 31 Se, dagar ska komma då jag hugger av din arm och din fars hus arm så att ingen ska bli gammal i ditt hus. 32 Du ska få se min boning lida nöd trots allt det goda som sker med Israel. Ingen ska någonsin bli gammal i ditt hus. 33 Den man av din släkt som jag inte utrotar från mitt altare ska få[e] dina ögon att slockna och bli till sorg för din själ. Och alla som växer upp i ditt hus ska dö i sina bästa år[f]. 34 (P) Och detta är tecknet för dig, det som kommer att drabba dina båda söner Hofni och Pinehas: På en och samma dag ska båda dö.
35 (Q) Men jag ska låta en trogen präst träda fram åt mig. Han ska göra det som är i mitt hjärta och min själ. Åt honom ska jag bygga ett hus på fast grund, och han ska ständigt vandra inför min smorde[g]. 36 Och var och en som är kvar av ditt hus ska komma och falla ner inför honom för att få ett silvermynt eller en brödkaka och säga: Anställ mig för någon prästsyssla så att jag får en bit bröd att äta.”

Hannah’s Prayer
2 Then Hannah prayed and said:(A)
“My heart rejoices(B) in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn[a](C) is lifted high.
My mouth boasts(D) over my enemies,(E)
for I delight in your deliverance.
2 “There is no one holy(F) like(G) the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock(H) like our God.
3 “Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,(I)
for the Lord is a God who knows,(J)
and by him deeds(K) are weighed.(L)
4 “The bows of the warriors are broken,(M)
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.(N)
5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry(O) are hungry no more.
She who was barren(P) has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.
6 “The Lord brings death and makes alive;(Q)
he brings down to the grave and raises up.(R)
7 The Lord sends poverty and wealth;(S)
he humbles and he exalts.(T)
8 He raises(U) the poor(V) from the dust(W)
and lifts the needy(X) from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes

“For the foundations(Z) of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.

but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.(AC)
“It is not by strength(AD) that one prevails;
10 those who oppose the Lord will be broken.(AE)
The Most High will thunder(AF) from heaven;
the Lord will judge(AG) the ends of the earth.
11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah,(AJ) but the boy ministered(AK) before the Lord under Eli the priest.
Eli’s Wicked Sons
12 Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard(AL) for the Lord. 13 Now it was the practice(AM) of the priests that, whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand while the meat(AN) was being boiled 14 and would plunge the fork into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. 15 But even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the person who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast; he won’t accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
16 If the person said to him, “Let the fat(AO) be burned first, and then take whatever you want,” the servant would answer, “No, hand it over now; if you don’t, I’ll take it by force.”
17 This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they[b] were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt.(AP)
18 But Samuel was ministering(AQ) before the Lord—a boy wearing a linen ephod.(AR) 19 Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual(AS) sacrifice. 20 Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed(AT) for and gave to[c] the Lord.” Then they would go home. 21 And the Lord was gracious to Hannah;(AU) she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew(AV) up in the presence of the Lord.
22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything(AW) his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women(AX) who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24 No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If one person sins against another, God[d] may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will(AY) intercede(AZ) for them?” His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.
26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow(BA) in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.(BB)
Prophecy Against the House of Eli
27 Now a man of God(BC) came to Eli and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? 28 I chose(BD) your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense,(BE) and to wear an ephod(BF) in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings(BG) presented by the Israelites. 29 Why do you[e] scorn my sacrifice and offering(BH) that I prescribed for my dwelling?(BI) Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’
30 “Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.(BJ)’ But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor,(BK) but those who despise(BL) me will be disdained.(BM) 31 The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,(BN) 32 and you will see distress(BO) in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no one in your family line will ever reach old age.(BP) 33 Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants(BQ) will die in the prime of life.
34 “‘And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign(BR) to you—they will both die(BS) on the same day.(BT) 35 I will raise up for myself a faithful priest,(BU) who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed(BV) one always. 36 Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead,(BW) “Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat.(BX)”’”
