David och Goljat
Goljat utmanar Israel
17 Filistéerna gjorde sin armé klar för strid och samlades i Soko i Juda. De slog läger mellan Soko och Aseka vid Efes Dammim. 2 Saul och israeliterna samlade också sina styrkor och lät dem slå läger i Terebintdalen för att strida mot filistéerna. 3 Filistéerna och israeliterna befann sig uppe på varsin kulle, det var bara dalen som skilde dem åt.
4 Då steg Goljat fram, en filistéisk tvekampskämpe från Gat. Han var över 3 meter lång. 5 Han hade en bronshjälm, ett harnesk med bronsfjäll som vägde 60 kilo, 6 benskydd av brons och ett spjut av brons som han bar på ryggen. 7 Skaftet på hans spjut var tjockt som en vävbom[a] och dess spets av järn vägde sju kilo. Framför honom gick hans sköldbärare. 8 Goljat stod och skrek till israeliterna på andra sidan: ”Varför har ni ställt upp er till strid? Jag är ju en filisté och ni är Sauls tjänare. Välj ut en man och skicka honom ner till mig! 9 Om han kan döda mig, ska vi bli era slavar! Men om jag dödar honom måste ni bli våra slavar! 10 Jag utmanar Israels armé! Har ni någon som vågar strida mot mig?” 11 Men när Saul och den israelitiska armén hörde detta, blev de livrädda och tappade helt modet.
12 David var son till den nu mycket gamle efratiten Jishaj från Betlehem i Juda som hade åtta söner. 13 De tre äldsta hade följt Saul ut i kriget. Den förstfödde sonen var Eliav, den andre Avinadav och den tredje Shamma. 14 David var den yngste. De tre äldsta hade följt Saul. 15 David däremot återvände ofta till Betlehem från sin tjänst hos Saul för valla sin fars får. 16 Under fyrtio dagar steg filistén fram och ställde sig där, både morgon och kväll.
17 Men en dag sa Jishaj till David: ”Skynda dig till dina bröder i lägret och ta med dig en säck rostade ax och dessa tio bröd! 18 Ta också de här tio ostarna och ge dem till befälhavaren. Se efter hur dina bröder har det och ta med dig något tillbaka som en hälsning från dem! 19 De är med Saul och den israelitiska armén i Terebintdalen och kämpar mot filistéerna.”
20 Tidigt nästa morgon lämnade David fåren till en annan herde, packade sin utrustning och gav sig i väg, så som Jishaj hade sagt. Han kom fram till lägret precis när den israelitiska armén gjorde sig klar att gå till slagfältet under höga stridsrop, 21 och israeliter och filistéer stod snart uppställda mot varandra. 22 David lämnade då sin packning i förvar hos den officer som var ansvarig för förråden och skyndade sig till trupperna och hälsade på sina bröder. 23 Medan han pratade med dem, steg den filisteiske tvekampskämpen Goljat från Gat fram ur de filistéiska leden och ropade ut sin utmaning och David hörde det. 24 När israeliterna såg honom, flydde de alla förskräckta sin väg.
25 ”Har du sett mannen som kommer fram gång på gång?” frågade soldaterna. ”Han har hånat Israel. Kungen har erbjudit en stor belöning till den som kan döda honom. Han tänker ge honom stora rikedomar, låta honom få gifta sig med en av hans döttrar och låta hela hans familj slippa betala skatt.”
26 David frågade då några andra som stod där: ”Vad får den man som dödar den där filistén och gör slut på hans hån mot Israel? Hur kan denne oomskurne filisté få håna den levande Gudens armé?” 27 Och han fick åter samma svar om belöningen för den som dödade filistén.
28 Men när Davids äldste bror Eliav hörde David tala med männen, blev han arg. ”Vad gör du här egentligen?” sa han. ”Till vem har du lämnat din lilla fårhjord i öknen? Jag vet hur elak och stöddig du är! Du är säkert bara här för att se på striden!”
29 ”Vad har jag nu gjort?” invände David. ”Jag frågade ju bara!” 30 Sedan lämnade han honom och gick till några andra, frågade samma sak och fick samma svar. 31 Snart hade också Saul fått reda på vad David sagt och han skickade genast efter honom.
David dödar Goljat
32 ”Var inte orolig, herre”, sa David till Saul. ”Jag, din tjänare ska gå och strida mot den där filistén!”
33 ”Det klarar du inte”, svarade Saul. ”Hur skulle du kunna strida mot denne filisté? Du är ju bara en pojke och han har varit en krigare sedan han var ung!”
34 Men David stod på sig och sa: ”När jag, din tjänare, vaktade min fars får och det kom fram ett lejon eller en björn som tog ett djur från flocken, 35 följde jag efter rovdjuret, slog ner det och ryckte bytet ur dess käftar. Om det vände sig mot mig, grep jag det i pälsen och slog ihjäl det. 36 Jag, din tjänare, har dödat både lejon och björn och jag ska göra likadant med den där oomskurne filistén, eftersom han har smädat den levande Gudens armé! 37 Herren, som räddat mig från både lejon och björn, ska rädda mig också undan denne filisté!”
”Gå!” sa Saul till honom. ”Herren ska vara med dig!” 38 Och så satte han på David sina egna kläder, en bronshjälm och ett harnesk. 39 David spände sedan fast svärdet utanpå rustningen och försökte gå eftersom han aldrig prövat detta tidigare.
”Jag kan ju inte röra mig i dessa! Sådant här är jag inte van vid”, sa han och tog av sig rustningen. 40 Istället tog han sin stav, plockade fem släta stenar från en bäck och lade dem i sin herdeväska och med sin slunga i handen gick han sedan för att möta filistéen.
41 Goljat kom allt närmare och hans sköldbärare gick framför honom. 42 Men när Goljat fick syn på David, föraktade han den unge och rödkindade pojken. 43 ”Tror du att jag är en hund eftersom du kommer mot mig med en käpp?” sa han till David. Sedan förbannade han David i sina gudars namn. 44 Och han sa: ”Kom hit, så ska jag ge ditt kött till fåglarna och de vilda djuren!”
45 ”Du kommer emot mig med svärd och spjut och lans”, sa David till filistén, ”men jag kommer emot dig i härskarornas Herres namn, hans som är Israels armés Gud, den Gud som du har hånat! 46 I dag kommer Herren att överlämna dig åt mig och jag ska döda dig och hugga huvudet av dig! Sedan ska jag ge filistéernas döda kroppar till fåglarna och de vilda djuren och hela världen ska veta att det finns en Gud i Israel! 47 Alla som är församlade här kommer att förstå att Herren inte räddar genom svärd och spjut. Det är Herren som avgör striden och han kommer att överlämna er åt oss!”
48 Medan Goljat närmade sig, sprang David ut för att möta honom. 49 Snabbt stack han ner handen i sin herdeväska och tog fram en sten och sköt i väg den med slungan. Stenen träffade filistén i pannan och trängde djupt in och Goljat stupade med ansiktet mot marken. 50 David besegrade alltså den filisteiske jätten med bara en slunga och en sten, utan svärd. 51 David sprang sedan fram, ställde sig över filistén och drog hans svärd ur skidan. Med det dödade han honom och sedan högg han huvudet av honom.
Israeliterna jagar den filistéiska armén på flykten
När filistéerna såg att deras hjälte hade fallit, vände de om och flydde. 52 Samtidigt gav israeliterna upp ett härskri och rusade efter filistéerna och jagade dem ända bort till Gat och Ekrons portar. Kropparna av dödade och sårade filistéer låg utströdda längs hela Shaarajimvägen till Gat och Ekron. 53 Därefter återvände den israelitiska armén och plundrade deras läger.
54 David tog Goljats huvud och förde det till Jerusalem, men hans vapen lade han i sitt tält.
55 När Saul såg David gå ut för att strida mot Goljat, hade han frågat sin härförare Avner: ”Vem är den där unge mannens far?” ”Det vet jag verkligen inte, min konung”, svarade Avner. 56 ”Ta reda på det åt mig!” sa kungen. 57 Och när David återvände efter att ha dödat filistén och fortfarande bar på Goljats avhuggna huvud, fick Avner tag i honom och tog honom med sig till Saul.
58 ”Vems son är du, unge man?” frågade Saul. David svarade: ”Jag är son till din tjänare Jishaj i Betlehem.”

17 Men filistéerna församlade sina härar till strid; de församlade sig vid det Soko som hör till Juda. Och de lägrade sig mellan Soko och Aseka, vid Efes-Dammim.
2 Saul och Israels män hade ock församlat sig och lägrat sig i Terebintdalen; och de ställde upp sig till strid mot filistéerna.
3 Filistéerna stodo vid berget på ena sidan, och israeliterna stodo vid berget på andra sidan, så att de hade dalen emellan sig.
4 Då framträdde ur filistéernas skaror en envigeskämpe vid namn Goljat, från Gat; han var sex alnar och ett kvarter lång.
5 Han hade en kopparhjälm på sitt huvud och var klädd i ett fjällpansar, och hans pansar hade en vikt av fem tusen siklar koppar.
6 Och han hade benskenor av koppar och bar en lans av koppar på sin rygg.
7 Skaftet på hans spjut liknade en vävbom, och spetsen på spjutet höll sex hundra siklar järn. Och hans sköldbärare gick framför honom.
8 Han trädde nu fram och ropade till Israels här och sade till dem: »Varför dragen I ut och ställen upp eder till strid? Jag står här på filistéernas vägnar, och I ären Sauls tjänare; väljen nu ut åt eder en man som må komma hitned till mig.
9 Om han förmår strida mot mig och slår ned mig, så skola vi vara eder underdåniga; men om jag bliver hans överman och slår ned honom, så skolen I vara oss underdåniga och tjäna oss.»
10 Och filistéen sade ytterligare: »Jag har i dag smädat Israels här. Skaffen nu hit någon, så att vi få strida med varandra!
11 Då Saul och hela Israel hörde dessa filistéens ord, blevo de gripna av förfäran och stor fruktan.
12 Men David var son till den omtalade efratiten från Bet-Lehem i Juda, som hette Isai och hade åtta söner; denne var på Sauls tid en gammal man vid framskriden ålder.
13 Nu hade Isais tre äldsta söner dragit åstad och följt med Saul ut i kriget. Av dessa hans tre söner, som hade dragit ut i kriget, hette den förstfödde Eliab, hans andre son Abinadab och den tredje Samma.
14 David var den yngste. De tre äldsta hade nu följt med Saul.
15 Men David lämnade understundom Saul och gick hem för att vakta sin faders får i Bet-Lehem.
16 Och filistéen kom fram både bittida och sent; i fyrtio dagar kom han och ställde sig där.
17 Nu sade Isai en gång till sin son David: »Tag för dina bröders räkning en efa av dessa rostade ax jämte dessa tio bröd, och skaffa detta skyndsamt till dina bröder i lägret.
18 Och dessa tio ostar skall du föra till deras överhövitsman. Du skall se efter, om det står väl till med dina bröder, och begära av dem en mottagningspant.
19 Saul och de och alla Israels män äro nämligen i Terebintdalen och strida mot filistéerna.»
20 Bittida följande morgon överlämnade David fåren åt en vaktare, tog med sig vad han skulle och begav sig åstad, såsom Isai hade bjudit honom. När han kom fram till vagnborgen, hov hären, som då skulle draga ut i slagordning, upp sitt härskri.
21 Och Israel och filistéerna ställde upp sig i slagordning mot varandra.
22 Då lämnade David ifrån sig sakerna åt trossvaktaren och skyndade bort till hären; och när han kom dit, hälsade han sina bröder.
23 Under det att han talade med dem, trädde nu envigeskämpen, han som hette Goljat, filistéen ifrån Gat, fram ur filistéernas här och talade såsom förut; och David hörde det.
24 Och alla Israels män flydde för mannen, när de fingo se honom och fruktade storligen.
25 Och Israels män sade: »Sen I mannen där, som nu träder upp? Han träder upp för att smäda Israel. Men den man som slår ned honom vill konungen begåva med stor rikedom, och åt honom vill han giva sin dotter, och hans faders hus vill han göra skattefritt i Israel.»
26 Och David sade till de man som stodo bredvid honom: »Vad får den man som slår ned denne filisté och därmed tager bort sådan smälek från Israel? Ty vem är denne oomskurne filisté, som vågar smäda den levande Gudens här?»
27 Folket upprepade då för honom det som nyss hade blivit sagt; de sade: »Detta får den man som slår ned honom.»
28 Men Eliab, hans äldste broder, hörde huru han talade med männen; då upptändes Eliabs vrede mot David, och han sade: »Varför har du kommit hitned, och åt vem har du överlämnat den lilla fårhjorden där i öknen? Jag känner ditt övermod och ditt hjärtas ondska; för att se på striden är det som du har kommit hitned.»
29 David svarade: »Vad har jag då gjort? Det var ju allenast en fråga.»
30 Sedan vände han sig ifrån honom till en annan och upprepade sin fråga, och folket gav honom samma svar som förut.
31 Men vad David hade talat blev bekant; och man berättade det för Saul, och denne lät hämta honom.
32 Och David sade till Saul: »Må ingen låta sitt mod falla. Din tjänare vill gå åstad och strida mot denne filisté.»
33 Saul sade till David: »Icke kan du gå åstad mot denne filisté och strida mot honom; du är du ju allenast en yngling, och han är en stridsman allt ifrån ungdomen.»
34 Men David svarade Saul: »Din tjänare har gått i vall med sin faders får; om då ett lejon eller en björn kom och tog bort ett får av hjorden,
35 så följde jag efter vilddjuret och slog ned det och ryckte rovet ur munnen på det; och om det då reste sig upp mot mig, så fattade jag det i skägget och slog ned det och dödade det.
36 Har nu din tjänare slagit ned både lejon och björn, så skall det gå denne oomskurne filisté såsom det gick vart och ett av dessa djur, ty han har smädat den levande Gudens här.»
37 Och David sade ytterligare: »HERREN, som räddade mig undan lejon och björn, han skall ock rädda mig undan denne filisté.» Då sade Saul till David: »Gå då åstad; HERREN skall vara med dig.»
38 Och Saul klädde på David sina egna kläder och satte en kopparhjälm på hans huvud och klädde på honom ett pansar.
39 Och David omgjordade sig med hans svärd utanpå kläderna och prövade på att gå därmed, ty han hade aldrig försökt något sådant. Och David sade till Saul: »Jag kan icke gå så klädd, ty jag har aldrig försökt sådant.» Därpå lade David det av sig.
40 Och han tog sin stav i handen och valde ut åt sig fem släta stenar ur bäcken och lade dem i sin herdeväska och i barmen, och tog sin slunga i handen; därefter gick han fram mot filistéen.
41 Och filistéen gick framåt och kom David allt närmare, och hans sköld bärare gick framför honom.
42 Då nu filistéen såg upp och fick se David, föraktade han honom; ty denne var ännu en yngling, ljuslätt och skön.
43 Och filistéen sade till David: »Menar du att jag är en hund, eftersom du kommer emot mig med käppar?» Och filistéen förbannade David, i det han svor vid sina gudar.
44 Sedan sade filistéen till David: »Kom hit till mig, så skall jag giva ditt kött åt himmelens fåglar och åt markens djur.»
45 David svarade filistéen: »Du kommer mot mig med svärd och spjut och lans, men jag kommer mot dig i HERREN Sebaots namn, hans som är Israels härs Gud, den härs som du har smädat.
46 HERREN skall denna dag överlämna dig i min hand, så att jag skall slå ned dig och taga ditt huvud av dig, och jag skall denna dag giva de filisteiska krigarnas döda kroppar åt himmelens fåglar och åt jordens vilda djur; så skola alla länder förnimma att Israel har en Gud.
47 Och hela denna hop skall förnimma att det icke är genom svärd och spjut som HERREN giver seger; ty striden är HERRENS, och han skall giva eder i vår hand.»
48 När då filistéen gjorde sig redo och gick framåt och närmade sig David, sprang David med hast fram mot hären, filistéen till mötes.
49 Och David stack sin hand i väskan och tog därur en sten och slungade och träffade filistéen i pannan; och stenen trängde in i pannan, så att han föll omkull med ansiktet mot jorden.
50 Så övervann David filistéen med slunga och sten och slog filistéen till döds,
51 utan att David därvid hade något svärd i sin hand. Sedan sprang David fram och ställde sig invid filistéen och fattade i hans svärd; och när han hade dragit det ut ur skidan, gav han honom dödsstöten och högg av hans huvud därmed. När filistéerna nu sågo att deras kämpe var död, flydde de.
52 Men Israels och Juda man stodo upp och höjde ett härskri och förföljde filistéerna ända dit där vägen går till Gai, och ända intill Ekrons portar; och filistéer föllo och lågo slagna på vägen till Saaraim, och sedan ända till Gat och ända till Ekron.
53 Sedan Israels barn sålunda häftigt hade förföljt filistéerna, vände de tillbaka och plundrade deras läger.
54 Och David tog filistéens huvud och förde det till Jerusalem, men hans vapen lade han i sitt tält.
55 När Saul såg David gå ut mot filistéen, frågade han härhövitsmannen Abner: »Vems son är denne yngling, Abner?» Abner svarade: »Så sant du lever, konung, jag vet det icke.»
56 Då sade konungen: »Hör då efter, vems son den unge mannen är.»
57 När sedan David vände tillbaka, efter att hava slagit ihjäl filistéen, tog Abner honom med sig och förde honom inför Saul, medan han ännu hade filistéens huvud i sin hand.
58 Då sade Saul till honom: »Vems son är du, yngling» David svarade: »Din tjänare Isais, betlehemitens, son.»

Chapter 17
The Challenge of Goliath. 1 The Philistines rallied their forces for battle at Socoh in Judah and camped between Socoh and Azekah at Ephes-dammim. 2 Saul and the Israelites rallied and camped in the valley of the Elah, drawing up their battle line to meet the Philistines. 3 The Philistines were stationed on one hill and the Israelites on an opposite hill, with a valley between them.
4 A champion named Goliath of Gath came out from the Philistine camp; he was six cubits and a span[a] tall. 5 He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a bronze breastplate of scale armor weighing five thousand shekels, 6 bronze greaves, and had a bronze scimitar slung from his shoulders. 7 The shaft of his javelin was like a weaver’s beam, and its iron head weighed six hundred shekels.[b] His shield-bearer went ahead of him.(A) 8 He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel: “Why come out in battle formation? I am a Philistine, and you are Saul’s servants. Choose one of your men, and have him come down to me. 9 If he beats me in combat and kills me, we will be your vassals; but if I beat him and kill him, you shall be our vassals and serve us.” 10 The Philistine continued: “I defy the ranks of Israel today. Give me a man and let us fight together.” 11 When Saul and all Israel heard this challenge of the Philistine, they were stunned and terrified.
David Comes to the Camp.[c] 12 David was the son of an Ephrathite named Jesse from Bethlehem in Judah who had eight sons. In the days of Saul Jesse was old and well on in years.(B) 13 The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to war; the names of these three sons who had gone off to war were Eliab the firstborn; Abinadab the second; and Shammah the third. 14 David was the youngest. While the three oldest had joined Saul, 15 David would come and go from Saul’s presence to tend his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.(C)
16 Meanwhile the Philistine came forward and took his stand morning and evening for forty days.
17 Now Jesse said to his son David: “Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves for your brothers, and bring them quickly to your brothers in the camp. 18 Also take these ten cheeses for the field officer. Greet your brothers and bring home some token from them. 19 Saul and your brothers, together with all Israel, are at war with the Philistines in the valley of the Elah.” 20 Early the next morning, having left the flock with a shepherd, David packed up and set out, as Jesse had commanded him. He reached the barricade of the camp just as the army, on their way to the battleground, were shouting their battle cry.(D) 21 The Israelites and the Philistines drew up opposite each other in battle array. 22 David entrusted what he had brought to the keeper of the baggage and hastened to the battle line, where he greeted his brothers.(E) 23 While he was talking with them, the Philistine champion, by name Goliath of Gath, came up from the ranks of the Philistines and spoke as before, and David listened. 24 When the Israelites saw the man, they all retreated before him, terrified. 25 The Israelites had been saying: “Do you see this man coming up? He comes up to insult Israel. The king will make whoever kills him a very wealthy man. He will give his daughter to him and declare his father’s family exempt from taxes in Israel.”(F) 26 David now said to the men standing near him: “How will the man who kills this Philistine and frees Israel from disgrace be rewarded? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should insult the armies of the living God?”(G) 27 They repeated the same words to him and said, “That is how the man who kills him will be rewarded.” 28 When Eliab, his oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he grew angry with David and said: “Why did you come down? With whom have you left those sheep in the wilderness? I know your arrogance and dishonest heart. You came down to enjoy the battle!”(H) 29 David protested, “What have I done now? I was only talking.” 30 He turned from him to another and asked the same question; and everyone gave him the same answer as before. 31 The words that David had spoken were overheard and reported to Saul, who sent for him.
David Challenges Goliath. 32 Then David spoke to Saul: “My lord should not lose heart. Let your servant go and fight this Philistine.” 33 But Saul answered David, “You cannot go up against this Philistine and fight with him, for you are only a youth, while he has been a warrior from his youth.” 34 (I)Then David told Saul: “Your servant used to tend his father’s sheep, and whenever a lion or bear came to carry off a sheep from the flock, 35 I would chase after it, attack it, and snatch the prey from its mouth. If it attacked me, I would seize it by the throat, strike it, and kill it. 36 Your servant has killed both a lion and a bear. This uncircumcised Philistine will be as one of them, because he has insulted the armies of the living God.”
37 David continued: “The same Lord who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul answered David, “Go! the Lord will be with you.”(J)
Preparation for the Encounter. 38 Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic, putting a bronze helmet on his head and arming him with a coat of mail. 39 David also fastened Saul’s sword over the tunic. He walked with difficulty, however, since he had never worn armor before. He said to Saul, “I cannot go in these, because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. 40 Then, staff in hand, David selected five smooth stones from the wadi and put them in the pocket of his shepherd’s bag. With his sling in hand, he approached the Philistine.
David’s Victory. 41 [d]With his shield-bearer marching before him, the Philistine advanced closer and closer to David. 42 When he sized David up and saw that he was youthful, ruddy, and handsome in appearance, he began to deride him. 43 He said to David, “Am I a dog that you come against me with a staff?” Then the Philistine cursed David by his gods 44 and said to him, “Come here to me, and I will feed your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field.”(K) 45 David answered him: “You come against me with sword and spear and scimitar, but I come against you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel whom you have insulted. 46 Today the Lord shall deliver you into my hand; I will strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will feed your dead body and the dead bodies of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field; thus the whole land shall learn that Israel has a God. 47 All this multitude, too, shall learn that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves. For the battle belongs to the Lord, who shall deliver you into our hands.”(L)
48 The Philistine then moved to meet David at close quarters, while David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 David put his hand into the bag and took out a stone, hurled it with the sling, and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone embedded itself in his brow, and he fell on his face to the ground. 50 Thus David triumphed over the Philistine with sling and stone; he struck the Philistine dead, and did it without a sword in his hand.(M) 51 Then David ran and stood over him; with the Philistine’s own sword which he drew from its sheath he killed him, and cut off his head.(N)
Flight of the Philistines. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they fled. 52 Then the men of Israel and Judah sprang up with a battle cry and pursued them to the approaches of Gath and to the gates of Ekron, and Philistines fell wounded along the road from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron. 53 When they returned from their pursuit of the Philistines, the Israelites looted their camp. 54 (O)David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem; but he kept Goliath’s armor in his own tent.[e]
David Presented to Saul. 55 As Saul watched David go out to meet the Philistine, he asked his general Abner, “Abner, whose son is that young man?” Abner replied, “On your life, O king, I have no idea.”(P) 56 And the king said, “Find out whose son the lad is.” 57 So when David returned from slaying the Philistine, Abner escorted him into Saul’s presence. David was still holding the Philistine’s head. 58 Saul then asked him, “Whose son are you, young man?” David replied, “I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.”

17 Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war and assembled(A) at Sokoh in Judah. They pitched camp at Ephes Dammim, between Sokoh(B) and Azekah.(C) 2 Saul and the Israelites assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah(D) and drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines. 3 The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with the valley between them.
4 A champion named Goliath,(E) who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span.[a] 5 He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels[b]; 6 on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin(F) was slung on his back. 7 His spear shaft was like a weaver’s rod,(G) and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels.[c] His shield bearer(H) went ahead of him.
8 Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose(I) a man and have him come down to me. 9 If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.” 10 Then the Philistine said, “This day I defy(J) the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.(K)” 11 On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.
12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite(L) named Jesse,(M) who was from Bethlehem(N) in Judah. Jesse had eight(O) sons, and in Saul’s time he was very old. 13 Jesse’s three oldest sons had followed Saul to the war: The firstborn was Eliab;(P) the second, Abinadab;(Q) and the third, Shammah.(R) 14 David was the youngest. The three oldest followed Saul, 15 but David went back and forth from Saul to tend(S) his father’s sheep(T) at Bethlehem.
16 For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.
17 Now Jesse said to his son David, “Take this ephah[d](U) of roasted grain(V) and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. 18 Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers(W) are and bring back some assurance[e] from them. 19 They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines.”
20 Early in the morning David left the flock in the care of a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry. 21 Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other. 22 David left his things with the keeper of supplies,(X) ran to the battle lines and asked his brothers how they were. 23 As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual(Y) defiance, and David heard it. 24 Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear.
25 Now the Israelites had been saying, “Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter(Z) in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes(AA) in Israel.”
26 David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace(AB) from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised(AC) Philistine that he should defy(AD) the armies of the living(AE) God?”
27 They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, “This is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
28 When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger(AF) at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”
29 “Now what have I done?” said David. “Can’t I even speak?” 30 He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before. 31 What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him.
32 David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart(AG) on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”
33 Saul replied,(AH) “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion(AI) or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized(AJ) it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion(AK) and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who rescued(AL) me from the paw of the lion(AM) and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with(AN) you.”
38 Then Saul dressed David in his own(AO) tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. 39 David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them.
“I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.
41 Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer(AP) in front of him, kept coming closer to David. 42 He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome,(AQ) and he despised(AR) him. 43 He said to David, “Am I a dog,(AS) that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds(AT) and the wild animals!(AU)”
45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin,(AV) but I come against you in the name(AW) of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.(AX) 46 This day the Lord will deliver(AY) you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses(AZ) of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world(BA) will know that there is a God in Israel.(BB) 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword(BC) or spear that the Lord saves;(BD) for the battle(BE) is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling(BF) and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
51 David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut(BG) off his head with the sword.(BH)
When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. 52 Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath[f] and to the gates of Ekron.(BI) Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim(BJ) road to Gath and Ekron. 53 When the Israelites returned from chasing the Philistines, they plundered their camp.
54 David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem; he put the Philistine’s weapons in his own tent.
55 As Saul watched David(BK) going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, commander of the army, “Abner,(BL) whose son is that young man?”
Abner replied, “As surely as you live, Your Majesty, I don’t know.”
56 The king said, “Find out whose son this young man is.”
57 As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with David still holding the Philistine’s head.
58 “Whose son are you, young man?” Saul asked him.
David said, “I am the son of your servant Jesse(BM) of Bethlehem.”

17 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.
2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.
6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.
8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
14 And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.
15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.
16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren;
18 And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.
19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.
21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.
22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.
23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.
24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.
25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.
26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?
30 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.
38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.
39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands.
48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.
53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.
54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
56 And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.
57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.
