16 Herren sade till Samuel: "Hur länge tänker du sörja över Saul? Jag har ju förkastat honom, så att han inte kan vara kung över Israel. Fyll ditt horn med olja och ge dig av. Jag skall sända dig till betlehemiten Isai, ty en av hans söner har jag utsett åt mig till kung." 2 Samuel svarade: "Hur skall jag kunna gå dit? Om Saul får höra det, dödar han mig." Herren svarade: "Tag med dig en kviga och säg: Jag har kommit för att offra åt Herren. 3 Sedan skall du inbjuda Isai till offret, och jag skall då låta dig veta vad du skall göra, så att du åt mig smörjer den jag visar dig."
4 Samuel gjorde som Herren sade och kom till Betlehem. Men de äldste i staden blev förskräckta när de mötte honom och frågade: "Kommer du med frid?" 5 Han svarade: "Ja, med frid. Jag har kommit för att offra åt Herren. Helga er och kom med mig till offret." Och han helgade Isai och hans söner och inbjöd dem till offret.
6 När de kom dit och han fick se Eliab, tänkte han: "Det är säkert Herrens smorde, som står här inför Herren." 7 Men Herren sade till Samuel: "Se inte på hans utseende och på hans resliga gestalt, ty jag har förkastat honom. Ty det går inte efter vad en människa ser. En människa ser det som är för ögonen, men Herren ser till hjärtat." 8 Då kallade Isai på Abinadab och lät honom gå fram inför Samuel. Men Samuel sade: "Inte heller honom har Herren utvalt." 9 Då lät Isai sin son Samma gå fram. Men Samuel sade: "Inte heller honom har Herren utvalt." 10 På detta sätt lät Isai sju av sina söner gå fram inför Samuel. Men Samuel sade till Isai: " Herren har inte utvalt någon av dessa." 11 Och han frågade honom: "Är detta alla pojkar du har?" Han svarade: "Det fattas en, den yngste, och han vaktar fåren." Då sade Samuel till Isai: "Sänd bud och hämta hit honom, för vi sätter oss inte till bords förrän han kommer hit." 12 Isai sände då bud och hämtade David. Han var rödkindad, hade vackra ögon och såg bra ut. "Stå upp och smörj honom", sade Herren, "ty han är det." 13 Då tog Samuel sitt oljehorn och smorde honom mitt ibland hans bröder. Och Herrens Ande kom över David från den dagen och framöver. Sedan steg Samuel upp och gick till Rama.
David kommer till Sauls hov
14 Men Herrens Ande vek från Saul och en ond ande från Herren plågade honom. 15 Sauls tjänare sade till honom: "Eftersom en ond ande från Gud plågar dig, 16 borde du, vår herre, säga till dina tjänare som står inför dig att de söker upp en man som är skicklig att spela harpa. När den onde anden från Gud kommer över dig, skall han spela och så skall det bli bättre med dig." 17 Då sade Saul till sina tjänare: "Se er om för min räkning efter en man som är duktig att spela och för hit honom till mig." 18 En av tjänarna svarade: " Betlehemiten Isai har en son som jag har funnit vara skicklig att spela, en djärv och duktig stridsman och en begåvad talare. Dessutom ser han bra ut och Herren är med honom."
19 Saul sände då bud till Isai och lät säga: "Sänd till mig din son David, som vaktar fåren." 20 Då tog Isai en åsna, som han lastade med bröd, vidare en vinlägel och en killing och skickade detta med sin son David till Saul. 21 Så kom David till Saul och trädde i hans tjänst och Saul tyckte så mycket om honom att han fick bära Sauls vapen. 22 Saul sände bud till Isai och lät säga: "Låt David stanna i min tjänst, för han har funnit nåd för mina ögon."
23 När så anden från Gud kom över Saul, brukade David ta harpan och spela. Då kände Saul lindring och blev bättre, och den onde anden vek ifrån honom.

16 Вечный сказал Самуилу:
– Сколько ты ещё будешь скорбеть по Шаулу? Я отверг его как царя над Исроилом. Наполни рог маслом и отправляйся в путь. Я посылаю тебя к Есею из Вифлеема. Я выбрал Себе в цари одного из его сыновей.
2 Но Самуил спросил:
– Как же я пойду? Шаул услышит об этом и убьёт меня.
Вечный ответил:
– Возьми с собой телицу и скажи: «Я пришёл, чтобы принести жертву Вечному». 3 Пригласи Есея к жертве, и Я укажу тебе, что делать. Ты должен помазать[a] Мне того, кого Я укажу.
4 Самуил сделал, как сказал Вечный. Когда он пришёл в Вифлеем, старейшины города со страхом вышли ему навстречу. Они спросили:
– Ты пришёл с миром?
5 Самуил ответил:
– Да, с миром. Я пришёл, чтобы принести жертву Вечному. Освятитесь и идите к жертве со мной.
Затем он освятил Есея и его сыновей и пригласил их к жертве. 6 Когда они пришли, Самуил увидел старшего сына Есея, Элиава, и подумал: «Конечно, это помазанник Вечного стоит здесь перед Вечным». 7 Но Вечный сказал Самуилу:
– Не смотри на его внешность и на высокий рост, потому что Я отверг его. Вечный смотрит не так, как человек. Человек смотрит на внешний вид, а Вечный смотрит на сердце.
8 Тогда Есей позвал второго сына, Авинадава, и провёл его перед Самуилом. Но Самуил сказал:
– И этого не выбрал Вечный.
9 Тогда Есей провёл третьего сына, Шамму, но Самуил сказал:
– И этого не выбрал Вечный.
10 Есей провёл перед Самуилом семерых своих сыновей, но Самуил сказал ему:
– Их тоже Вечный не выбрал.
11 Самуил спросил Есея:
– Все ли твои сыновья здесь?
– Есть ещё самый младший, – ответил Есей, – но он пасёт овец.
Самуил сказал:
– Пошли за ним и приведи его. Мы не сядем, пока он не придёт сюда.
12 Он послал за ним, и его привели. Он был румяным[b], с красивыми глазами и приятной внешностью. И Вечный сказал:
– Встань и помажь его – это он.
13 Самуил взял рог с маслом и помазал Довуда в присутствии братьев. Тогда Дух Вечного сошёл на Довуда и с того дня пребывал на нём. А Самуил вернулся в Раму.
Довуд на службе у Шаула
14 Дух Вечного отошёл от Шаула, и злой дух от Вечного овладел им.
15 Слуги Шаула сказали ему:
– Злой дух от Всевышнего овладел тобой. 16 Пусть наш господин велит своим рабам найти кого-нибудь, кто умеет играть на арфе. Он будет играть, когда этот дух будет находить на тебя, и тебе будет лучше.
17 Шаул сказал слугам:
– Найдите кого-нибудь, кто хорошо играет на арфе, и приведите его ко мне.
18 Один из его слуг ответил:
– Я видел сына Есея из Вифлеема, он умеет играть на арфе. Он храбрый человек и воин, благоразумен в речах и хорош собою. И Вечный с ним.
19 Шаул послал вестников к Есею и сказал:
– Отошли ко мне своего сына Довуда, который пасёт овец.
20 Есей взял осла, навьючил на него лепёшки, взял козлёнка и бурдюк с вином и послал всё это вместе со своим сыном Довудом к Шаулу. 21 Довуд явился к Шаулу и поступил к нему на службу. Шаул очень полюбил его, и Довуд стал одним из его оруженосцев. 22 Шаул послал сказать Есею:
– Позволь Довуду остаться у меня на службе, потому что я им доволен.
23 Всякий раз, когда дух от Всевышнего находил на Шаула, Довуд брал свою арфу и играл. Шаулу становилось лучше, и злой дух оставлял его.

16 And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
4 And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed is before him.
7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.
11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.
19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Samuel Anoints David
16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn(A) for Saul, since I have rejected(B) him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil(C) and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse(D) of Bethlehem. I have chosen(E) one of his sons to be king.”
2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”
The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show(F) you what to do. You are to anoint(G) for me the one I indicate.”
4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem,(H) the elders of the town trembled(I) when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?(J)”
5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate(K) yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab(L) and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance,(M) but the Lord looks at the heart.”(N)
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab(O) and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah(P) pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all(Q) the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”(R)
Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
12 So he(S) sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome(T) features.
Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed(U) him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord(V) came powerfully upon David.(W) Samuel then went to Ramah.
David in Saul’s Service
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed(X) from Saul, and an evil[a] spirit(Y) from the Lord tormented him.(Z)
15 Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre.(AA) He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.”
17 So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.”
18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse(AB) of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior.(AC) He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with(AD) him.”
19 Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.(AE)” 20 So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread,(AF) a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul.
21 David came to Saul and entered his service.(AG) Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers. 22 Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
23 Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit(AH) would leave him.
