David smörjs till kung
16 (A) Herren sade till Samuel: ”Hur länge tänker du sörja över Saul? Jag har förkastat honom som kung över Israel. Fyll ditt horn med olja och ge dig av. Jag ska sända dig till betlehemiten Ishai, för jag har utsett en av hans söner åt mig till kung.” 2 Samuel svarade: ”Hur ska jag kunna gå dit? Om Saul får höra det dödar han mig.” Herren svarade: ”Ta med dig en kviga och säg: Jag har kommit för att offra åt Herren. 3 Sedan ska du bjuda in Ishai till offret[a], och då ska jag låta dig veta vad du ska göra så att du smörjer åt mig den jag visar dig.”
4 Samuel gjorde som Herren sade och kom till Betlehem. Men de äldste i staden blev förskräckta när de mötte honom och frågade: ”Kommer du med frid?” 5 (B) Han svarade: ”Ja, med frid. Jag har kommit för att offra åt Herren. Helga er och kom med mig till offret.” Och han helgade Ishai och hans söner och bjöd dem till offret.
6 (C) När de kom dit och han fick se Eliab,[b] tänkte han: ”Det är säkert Herrens smorde som står här inför Herren.” 7 (D) Men Herren sade till Samuel: ”Se inte på hans yttre och hans resliga gestalt. Jag har förkastat honom, för det går inte efter vad en människa ser. En människa ser det som är för ögonen, men Herren ser till hjärtat.”
8 Då kallade Ishai på Abinadab och lät honom gå fram inför Samuel. Men Samuel sade: ”Herren har inte utvalt honom heller.” 9 Då lät Ishai sin son Shamma gå fram, men Samuel sade: ”Herren har inte utvalt honom heller.” 10 På så sätt lät Ishai sju av sina söner gå fram inför Samuel. Men Samuel sade till Ishai: ”Herren har inte utvalt någon av dem.”
11 (E) Och han frågade honom: ”Är det här alla pojkar du har?” Han svarade: ”Den yngste är kvar, men han vaktar fåren[c].” Då sade Samuel till Ishai: ”Sänd bud och hämta honom, för vi sätter oss inte förrän han kommer hit.” 12 Ishai sände då bud och hämtade David.[d] Han hade röda kinder[e] och vackra ögon och såg bra ut. ”Gå fram och smörj honom”, sade Herren, ”för han är det.”
13 (F) Då tog Samuel sitt oljehorn och smorde[f] honom mitt ibland hans bröder. Och Herrens Ande kom över David från den dagen och framöver. Sedan bröt Samuel upp och gick till Rama.
David kommer till Sauls hov
14 Men Herrens Ande vek från Saul, och han plågades av en ond[g] ande från Herren. 15 Sauls tjänare sade till honom: ”Se, en ond ande från Gud plågar dig. 16 Så vår herre bör säga till sina tjänare här inför dig att söka upp en man som kan spela[h] harpa[i]. När den onda anden från Gud kommer över dig kan han spela och så blir det bättre med dig.” 17 Då sade Saul till sina tjänare: ”Hitta åt mig en man som är skicklig att spela och för hit honom till mig.” 18 En av tjänarna svarade: ”Jag har sett att betlehemiten Ishai har en son som kan spela, en djärv och duktig stridsman och en begåvad talare. Dessutom ser han bra ut och Herren är med honom.” 19 Saul sände då bud till Ishai och lät säga: ”Skicka mig din son David som vaktar fåren.”
20 Då tog Ishai en åsna lastad med bröd, en lägel vin och en killing och skickade det med sin son David till Saul. 21 Så kom David till Saul och trädde i tjänst inför honom, och Saul tyckte så mycket om honom att han fick bära Sauls vapen. 22 Saul sände bud till Ishai och lät säga: ”Låt David stanna i min tjänst, för han har funnit nåd för mina ögon.” 23 När så anden från Gud kom över Saul brukade David ta harpan och spela. Då fick Saul lindring och blev bättre, och den onda anden lämnade honom.

- 16:16 en man som kan spela Hovmusiker var vanliga i de större rikenas kungapalats. Musik förknippades med positivt andligt inflytande (2 Kung 3:15, Ps 33:1f, 81:3).
- 16:16 harpa Annan översättning: ”lyra” (med eller utan resonanslåda bakom strängarna).

16 The Lord said to Samuel, (A)“How long will you grieve over Saul, since (B)I have rejected him from being king over Israel? (C)Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, (D)for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” 2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, (E)‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. (F)And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.” 4 Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city (G)came to meet him trembling and said, (H)“Do you come peaceably?” 5 And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. (I)Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they came, he looked on (J)Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord's anointed is before him.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, (K)“Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, (L)but the Lord looks on the heart.” 8 Then Jesse called (M)Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made (N)Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, (O)“There remains yet the youngest,[a] but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, (P)“Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was (Q)ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, (R)“Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took (S)the horn of oil (T)and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. (U)And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
David in Saul's Service
14 (V)Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, (W)and a harmful spirit from the Lord tormented him. 15 And Saul's servants said to him, “Behold now, a harmful spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord now command your servants (X)who are before you to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre, and when the harmful spirit from God is upon you, he will (Y)play it, and you will be well.” 17 So Saul said to his servants, “Provide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me.” 18 One of the young men answered, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, (Z)a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, (AA)and the Lord is with him.” 19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me David your son, (AB)who is with the sheep.” 20 (AC)And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul. 21 And David came to Saul (AD)and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer. 22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight.” 23 And (AE)whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre (AF)and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.

2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.”
But the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, (E)‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.”
4 So Samuel did what the Lord said, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town (F)trembled at his coming, and said, (G)“Do you come peaceably?”
5 And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. (H)Sanctify[b] yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.

A Distressing Spirit Troubles Saul
14 (T)But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and (U)a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him. 15 And Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you. 16 Let our master now command your servants, who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. And it shall be that he will (V)play it with his hand when the [g]distressing spirit from God is upon you, and you shall be well.”
17 So Saul said to his servants, [h]“Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”
18 Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and (W)the Lord is with him.”
19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” 20 And Jesse (X)took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by his son David to Saul. 21 So David came to Saul and (Y)stood before him.
