Saul tar krigsbyte mot Herrens vilja
15 Samuel sa till Saul: ”Det var mig som Herren sände att smörja dig till kung över Israel, så lyssna nu vad Herren säger! 2 Så säger härskarornas Herre: ’Jag ska straffa Amalek för det de gjorde mot Israel då de anföll dem på vägen från Egypten.[a] 3 Gå nu och vig hela Amaleks folk och allt de har åt förintelse. Utrota män, kvinnor, barn, ungdomar, oxar, får, kameler och åsnor!’ ” 4 Saul mobiliserade sin armé och mönstrade dem i Telaim. Han hade 200 000 soldater och dessutom 10 000 man från Juda.
5 När Saul kom till Amaleks stad, lade han sig i bakhåll i dalen. 6 Sedan skickade han bud till keniterna att dra sig bort och överge amalekiterna. ”Jag vill inte utrota er tillsammans med dem. Ni var ju vänliga mot Israels folk, när de kom från Egypten”, sa han. Keniterna drog sig då bort därifrån. 7 Sedan slog Saul amalekiterna ända från Havila och ner till Shur, öster om Egypten. 8 Han tillfångatog Agag, amalekiternas kung, men vigde alla andra åt förintelse och högg ner dem med svärd. 9 Saul och hans män skonade alltså Agag, men också det bästa av fåren och oxarna och de fetaste lammen, kort sagt allt som var värdefullt. De ville inte viga det åt förintelse, utan gjorde det bara med det som var svagt och värdelöst.
Herren förkastar Saul
10 Då kom Herrens ord till Samuel: 11 ”Jag ångrar att jag gjorde Saul till kung, för han har än en gång vänt sig bort från mig och vägrat att lyda mig.” Samuel blev djupt skakad och han ropade och bad till Herren hela natten. 12 Tidigt nästa morgon gick han ut för att leta efter Saul, men fick höra att han hade gått till berget Karmel för att resa ett monument över sig själv och att han därefter hade fortsatt till Gilgal.
13 När Samuel kom, hälsade Saul och sa: ”Herren välsigne dig! Nu har jag verkställt Herrens befallning!”
14 ”Vad är det då för ett bräkande av får och bölande av oxar jag hör?” frågade Samuel. 15 ”Mina soldater räddade det bästa av amalekiternas får och oxar”, erkände Saul, ”men det var för att offra dem till Herren, din Gud. Allt annat har vi vigt åt förintelse.”
16 Då sa Samuel till Saul: ”Sluta! Hör nu vad Herren sa till mig i natt!” ”Vad sa han?” undrade Saul.
17 Samuel svarade: ”När du själv inte tyckte att du var något, blev du ledare för Israels stammar och Herren smorde dig till kung över Israel. 18 Och han gav dig ett uppdrag och sa till dig: ’Gå och vig de syndiga amalekiterna åt förintelse. Strid mot dem tills du utplånat dem alla!’ 19 Varför lydde du inte Herren? Varför kastade du dig över krigsbytet och gjorde det som är ont i Herrens ögon?”
20 ”Men jag har lytt Herren”, svarade Saul. ”Jag gick dit han sa till mig att gå. Jag tog med mig kung Agag, men jag vigde alla de andra åt förintelse. 21 Och mina trupper behöll fåren och oxarna, det allra bästa av det som skulle vigas åt förintelse, för att offra det till Herren.”
22 Samuel svarade:
”Gläder sig Herren lika mycket åt brännoffer och slaktoffer
som att man hör Herrens röst?
Nej, lydnad är bättre än offer,
och att lyssna till honom är bättre
än att offra baggars fett åt honom.
23 Upproriskhet är en lika stor synd som spådom,
och övermod lika avigt som att tillbe avgudar.
Du har förkastat Herrens ord,
och han har förkastat dig som kung.”
Saul ber om nåd
24 ”Jag har syndat”, sa Saul till Samuel. ”Jag var olydig mot Herrens befallning och handlade inte efter dina ord, för jag var rädd för folket och gjorde vad de krävde. 25 Förlåt nu min synd och följ med mig tillbaka, så att jag kan tillbe Herren!” 26 Men Samuel svarade: ”Jag kommer inte tillbaka med dig. Eftersom du har förkastat Herrens befallning, har han också förkastat dig som kung över Israel.” 27 När Samuel sedan vände sig om för att gå, grep Saul tag i hans mantel, men då revs manteln sönder. 28 ”Se”, sa Samuel, ”Herren har ryckt Israels rike ifrån dig i dag och gett det till en av dina landsmän, till en som är bättre än du. 29 Han som är Israels härlighet ljuger inte och inte heller ångrar han sig, för han är inte en människa.”
30 Då sa Saul: ”Jag har syndat, men hedra mig åtminstone inför mitt folks äldste och Israel genom att gå med mig och tillbe Herren, din Gud!” 31 Samuel gick då med honom och Saul tillbad Herren.
32 Sedan sa Samuel: ”För hit amalekiternas kung Agag!” Agag kom darrande[b] fram men tänkte ändå: ”Dödens bitterhet är borta.” 33 Men Samuel sa:
”På samma sätt som ditt svärd har gjort många mödrar barnlösa,
ska din mor nu bli barnlös.”
Och Samuel dödade honom inför Herren i Gilgal.
34 Sedan gick Samuel hem till Rama och Saul återvände till Sauls Giva. 35 Efter den dagen träffade Samuel aldrig Saul mer, men han tänkte ofta med sorg på honom och Herren sörjde över att han hade gjort Saul till kung över Israel.

15 Самуил сказал Шаулу:
– Я тот, кого Вечный послал помазать тебя царём над народом Исроила. Выслушай же теперь слова Вечного. 2 Так говорит Вечный, Повелитель Сил: «Я накажу амаликитян за то, что они сделали Исроилу, преградив путь исроильтянам, идущим из Египта. 3 Ступай, напади на амаликитян и полностью уничтожь всё, что им принадлежит. Не щади их, предай смерти мужчин и женщин, детей и грудных младенцев, волов и овец, верблюдов и ослов».
4 Шаул призвал народ и собрал их в Телаиме – двести тысяч пеших воинов и десять тысяч воинов из рода Иуды. 5 Шаул подошёл к городу Амалика и устроил засаду в долине. 6 Он сказал кенеям:
– Уходите, оставьте амаликитян, чтобы я не истребил вас вместе с ними, ведь вы оказали милость всем исроильтянам, когда они вышли из Египта[a].
И кенеи ушли от амаликитян. 7 Шаул разбил амаликитян на всём пути от Хавилы до самого Сура, что в восточном Египте. 8 Он взял Агага, царя амаликитян, живым, а весь его народ полностью истребил мечом. 9 Но Шаул и его войско пощадили Агага. Они также оставили лучших овец и волов, жирных телят и ягнят – всё, что было ценно, они не хотели всё это уничтожать. Но всех слабых и всё плохое они уничтожили полностью.
Вечный отвергает Шаула
10 Тогда к Самуилу было слово Вечного:
11 – Я жалею, что сделал Шаула царём, потому что он отвернулся от Меня и не выполнил Моих наставлений.
Самуил разгневался на Шаула и всю ночь взывал к Вечному. 12 Рано утром Самуил встал, чтобы встретиться с Шаулом, но ему сказали:
– Шаул ушёл в город Кармил. Там он поставил себе памятник, а затем спустился в Гилгал.
13 Когда Самуил нагнал его, Шаул сказал:
– Да благословит тебя Вечный! Я выполнил наставления Вечного.
14 Но Самуил сказал:
– А почему же я тогда слышу блеяние овец и мычание волов?
15 Шаул ответил:
– Воины привели их от амаликитян. Они пощадили лучших овец и волов, чтобы принести их в жертву Вечному, твоему Богу, но всё остальное мы полностью уничтожили.
16 – Хватит, ни слова больше! – сказал Шаулу Самуил. – Я скажу тебе то, что прошлой ночью сказал мне Вечный.
– Говори, – ответил Шаул.
17 Самуил сказал:
– Не стал ли ты главой родов Исроила, хотя сам когда-то невысоко себя ставил? Вечный помазал тебя царём над Исроилом. 18 Вечный послал тебя с поручением, говоря: «Пойди и полностью истреби этот нечестивый народ – амаликитян. Веди с ними войну, пока не уничтожишь их». 19 Почему ты не послушался Вечного? Почему ты бросился на добычу и совершил зло в глазах Вечного?
20 – Но я же послушался Вечного, – сказал Шаул. – Я отправился исполнять поручение, которое дал мне Вечный. Я полностью истребил амаликитян и привёл их царя Агага. 21 Воины взяли из добычи овец и волов, лучшее из подлежащего уничтожению, чтобы принести их в жертву Вечному, твоему Богу, в Гилгале.
22 Но Самуил ответил:
– Разве всесожжения и жертвы столь же приятны Вечному,
сколь послушание голосу Вечного?
Послушание лучше жертвы,
и повиновение лучше жира баранов.
23 Ведь неповиновение подобно греху ворожбы,
и гордость – греху идолослужения.
Так как ты отверг слово Вечного,
то и Он отверг тебя как царя.
24 Тогда Шаул сказал Самуилу:
– Я согрешил. Я нарушил повеление Вечного и твои наставления. Я боялся народа и поэтому уступил им. 25 Но теперь я молю тебя, прости мой грех и вернись со мной, чтобы мне поклониться Вечному.
26 Но Самуил сказал ему:
– Я не вернусь с тобой. Ты отверг слово Вечного, и Вечный отверг тебя как царя над Исроилом!
27 Когда Самуил повернулся, чтобы уйти, Шаул схватил его за край верхней одежды, и она порвалась. 28 Самуил сказал ему:
– Сегодня Вечный вырвал у тебя царство Исроила и отдал его другому – тому, кто лучше тебя. 29 Верный Исроила не лжёт и не передумывает, ведь Он не человек, чтобы передумывать.
30 Шаул ответил:
– Я согрешил. Но, пожалуйста, окажи мне уважение перед старейшинами моего народа и перед Исроилом, вернись со мной, тогда я смогу поклониться Вечному, твоему Богу.
31 Самуил вернулся с Шаулом, и Шаул поклонился Вечному. 32 Тогда Самуил сказал:
– Приведите ко мне Агага, царя амаликитян.
Агаг подошёл к нему уверенно, думая[b]: «Конечно, горечь смерти прошла стороной». 33 Но Самуил сказал:
– Как меч твой лишал матерей их детей,
так твоя мать будет бездетной среди женщин.
И Самуил рассёк Агага на части перед Вечным в Гилгале. 34 Затем Самуил ушёл в Раму, а Шаул поднялся к себе домой, в Гиву. 35 До дня своей смерти Самуил не виделся больше с Шаулом[c], хотя и скорбел о нём. А Вечный сожалел, что сделал Шаула царём над Исроилом.

Saul Spares King Agag
15 Samuel also said to Saul, (A)“The Lord sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel. Now therefore, heed the voice of the words of the Lord. 2 Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, (B)how he ambushed him on the way when he came up from Egypt. 3 Now go and (C)attack[a] Amalek, and (D)utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”
4 So Saul gathered the people together and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah. 5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and lay in wait in the valley.
6 Then Saul said to (E)the Kenites, (F)“Go, depart, get down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For (G)you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7 (H)And Saul attacked the Amalekites, from (I)Havilah all the way to (J)Shur, which is east of Egypt. 8 (K)He also took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and (L)utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 But Saul and the people (M)spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.
Saul Rejected as King
10 Now the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying, 11 (N)“I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has (O)turned back from following Me, (P)and has not performed My commandments.” And it (Q)grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the Lord all night. 12 So when Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul, it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul went to (R)Carmel, and indeed, he set up a monument for himself; and he has gone on around, passed by, and gone down to Gilgal.” 13 Then Samuel went to Saul, and Saul said to him, (S)“Blessed are you of the Lord! I have performed the commandment of the Lord.”
14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?”
15 And Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; (T)for the people spared the best of the sheep and the oxen, to sacrifice to the Lord your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.”
16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Be quiet! And I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”
And he said to him, “Speak on.”
17 So Samuel said, (U)“When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel? 18 Now the Lord sent you on a mission, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are [b]consumed.’ 19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you swoop down on the [c]spoil, and do evil in the sight of the Lord?”
20 And Saul said to Samuel, (V)“But I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21 (W)But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”
22 So Samuel said:
(X)“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
As in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, (Y)to obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of [d]witchcraft,
And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
(Z)He also has rejected you from being king.”
24 (AA)Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I (AB)feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the Lord.”
26 But Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you, (AC)for you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”
27 And as Samuel turned around to go away, (AD)Saul seized the edge of his robe, and it tore. 28 So Samuel said to him, (AE)“The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29 And also the Strength of Israel (AF)will not lie nor relent. For He is not a man, that He should relent.”
30 Then he said, “I have sinned; yet (AG)honor me now, please, before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag king of the Amalekites here to me.” So Agag came to him cautiously.
And Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33 But Samuel said, (AH)“As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel went to (AI)Ramah, and Saul went up to his house at (AJ)Gibeah of Saul. 35 And (AK)Samuel went no more to see Saul until the day of his death. Nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul, and the Lord regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
