Israele chiede un re
8 (A)Quando *Samuele divenne vecchio, nominò i suoi figli *giudici d'*Israele. 2 Suo figlio primogenito si chiamava Ioel e il secondo Abia; essi esercitavano la funzione di giudici a Beer-Sceba. 3 I suoi figli però non seguivano le sue orme, ma si lasciavano sviare dall'avidità, accettavano regali e pervertivano il giudizio. 4 Allora tutti gli *anziani d'Israele si radunarono, e andarono da Samuele a Rama 5 per dirgli: «Ecco tu sei ormai vecchio e i tuoi figli non seguono le tue orme; stabilisci dunque su di noi un re che ci amministri la giustizia, come lo hanno tutte le nazioni». 6 A Samuele dispiacque questa frase: «Dacci un re che amministri la giustizia in mezzo a noi». Perciò Samuele pregò il Signore. 7 Allora il Signore disse a Samuele: «Da' ascolto alla voce del popolo in tutto quello che ti dirà, poiché essi non hanno respinto te, ma me, affinché io non regni su di loro. 8 Agiscono con te come hanno sempre agito dal giorno che li feci salire dall'Egitto fino a oggi: mi hanno abbandonato per servire altri dèi. 9 Ora dunque da' ascolto alla loro voce; abbi cura però di avvertirli solennemente e di fare loro ben conoscere quale sarà il modo di agire del re che regnerà su di loro».
10 Samuele riferí tutte le parole del Signore al popolo che gli domandava un re. 11 Disse: «Questo sarà il modo di agire del re che regnerà su di voi. Egli prenderà i vostri figli e li metterà sui carri e fra i suoi cavalieri e dovranno correre davanti al suo carro; 12 ne farà dei capitani di migliaia e dei capitani di cinquantine; li metterà ad arare le sue terre e a mietere i suoi campi, a fabbricare i suoi ordigni di guerra e gli attrezzi dei suoi carri. 13 Prenderà le vostre figlie per farsene delle profumiere, delle cuoche, delle fornaie. 14 Prenderà i vostri campi, le vostre vigne, i vostri migliori uliveti per darli ai suoi servitori. 15 Prenderà la decima delle vostre sementi e delle vostre vigne per darla ai suoi eunuchi e ai suoi servitori. 16 Prenderà i vostri servi, le vostre serve, il fiore della vostra gioventú e i vostri asini per adoperarli nei suoi lavori. 17 Prenderà la decima delle vostre greggi e voi sarete suoi schiavi. 18 Allora griderete a causa del re che vi sarete scelto, ma in quel giorno il Signore non vi risponderà».
19 Il popolo rifiutò di dare ascolto alle parole di Samuele e disse: «No! Ci sarà un re su di noi; 20 anche noi saremo come tutte le nazioni; il nostro re amministrerà la giustizia in mezzo a noi, marcerà alla nostra testa e condurrà le nostre guerre». 21 Samuele, udite tutte le parole del popolo, le riferí al Signore, 22 e il Signore disse a Samuele: «Da' ascolto alla loro voce e fa' regnare su di loro un re». Samuele disse agli uomini d'Israele: «Ognuno ritorni alla sua città».

Israel Asks for a King
8 When Samuel grew old, he appointed(A) his sons as Israel’s leaders.[a] 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah,(B) and they served at Beersheba.(C) 3 But his sons(D) did not follow his ways. They turned aside(E) after dishonest gain and accepted bribes(F) and perverted(G) justice.
4 So all the elders(H) of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.(I) 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king(J) to lead[b](K) us, such as all the other nations(L) have.”
6 But when they said, “Give us a king(M) to lead us,” this displeased(N) Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen(O) to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected,(P) but they have rejected me as their king.(Q) 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking(R) me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know(S) what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
10 Samuel told(T) all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take(U) your sons and make them serve(V) with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.(W) 12 Some he will assign to be commanders(X) of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your(Y) fields and vineyards(Z) and olive groves and give them to his attendants.(AA) 15 He will take a tenth(AB) of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer(AC) you in that day.(AD)”
19 But the people refused(AE) to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want(AF) a king(AG) over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations,(AH) with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated(AI) it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen(AJ) to them and give them a king.”
Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”

8 Now it came to pass when Samuel was (A)old that he (B)made his (C)sons judges over Israel. 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. 3 But his sons (D)did not walk in his ways; they turned aside (E)after dishonest gain, (F)took bribes, and perverted justice.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, 5 and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now (G)make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
6 But the thing (H)displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel (I)prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for (J)they have not rejected you, but (K)they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. 9 Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and (L)show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”
10 So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who asked him for a king. 11 And he said, (M)“This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your (N)sons and appoint them for his own (O)chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots. 12 He will (P)appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. 14 And (Q)he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants. 16 And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest [a]young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants. 18 And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord (R)will not hear you in that day.”
19 Nevertheless the people (S)refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us, 20 that we also may be (T)like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the Lord. 22 So the Lord said to Samuel, (U)“Heed their voice, and make them a king.”
And Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Every man go to his city.”
