La Nuova Diodati
7 Allora gli uomini di Kiriath-Jearim vennero, portarono su l'arca dell'Eterno e la collocarono in casa di Abinadab sulla collina, e consacrarono suo figlio Eleazar perché custodisse l'arca dell'Eterno.
2 Da quando l'arca era stata posta a Kiriath-Jearim, era trascorso molto tempo; erano passati vent'anni e tutta la casa d'Israele si lamentava con l'Eterno.
3 Allora Samuele parlò a tutta la casa d'Israele, dicendo: «Se tornate all'Eterno con tutto il vostro cuore, togliete da mezzo a voi gli dèi stranieri e le Ashtaroth e tenete il vostro cuore fermo nell'Eterno e servite a lui solo, allora egli vi libererà dalle mani dei Filistei».
4 Così i figli d'Israele tolsero via i Baal e le Ashtaroth e servirono solamente l'Eterno.
5 Poi Samuele disse: «Radunate tutto Israele a Mitspah" e io pregherò l'Eterno per voi».
6 Così essi si radunarono a Mitspah, attinsero acqua e la versarono davanti all'Eterno; quindi in quel giorno digiunarono e là dissero: «Abbiamo peccato contro l'Eterno». Samuele giudicò i figli d'Israele a Mitspah.
7 Quando i Filistei seppero che i figli d'Israele si erano radunati a Mitspah, i principi dei Filistei salirono contro Israele. Quando i figli d'Israele udirono ciò, ebbero paura dei Filistei.
8 Allora i figli d'Israele dissero a Samuele: «Non cessare di gridare per noi all'Eterno, il nostro DIO, perché ci salvi dalle mani dei Filistei».
9 Così Samuele prese un agnello di latte e l'offerse intero in olocausto all'Eterno; Samuele gridò all'Eterno per Israele, e l'Eterno lo esaudì.
10 Mentre Samuele offriva l'olocausto, i Filistei si avvicinarono per assalire Israele; ma l'Eterno in quel giorno tuonò con grande fragore contro i Filistei e li mise in confusione, ed essi furono sconfitti davanti a Israele.
11 Gli uomini d'Israele uscirono da Mitspah, inseguirono i Filistei e li batterono fin sotto Beth-Kar.
12 Allora Samuele prese una pietra la eresse tra Mitspah e Scen e la chiamó Eben-Ezer dicendo: «Fin qui l'Eterno ci ha soccorso».
13 Così i Filistei furono umiliati e non tornarono piú ad invadere il territorio d'Israele; e la mano dell'Eterno fu contro i Filistei per tutto il tempo di Samuele.
14 Anche le città che i Filistei avevano preso a Israele ritornarono a Israele, da Ekron fino a Gath. Israele liberò il suo territorio dalle mani dei Filistei. E vi fu pace fra Israele e gli Amorei.
15 Samuele fu giudice su Israele per tutto il tempo della sua vita.
16 Ogni anno egli faceva il giro di Bethel, di Ghilgal e di Mitspah ed esercitava l'ufficio di giudice d'Israele in tutti questi luoghi.
17 Poi ritornava a Ramah, perché là era la sua casa. Là giudicava Israele e là edificò un altare all'Eterno.

Sconfitta dei Filistei a Eben-Ezer
7 (A)Quelli di Chiriat-Iearim vennero a prendere l'*arca del Signore; la portarono in casa di Abinadab, sulla collina, e consacrarono suo figlio Eleazar, perché custodisse l'arca del Signore.
2 Dal giorno che l'arca era stata collocata a Chiriat-Iearim era passato molto tempo; vent'anni erano trascorsi e tutta la casa d'*Israele alzò lamenti verso il Signore. 3 Allora *Samuele parlò a tutta la casa d'Israele, e disse: «Se davvero tornate al Signore con tutto il vostro cuore, togliete di mezzo a voi gli dèi stranieri e gli idoli di *Astarte, volgete risolutamente il vostro cuore verso il Signore e servite lui, lui solo. Allora egli vi libererà dalle mani dei *Filistei». 4 Cosí i figli d'Israele tolsero via gli idoli di *Baal e di Astarte, e servirono il Signore soltanto.
5 Poi Samuele disse: «Radunate tutto Israele a Mispa, e io pregherò il Signore per voi». 6 Ed essi si radunarono a Mispa, attinsero dell'acqua, la sparsero davanti al Signore, digiunarono quel giorno e dissero: «Abbiamo peccato contro il Signore». E Samuele fu *giudice dei figli d'Israele a Mispa.
7 (B)I Filistei seppero che i figli d'Israele si erano radunati a Mispa, e i loro príncipi salirono contro Israele. I figli d'Israele lo seppero, ebbero paura dei Filistei 8 e dissero a Samuele: «Non cessare di pregare per noi il Signore, il nostro Dio, affinché ci liberi dalle mani dei Filistei. 9 Samuele prese un agnello da latte e l'offrí intero in olocausto al Signore; e gridò al Signore per Israele, e il Signore l'esaudí. 10 Mentre Samuele offriva l'olocausto, i Filistei si avvicinarono per assalire Israele; ma il Signore in quel giorno fece rimbombare dei tuoni con gran fragore contro i Filistei e li mise in rotta, tanto che essi furono sconfitti davanti a Israele. 11 Gli uomini d'Israele uscirono da Mispa, inseguirono i Filistei e li batterono fin sotto Bet-Car.

15 (C)Samuele fu giudice d'Israele per tutto il tempo della sua vita. 16 Egli andava ogni anno a fare il giro di *Betel, di *Ghilgal e di Mispa, ed esercitava la funzione di giudice d'Israele in tutti quei luoghi. 17 Poi tornava a Rama, dove abitava; là giudicava Israele e là costruí un altare al Signore.

De kist van het verbond in Kirjat-Jearim
7 De mannen van Kirjat-Jearim haalden de kist van de Heer op. Ze brachten hem in het huis van Abinadab op de heuvel. Ze zalfden zijn zoon Eleazar tot priester om de kist van de Heer te bewaken.
2 Jaren gingen voorbij sinds de kist in Kirjat-Jearim was neergezet. Hij stond daar al 20 jaar. Het volk Israël klaagde nog steeds bij de Heer over de Filistijnen. 3 Toen zei Samuel tegen hen: "Als jullie de Heer weer werkelijk gaan dienen, moeten jullie de andere goden en godinnen wegdoen. Houd met je hele hart van de Heer en dien Hem alleen. Dan zal Hij jullie redden uit de macht van de Filistijnen." 4 Toen deden de Israëlieten hun godenbeelden weg en dienden alleen de Heer.
5 Toen zei Samuel: "Laat heel Israël naar Mizpa komen. Dan zal ik voor jullie tot de Heer bidden." 6 In Mizpa gekomen schepten ze water uit de waterput en goten dat uit bij de Heer. Ook aten ze die dag niet. En ze zeiden: "We geven toe dat we ongehoorzaam zijn geweest aan de Heer." Daarna begon Samuel de Israëlieten bij Mizpa te leren wat er in de wet staat.
Overwinning op de Filistijnen
7 De Filistijnse stadskoningen hoorden dat de Israëlieten in Mizpa bij elkaar gekomen waren. Toen trokken ze met hun legers naar Mizpa. Toen de Israëlieten dat hoorden, werden ze erg bang. 8 Ze zeiden tegen Samuel: "Bid alstublieft voor ons tot onze Heer God. Vraag Hem om ons te redden van de Filistijnen!" 9 Samuel offerde een jong lammetje aan de Heer als brand-offer en bad tot de Heer voor Israël. En de Heer deed wat hij Hem vroeg. 10 Terwijl Samuel nog bezig was met het brand-offer, kwamen de Filistijnen al bij Mizpa aan. Toen liet de Heer het zó hevig onweren, dat de Filistijnen in paniek raakten. Daardoor werden ze verslagen door de Israëlieten. 11 Ze sloegen voor hen op de vlucht. De Israëlieten achtervolgden hen en versloegen hen tot voorbij Bet-Kar. 12 Toen zette Samuel een steen overeind tussen Mizpa en Sen. Hij noemde die steen: Eben-Haëzer (= 'Steen van de hulp'). "Want," zei hij, "tot hier heeft de Heer ons geholpen." 13 Zo werden de Filistijnen verslagen. Ze durfden het gebied van Israël niet meer binnen te vallen. Zolang Samuel leider van Israël was, was de Heer tegen de Filistijnen. 14 Het lukte Israël om de steden die de Filistijnen van hen hadden veroverd, weer terug te veroveren. Dat was het hele gebied van Ekron en Gat, met de dorpen die bij die steden hoorden. Ook tussen Israël en de Amorieten was er vrede.
15 Zijn leven lang leidde Samuel Israël. 16 Elk jaar reisde hij langs Bet-El, Gilgal en Mizpa. Dan gaf hij in die plaatsen leiding aan Israël. 17 Daarna ging hij altijd weer terug naar Rama. Want daar woonde hij en daar leidde hij Israël. Hij bouwde in Rama een altaar voor de Heer.

7 1 So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark(A) of the Lord. They brought it to Abinadab’s(B) house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the Lord. 2 The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim(C) a long time—twenty years in all.
Samuel Subdues the Philistines at Mizpah
Then all the people of Israel turned back to the Lord.(D) 3 So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning(E) to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid(F) yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths(G) and commit(H) yourselves to the Lord and serve him only,(I) and he will deliver(J) you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.
5 Then Samuel(K) said, “Assemble all Israel at Mizpah,(L) and I will intercede(M) with the Lord for you.” 6 When they had assembled at Mizpah,(N) they drew water and poured(O) it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.” Now Samuel was serving as leader[a](P) of Israel at Mizpah.
7 When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid(Q) because of the Philistines. 8 They said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying(R) out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.” 9 Then Samuel(S) took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on Israel’s behalf, and the Lord answered him.(T)
10 While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered(U) with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic(V) that they were routed before the Israelites. 11 The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.
12 Then Samuel took a stone(W) and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer,[b](X) saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
13 So the Philistines were subdued(Y) and they stopped invading Israel’s territory. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines. 14 The towns from Ekron(Z) to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to Israel, and Israel delivered the neighboring territory from the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.(AA)
15 Samuel(AB) continued as Israel’s leader(AC) all(AD) the days of his life. 16 From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel(AE) to Gilgal(AF) to Mizpah, judging(AG) Israel in all those places. 17 But he always went back to Ramah,(AH) where his home was, and there he also held court(AI) for Israel. And he built an altar(AJ) there to the Lord.
