Fastidi causati dall'arca
5 I Filistei, catturata l'arca di Dio, la portarono da Eben-Ezer ad Asdod. 2 I Filistei poi presero l'arca di Dio e la introdussero nel tempio di Dagon. 3 Il giorno dopo i cittadini di Asdod si alzarono ed ecco Dagon giaceva con la faccia a terra davanti all'arca del Signore; essi presero Dagon e lo rimisero al suo posto. 4 Si alzarono il giorno dopo di buon mattino ed ecco Dagon con la faccia a terra davanti all'arca del Signore, mentre il capo di Dagon e le palme delle mani giacevano staccate sulla soglia; solo il tronco era rimasto a Dagon. 5 A ricordo di ciò i sacerdoti di Dagon e quanti entrano nel tempio di Dagon in Asdod non calpestano la soglia fino ad oggi. 6 Allora incominciò a pesare la mano del Signore sugli abitanti di Asdod, li devastò e li colpì con bubboni, Asdod e il suo territorio. 7 I cittadini di Asdod, vedendo che le cose si mettevano in tal modo, dissero: «Non rimanga con noi l'arca del Dio d'Israele, perché la sua mano è troppo dura contro Dagon nostro dio!». 8 Allora, fatti radunare presso di loro tutti i principi dei Filistei, dissero: «Che cosa si deve fare dell'arca del Dio d'Israele?». Dissero: «Si porti a Gat l'arca del Dio d'Israele». E portarono a Gat l'arca del Dio d'Israele. 9 Ma ecco, dopo che l'ebbero trasportata, la mano del Signore si fece sentire sulla città con terrore molto grande, colpendo gli abitanti della città dal più piccolo al più grande e provocando loro bubboni. 10 Allora mandarono l'arca di Dio ad Ekron; ma all'arrivo dell'arca di Dio ad Ekron, i cittadini protestarono: «Mi hanno portato qui l'arca del Dio d'Israele, per far morire me e il mio popolo!». 11 Fatti perciò radunare tutti i capi dei Filistei, dissero: «Mandate via l'arca del Dio d'Israele!». Infatti si era diffuso un terrore mortale in tutta la città, perché la mano di Dio era molto pesante. 12 Quelli che non morivano erano colpiti da bubboni e i lamenti della città salivano al cielo.

5 Allora i Filistei presero l'arca di DIO e la trasportarono da Eben-Ezer a Ashdod
2 poi i Filistei presero l'arca di DIO, la portarono nel tempio di Dagon e la posarono accanto a Dagon.
3 Il giorno dopo gli abitanti di Ashdod si alzarono presto, ed ecco Dagon era caduto con la faccia a terra davanti all'arca dell'Eterno. Così presero Dagon e lo rimisero al suo posto.
4 Il giorno dopo si alzarono presto, ed ecco Dagon era di nuovo caduto con la faccia a terra davanti all'arca dell'Eterno, mentre la testa di Dagon e ambedue le palme delle sue mani giacevano troncate sulla soglia; di Dagon rimaneva solo il tronco.
5 Perciò, fino al giorno d'oggi i sacerdoti di Dagon e tutti quelli che entrano nel tempio di Dagon non mettono piede sulla soglia di Dagon in Ashdod.
6 Poi la mano dell'Eterno si aggravo sugli abitanti di Ashdod e li devastò e li colpì con emorroidi, Ashdod e il suo territorio.
7 Quando gli abitanti di Ashdod videro che le cose andavano a quel modo, dissero: «L'arca del DIO d'Israele non deve rimanere presso di noi, perché la sua mano è stata dura verso di noi e verso Dagon, nostro dio».
8 Così fecero radunare presso di loro tutti i principi dei Filistei, e dissero: «Cosa dobbiamo fare dell'arca del DIO d'Israele?». I principi risposero: «Si trasporti l'arca del DIO d'Israele a Gath».
9 Così trasportarono l'arca del DIO d'Israele là. Ma dopo che l'ebbero trasportata, la mano dell'Eterno si volse contro quella città, causando grande costernazione; e l'Eterno colpì gli uomini della città tanto piccoli che grandi con un'epidemia di emorroidi.
10 Allora mandarono l'arca di DIO ad Ekron. Ma, come l'arca di DIO giunse ad Ekron, gli abitanti di Ekron protestarono. dicendo: «Hanno trasportato l'arca del DIO d'Israele da noi, per far morire noi e il nostro popolo!».
11 Così fecero radunare tutti i principi dei Filistei e dissero: «Mandate via l'arca del DIO d'Israele; ritorni essa al suo posto, perché non faccia morire noi e il nostro popolo!». Si era infatti diffusa una costernazione mortale in tutta la città perché la mano di DIO si aggravava grandemente su di essa.
12 Quelli che non morivano erano colpiti di emorroidi, e le grida della città salivano fino al cielo.

5 Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it (A)from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of (B)Dagon[a] and set it by Dagon. 3 And when the people of Ashdod arose early in the morning, there was Dagon, (C)fallen on its face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and (D)set it in its place again. 4 And when they arose early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. (E)The head of Dagon and both the palms of its hands were broken off on the threshold; only [b]Dagon’s torso was left of it. 5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon’s house (F)tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.
6 But the (G)hand of the Lord was heavy on the people of Ashdod, and He (H)ravaged them and struck them with (I)tumors,[c] both Ashdod and its (J)territory. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how it was, they said, “The ark of the (K)God of Israel must not remain with us, for His hand is harsh toward us and Dagon our god.” 8 Therefore they sent and gathered to themselves all the (L)lords of the Philistines, and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?”
And they answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried away to (M)Gath.” So they carried the ark of the God of Israel away. 9 So it was, after they had carried it away, that (N)the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction; and He struck the men of the city, both small and great, [d]and tumors broke out on them.
10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. So it was, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, “They have brought the ark of the God of Israel to us, to kill us and our people!” 11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go back to its own place, so that it does not kill us and our people.” For there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there. 12 And the men who did not die were stricken with the tumors, and the (O)cry of the city went up to heaven.

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron
5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)
6 The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”
They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
